nuer
Nope. No doubt that the map is RDR, GTA 4 and SA combined. You can easily judge by all the screenshots and trailers released.

dzjx
they said it will be bigger than SA RDR and 4 put together but in reality i doubt it will even be as big as SA. It does look small, but for some reason if you say that on this forum the mods come and remove your comment.

Jack94
Yes. From what I've seen the map looks smaller than what I hoped. Lets just hope it turns out to be giant!
mobe
I have it on good authority that all of the footage and screen grabs we've seen account for about 25% of the map and that excludes Los Santos and the undersea areas. In other words the map is big.

PHOENIXZERO
It's good to have expectations in check. The only concern I have is mountains taking up too much area but I'm sure there's a lot of the world we haven't seen yet.

Empty desert? There are buildings all over the place in the desert. You have Sandy Shores and the trailer park at the Alamo Sea but you also have more buildings around likely all of the Alamo Sea. But that is not really all there is either. You still have more buildings on Route 68 and there is likely another big town to the east of Salvation Mountain. There is hardly any emptiness in the desert of this game going by everything we have seen of it. West, or actually north west of Los Santos there is yet another town/village based on Malibu. There may even be another town further up north on the west coast (west of Mount Zancudo). So yea, the map is really not that empty as you think. And the map so far is absolutely bigger than GTA SA. You should never try to predict the size of a map based on eyeballing it and nothing else and I am certain that is what people who claim the map has to be smaller is, do. carnage.
Going by the fan made maps, mostly Fido's, it does SEEM to look small. However, you can't really go by the map. You have to play the game to actually judge how big or small the world really is. With that said, i'm sure the world will be littered with awesomeness. I mean come on, it's a GTA game for crying out loud, they never disappoint.

TaazR
Unless they're hiding something big, then yes it is smaller than expected. All that "GTA V is 5x bigger than RDR" or "GTA V is the size of RDR + GTA IV + SA combined" is just marketing bullsh*t to get people excited. I'm surprised people believe R* after the amount of lies they tell.

MikeyB
I had huge expectations of the map but as we neared the release date it seemed to me the map is much smaller than what everyone expected.do you feel the same? Well, it sounds large enough as it's all the other games combined, but looking at the guesswork map based on the available info it doesn't look so big to me. Obviously R* are going to include all the underwater areas including parts out to see as part of the map so the explorable area is probably lager than the visible map. I'm sure it will be ok. I wonder how big it is compared to Test Drive Unlimited. Hawaii seemed pretty big and you could drive for ages on that. If it feels anywhere like that size I will be happy. Andreas
How comes that the map feels small to you? It's true that we have seen quite a bit of the map, but most of the screenshots we have seen seem to cover the fairly same area, so it's hard to say what we have not seen yet. There is certainly enough we have yet to discover, and we don't know how large the square footage of the map exactly is. All that "GTA V is 5x bigger than RDR" or "GTA V is the size of RDR + GTA IV + SA combined" is just marketing bullsh*t to get people excited. Not necessarily. When you hear gross estimations like "the map is bigger than IV, SA and RDR" combined, or "map is five times bigger than RDR", then it's up to you how you interpret it. Have they talked about square footage? Have they considered interiors, room to spare, underwater area, et cetera? Does the map they have used as example (RDR's map; or IV/SA/RDR) have some sort of wasted area? And if yes, have you included the wasted area in your estimation or not? There are so many factors you have to consider that can have a major impact on the result. For example, if you go by Game Informer's statement and you would include the inaccessible area of RDR in your estimation, and you would assume that they talk about square footage (2D space), then it's easily possible that the map is over 30 square miles big. But if you would go by 3D space, and if you consider the fact that the underwater environment is massive, then the result is way off. It's the best to expect the worst case, then you won't get disappointed. Choco Taco
It will feel smaller than what most people are expecting. San Andreas and RDR aren't as big as most people think and remember. SA felt bigger than it was due to the low draw distance and in RDR you're limited to traveling by horse through winding trails and a lot of the areas you could see were inaccessible. Also, in RDR you don't have the ability to get really high in the air and get a good look at the map. Those illusions aren't available in GTA V. You'll be able to stand on the Vinewood hill and pretty much see across the whole map. You'll be able to see Los Santos, the Alamo Sea, and multiple towns from the same spot.
