How can you imply that pop music from say, 2000- 2008 was by any standard more "real" than contemporary pop music? The formula to which the pop industry so strictly adheres was perfected LONG before 2008, it goes as follows:

1. a sexy young person to "sing" the song(see: antares)
2. purely functional harmony(see: the most basic form of accompaniment)
3. pentatonic minor/relative minor melody(see: the most basic form of rhythmic melody)
4. catchy refrain(see: commercial value)
5. LOADS AND LOADS AND LOADS AND LOADS AND LOADS AND LOADS AND LOADS OF MONEY

Word. Pop music is and has been sh*t for decades. The only difference is what's being marketed to you.

I think the critical post-2006 (or post 2008 as paperbagdude says, it's not an exact line) change is in the hardware.

 

Even in the '80s when samplers and synthesised instruments came in they were largely based around real physical instruments and tried to emulate them in a familiar 'analogue' way. Nowadays there is a heavy emphasis on software for music production and many plugins have a completely foreign sound.

 

Also, the hardware people are using to listen has changed: people no longer listen on hi-fis, PCs and car stereos, it's all iPods, laptops and phones which have very different (and limited) acoustic properties. There is no point in putting effort into bass or exciting catchy percussion because it simply doesn't get heard, so pop music is condensed into a narrow range of gimmicks and hooks.

 

Or at least that's my theory.

I don't know, pretty sure there has been no new forms of minority cultural expression for white people to criticise, devalue, reconstitute and then monetise since hip-hop.
