Time to upgrade my 6 year old HDTV for GTA V?

Right, I'm back, ok, first off, disregard most of the above, the whole "Don't get 1080p because consoles are only 720p", Bullsh*t, buying anything other than a 1080p screen now is just idiotic, most TV's upscale images pretty damn well, so current gen consoles still look great, plus, of course, being full 1080p, you can watch Blu-ray in full quality, hook up a computer and get 1080p gaming now or at the minimum have a set future proof for next gen consoles where 1080p is standard.

Second, "buy a decent HDMI cable", that's also bullsh*t, you only need a HDMI cable rated for HDMI 1.4, which, today, is the majority of cables, there's no difference between those $5 HDMI Cables or those stupid expensive $100+ HDMI Cables from MONSTER.

Third, LCD, LED, Plasma, etc, have all come a long way, and really, all fight close enough these days, Plasmas don't have anywhere near the ghosting issues or burn in (Image Retention) problems now and haven't done for the past few years, really, just go with what looks best to you, a bad Plasma will look like crap as will a bad LCD/LED Lit, etc, if you want the uttermost best, go for OLED, ...but that's very expensive at the moment. tounge.gif

Fourth, gaming wise, the important thing is RESPONSE TIME, check the frame delay of the TV in question, anything over 32ms and you WILL feel it in the controls, check out proper websites and reviews where they take frame delay and response time calculations into question, THIS is the most important thing gaming wise, you want that number to be as low as possible, so as a gamer, this is what you should be looking at anything else like contrast ratio or black levels, they should come after finding a range of models with a low frame delay.

Fifth, TV's come with a lot of crap that actually, really, do more damage than good, people in this thread I've seen one guy say get a TV with a "high Hz", no, noooooo, trust me, these screens are NOT that number, they are using artificial smoothers, they delay the image even more to build up a bank where it can then faux output at 200Hz or 600Hz or whatever stupid number they have now, in terms of gaming, this creates a massive delay from image input to display, especially on the higher number "Smooth" modes, it would get to the point where you'd press a button on your controller and there could be a second or more delay to what happens on the screen! These additional filters are bad for gaming, Dynamic Contrast Ratio, Digital Noise Reduction, Dynamic Colour Balance, any "Smooth" modes, etc, so on your TV, when you do get, be sure to turn all this crap OFF for you gaming input, that way the TV will do it's best to output to display the image as is with as little delay as possible.

Fifth point One, in addition to the above, when using HDMI or any other Digital input, many TV's offer a different display mode for the input, in screen type, you may think it's well enough to just leave it at 16:9, but really, if you have the option, switch this to 1:1 mapping or "Just Scan" as it would be called on some TV's (LG, Samsung, etc).

Sixth, most people here are idiots, I would not trust anything they say, especially when it comes to buying products, this is a TV man, not something small like a one off game purchase or whatever, instead, go to actual websites who do reviews on TV hardware and model to look up specific information and reviews/details such as the ones I've outlined above, I use AVForums (http://www.avforums.com/reviews/index.php) and even some of the guys over at NeoGAF (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=516410) can provide good feedback and detail on any latest TV purchases, there's a lot of buzz around the latest Sony HDTV line, the W900 and W800 series, which many are saying is the best for gaming at the moment.

Hope this helps you out. smile.gif

This guy knows what he's talking about. I'll admit that I'm not anywhere near an expert when it comes to television specs, but I did do a lot of research before I chose the one that I did. I chose the television I did for several reasons, and didn't just go to the store and pick one out. Look into the specs and just google any questions you might have. That's exactly what I did, and I am very satisfied with my choice.

I bought an Insignia (which is Best Buy's house brand, manufactured by LG). This is my 3rd Insignia. I chose to stay with Insignia because they have been very reliable, inexpensive, and have excellent picture quality.

I narrowed down the specific model by comparing specs. I wanted either a 42" or a 46". I wanted something with a decent response time. The 46" I was looking at had 8ms delay. The 42" I was looking at had a delay of 6.5ms. There were others with even better response rates, but the difference would be almost imperceptible and I couldn't justify spending another $100. From what I read online, as long as it's under 10ms delay, you'll be fine. Ghosting has pretty much disappeared except in the very low-end LCDs.

The 46" was LED, the 42" only LCD. This really didn't sway my decision at all.

Both were 120hz, but honestly I have it turned off. So far I've noticed that the only thing it does is make games lag and TV shows and movies look like soap operas. It seems to get rid of the editing that gives scenes their atmosphere.

I ended up going for the 42" because it was $90 less. I am very glad I did, because the screen size is absolutely perfect for my room. If I had gone for the 46", it may have been a little too big. I paid less than $500 for a TV that looks better than name brands that cost $200 more.

As for Plasma, I only have a little experience with older models that my dad used to have, but never played games on any of them. At the time, they weren't very good. When they worked, they looked great. But each one started color-bleeding after only a couple years, and you could tell my dad watched a lot of TNT shows since the logo was burned into the lower corner. If they have fixed these problems, then I guess it could be a decent choice.

I have a 6 year old Philips HDTV that has definitely stood the test of time. It can display in 720p and 1080i nicely but not 1080p. I have noticed though that the quality of the picture is not as good as some of the more modern HDTV's. I want the absolute best experience with GTA V so would it be worth it to upgrade? What brand/model do you recommend?

Yes, the pictures are much clearer on a HDTV. Text is clearer to read.

I completely endorse everything Ash says here. Out of this entire thread, this is the only post worth taking any notice of. He's even given you exactly the same HDMI cable advice that I gave in my post earlier.

Well I have just bought myself a new Sony 55" 3D cost me £2000.00.

It's the Sony KDL55w905, and is currently the best large LED screen you can buy for gaming, with a response time of 8ms!

Can't wait
