A Serbian Film

Recommended Posts

ArmoredxApple

I just watched A Serbian Film on youtube, and wow.....I felt horrible watching it, but I couldn't stop. It was so disgusting, yet the story was pretty good. I don't know I feel about this movies, I think I liked/ Absolutely hated it. Have you guys seen it, and if you haven't I might recommend watching it, if you don't get grossed out and disturbed.

I think the movie gets that much better if you look at it as a representation of the average Serbian's psyche, rather than a violent, pseudo-snuff flick. It's not so much about crushing babies with sledgehammers as it is about audiovisually materializing of the thoughts of your average Radovan, Dragan or Stefan. It's quite interesting; understandably disturbing for some.

I have to say, I did enjoy it and thought it was a well done film, but I don't think anyone can say that it didn't have some disturbing moments. And I'm American, so I don't know much about Serbia, but I do know that people do crazy sh*t for money and sometimes have to power over what they are doing.

That's all bullsh*t from the director. He might have said it, but it doesn't make it true. The movie is just made for shock value. There's nothing deep or insightful about it. If you want to know how an average Serb thinks there are better movies for that. Like this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383846/

It's a comedy. But that's the thing about most Serbian movies. They make comedies to make fun of their own misery. That kind of approach to comedy is actually a pretty widespread phenomenon in the Balkan. This movie pretty much describes how young people in Serbia live today, as well as how they interact with each other daily. If that's what you're interested in.

So you are trying to claim it is something more than a pretentious shock flick?

First of all how is it pretentious? Especially if you're claiming it's a shock flick.

Second, yes I am claiming it is something deeper than just a disturbing movie, there is social commentary in the movie and it is deeper than "here's some gore scenes and newborn porn". Cannibal Holocaust is the exact same way, it has a deeper message but is just labeled as a gross out shock movie.

This film catches a lot of sh*t but I thought it was beautifully shot and served its message well. Call it what you want but to me, it's an excellent horror film. Also, you need to watch the uncut version to get the full experience.

The soundtrack is boom as f*ck for it. I like the filters in it as well. Could just be sh*tty cam quality though.

There are some places movies should never, ever go. A Serbian Film is one of those movies that went there. It took itself way too seriously but still I enjoyed the sh*t out of it. 'Course it was disturbing and disgusting, but I'm the kind of guy who finds actual violence far more disturbing than staged violence so it was not that disturbing to me.

The movie kinda reminded me of Human Centipede.

Having said that, I think the film is something of a satire and bears a comment on the Serbian government. There's really a kind of extremely dark sense of humour throughout. And I kinda agree with GTAvanja; It's basically an exploitation film thats ultimate purpose is just to shock the rat ass out of you. There's nothing more than that, really. Also the first half of the film before it gets graphic is actually kind of a well-made sort-of suspence movie.

I'd say Vanja's in a more adept position to judge whether the director's claims that the film mirrors the feelings of Serbs is accurate or not. At the end of the day, you can make any inference you like from the film's story and any subversive messages the plot tries to express, but, Vanja's 110% correct in that this is one of the last films that should be used to characterise the personalities and feelings of Serbs or people in the Balkans towards each other or their government. Kad porastem bicu Kengur is a good one; Lepa Sela, Lepo Gore isn't a bad one either.

Lepa Sela, Lepo Gore is one of the best movies ever made and definitely the best war movie ever.

One's a snuff film, the other's an actual piece of cinema; please don't compare the two.

Yes, I just tried watching the 3 guys 1 hammer video and I couldn't because I knew I was watching a real person actually get murdered where as in a film even as gross as A Serbian Film at the end of the day I know all the actors get to go home peacefully.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0334237/plotsu...y?ref_=tt_ov_pl

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1224373/plotsu...y?ref_=tt_ov_pl

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1806911/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

but i also bought this movie,

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478813/plotsu...y?ref_=tt_ov_pl

and found it interesting. it made me think of korean movies like old boy.

I skimmed through that movie. It's sh*tty and exists purely for shock value. I can see a lot of teenagers wanting to see it, but I've seen much worse sh*t over the years. I don't know why but I laughed when that one guy was shouting "Newborn Porn!".

Just watched this. Soundtrack is really good but the movie itself is f*cked up, what was that at the end anyway? Was it all a movie?

At the very end where the family committed suicide and are all lying in bed, then the weird guy is about to f**k the child? if so than yah they are filming it because it is a sort of messed up porno, like the rest of the movie was supposed to be about.

Wait so he's out of place for saying it's just gratuitous but you're not for saying it has deep social commentary about the average Serbian? Have you ever even met a Serb? His opinion doesn't make as many jumps as yours so you're the one who should be carrying the burden of proof right now.
