So I have been looking to build a gaming pc that I can record and play high quality games with. I'm looking for a $700-800 computer and have been picking some parts and asking some people and this is what I've come up with

The system looks fine to me, but it seems that the site shows all those parts from various of shops. Do you really want to purchase everything from three seperate shops? Or would you prefer to get everything from one shop? What resolution do you want to play your games with?

A friend of mine made that exact build two days ago, switch out the PSUand case anyway.

 

Build is pretty good I think, I'd stretch the budget for an Intel i5 but with mobo costs that might end up 200 bucks more expensive than what you have now, which probably isn't worth it if you're on a tight budget. I'll have to snoop out the psu when I get home as well. Or perhaps someone will do it for you.

I would prefer to get everything from Newegg people have told me the best things about them. Resolution, idk that depends on the size of monitor am I correct? I'm a big PC noob so I don't know how this stuff works.

This CPU cooler is not enough for this CPU I think, other than that the setup is fine. I'd also change the mobo to Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 - it has far more VRMs. To be honest, ASRock 970 Extreme4 is exactly the same as Extreme3, apart from better SLI/Crossfire support.

Video footage is gonna be the bane of your system, for an extra 10$ you can get a 1tb hard drive.

Recording games can as much as halve your framerate. It really takes a huge toll on performance unless you're using a HD PVR as opposed to capture software. However using a HD PVR requires a separate box that requires cables other than HDMI to be plugged into it ect ect and those cost like 200 bucks for a good one and even so quality will be less that something like fraps. In the end it would be a more worthy investment to increase you budget by a few hundred bucks and get an Intel CPU and Mobo combo.

Put in a second 500GB hard drive just for game footage and you should be ok for recording. I would go with this CPU cooler instead of the old one.

Probably like 40-50FPS on maxed out settings without recording, it's hard to guess.

If you want to have a good FPS while recording, you'll want a separate harddrive to record to.

It could be possible to record the game at max, that is if your willing to run the game at a lower resolution instead

of 1920x1080. Not a console gamer, but I've heard console run at 1280x720.

It's still better to spend $1000 for that extra head room on a good graphic card and extra HDD

Well the build I posted above is top of the line and would do all of that very very well. it came to $1080.

However the build Stinky12 made above is also a good build, and importantly it has a good CPU, recording gameplay is CPU intensive, that's the main thing bringing framerate down.

However if you go with Stinky's build go for the NZXT PSU I posted, and also the Antec300v2 case which is acclaimed as a great simple case.

 

Also, I posted a silly comment before, using an external PVR is still going to slow down your framerate a bit because it's still recording to the HDD. Your best bet would be to get Fraps or some other recording software, which can be had for like 40 bucks. And get a second Harddrive. Use a smaller main drive (250-500GB) for windows and applications, then a large perhaps 1TB Harddrive to record to and all that, that will improve your framerate significantly, as in almost no frame loss, total damage would be about 80 bucks for a second Harddrive, whereas a HDPVR would cost like $200 and like I already outlined, wouldn't really help.

 

Stinky12's build is probably the best value for money if you add another HDD and change the PSU and case like I said. It will do pretty much everything you want.

Alright so Stinky's build is $900 dollars all together and yours came out to about $1100 and his would be the better one to go with? I'm confused as to how this works.

I'd also swap the PC case you have there, for the one I linked, the Antec 300 V2, prices are about the same.

 

And Windows 7 Home Premium is a fine choice, should do everything you need, however, like I said, adding a 250GB HDD to be your main drive would be a good idea as it will increase performance quite a lot when recording, and then record all gameplay to the 1TB harddrive already in the build. Just do some research into how to do that first, it's not very hard, but having the knowledge first would be a good idea.

AV hard drives are mostly used in DVRs or other similar devices. No need for that.

Just used the single 1TB, split into 2 partitions, and see how it goes. If it works great, then there is no need to spend more.

Also the Intel Xeon I've selected in the build has Hyper Thread, but it's a hit or miss because there is no way to tell the one you'll get has it or not.

Hyper Thread (HT) is where a CPU core can make a virtual copy of itself. A dual core with HT (like the Core i3), under Windows, it will see it as a quad core (not a true quad core), just a dual core with HT=4 Threads. A quad core (Intel Core i7) with HT, Windows will see it as a 8 core cpu, again not a true 8 core, it's 4 cores + HT = 8 Threads. HT benefits especially when editing movies, images, or other professional work. Not so much in games, but it may help when you're editing the game footage that you just recorded.

Note that not all motherboards will support Xeons even though they're almost the same CPU as their consumer line up.

To be on the safe side, select Core i5 which has no HT or Core i7 has HT but it will cost more.

If the Xeon does work then you can save a lot.

iGPU is onboard graphics, no iGPU means you can't use the video outputs on the motherboard. But your getting a dedicated video card so it does not matter if the CPU has iGPU or not.
