SA was supposed to have multiple protagonists

Fantastic job, Silent.

The thing you found out doesn't exactly mean that game was suppose to have more than one protagonist. As you know console version supports co-op. The code you found could be part of that and in early version R* could plan to use drop-in co-op for all the missions like in SR. Game was able to track both players separately, but probably weak PS2 wasn't able to support fluent game (it was barely fluent for single player), so the idea was dropped and the leftovers were used in totally useless co-op do-nothing-and-occasionally-kiss-the-other-player-kind-of-game or co-op rampages, which supports two players, each with his own health and inventory but only on one screen.

Any documentation? Alright then, I'll document gang weapons.

Note: This is NTSC v1.

0081B280 - Starting address.

Gangs have 3 weapon slots; add 4 bytes to get the first ID. Here's what I have:

2081B284- Ballas weapon slot #1

2081B288- Ballas weapon slot #2

2081B28C- Ballas weapon slot #3

2081B294- Grove weapon slot #1

2081B298-Grove weapon slot #2

2081B29C-Grove weapon slot #3

2081B2A4 -Vagos weapon slot #1

2081B2A8- Vagos weapon slot #2

2081B2AC -Vagos weapon slot #3

2081B2B4-Rifa weapon slot #1

2081B2B8- Rifa weapon slot #2

2081B2BC-Rifa weapon slot #3

2081B2C4- Da Nang weapon slot #1

2081B2C8- Da Nang weapon slot #2

2081B2CC- Da Nang weapon slot #3

2081B2D4- Mafia weapon slot #1

2081B2D8-Mafia weapon slot #2

2081B2DC- Mafia weapon slot #3

2081B2E4- Triads weapon slot #1

2081B2E8- Triads weapon slot #2

2081B2EC- Triads weapon slot #3

2081B2F4- Aztecas weapon slot #1

2081B2F8-Aztecas weapon slot #2

2081B2FC-Aztecas weapon slot #3

2081B304-Unused Gang 9 weapon slot #1

2081B308-Unused Gang 9 weapon slot #2

2081B30C-Unused Gang 9 weapon slot #3

2081B314-Unused Gang 10 weapon slot #1

2081B318-Unused Gang 10 weapon slot #2

2081B31C-Unused Gang 10 weapon slot #3

Since we're on the subject, does anyone know what this starting data 007BF970 represents?

To play multiple characters sounds splendid; I doubt anyone would disagree. So even though nobody likes to be wrong, I'd love to be wrong about multiple protagonists not being in the game index. When you found this on PC, what file did you observe?

You do have a point. I just like to think it's multiple protagonists code seeing how easy it can be used to achieve such. Combined with that interview it gives a pretty legimate proof.

The executable, as always. I was aware about that active player flag since ages but I always thought it's used in PS2 co-op missions. Turns out, it isn't.

Rockstar did create the multiple protagonist, but because of limited engine and/or system from the past they can't. They already make the scripts which is SilentPL found about active player flag. Good find icon14.gif

Well, considering how many things R* took out of the game before release, this is unexpected, but not a surprise.

If R* would implemented all that stuff they originaly planned: multiple protags, the skateboard, the Hot Coffee, the "home_brains" code, and all those interiors, anims, models, sound and text that are present but not used in the final release, can you imagine how the game would be? F*cking awesome

Maybe 3 different protagonists are the explanation for 3 different cities. Previous GTAs had only one city

Damn Silent, you're amazing. Good find.

Sorry for such a dumb question, how can you "look" in the gta_sa.exe file?

The story would have made more sense, assuming each "chapter"/locationfeatured its own protagonist.

After all, one of the main criticisms I hear about SA is the disjointed story. This would have gone some way to remedy that.

QUOTE (King Andreas @ Monday, Aug 12 2013, 03:16) Nothing (and I mean nothing) in the games code index supports this, thus suggesting this was an idea that was never even halfway put into place.

I know it's been a while since you posted this, but you are horribly wrong. Game code DOES hint that, you could check my attempt to re-use it:

The idea was taken down soon I guess, but game WAS playable at that moment already, as evidenced by my footage.

This time R* did not lie at all. Amazing find OP icon14.gif

Hey, Can you give us a download link to it?

It's not released. It hasn't even transformed into a proper, usable modification.

San Andreas was released in 2004 for the PS2, whereas it was released in 2005 for the PC. The point: Partially implementing this on PC and not the PS2 is outlandish. Nonetheless, I do believe this idea was considered, though I don't believe it was partially implemented, ever.

Very, very late reply, but this was a kick in my nuts. Is obviously the code isn't absent and is present on PS2, is in someway the first build of San Andreas (yeah, the PS2 version) and again... is obvious the code is right there but most probably a leftover/unfinished like on PC, just like Silent said.

ROCKSTAR MANIC

I heard of the multiple protags for San Andreas. It would have been amazing if they ever implemented this feature to the Great piece of video game art.

Nah nah nah Gta 6

I wish SA had multiple protagonists, atleast 2 anyway, they tried too hard to fit all these different personalities into 1 character, that being CJ.

STR8 BUSTAH

CJ was honestly a pretty bad protagonist. And to also be fair, I'm not sure if I'm totally on board with SA having multiple characters.

Nah, I think it probally would be CJ, Sweet and Cesar.

The way Sweet was left out of most if the story because he gets arrested and sent to a prison that doesn't even exists on the map always felt like a cheap cop-out to me.

If it were somebody from Las Venturas then I can't imagine who it could be because when we are at that part of the story we don't meet anyone who could fit the bill of a protagonist character.

CJ for LS, Cesar for SF and Tommy for LV would have been great imho.

I feel like it would have been:

  • CJ for LS, clearly
  • A Chinese immigrant who now works for the Triad for Woozie (hence the Tae Kwon Do fighting style in San Fierro)
  • Probably some wealthy partystyle type guy in LV or an agent for the Govt working for Mike Toreno.

San Andre reminds me of those movies with Jet Li and DMX teaming up. It has that Triad Chinese culture and that Gangsta Ghetto culture.

Played a couple of such games, and find them totally boring.

Switching between characters does not allow for a feeling of accomplishment.

Also, kind of Daemon Possession, taking over the personality/body of other characters does not feel right in a gaming situation.

Sure, it makes for some "Chrome" but nothing to brag about. Using a hammer, then a saw makes the changing of characters during the game merely a tool. Gives the meaning of calling someone a "Tool" a reality.

Very nice, since 2013, and I didn't know that.

For me: CJ, Cesar, Sweet

At first, control CJ and Sweet.
When Sweet is arrested he will be replaced by Cesar.

A character in each city does not make sense for me, It seems to combine, but thinking about, I can't imagine a story going that way. For example CJ is prevented from leaving by LS Tenpenny, meanwhile you would be doing what? Controlling another character in SF until the CJ can leave and go to SF? Unlock new characters over the game? (wtf?)

Realize that you always drive the Cesar's car, what's the point? It's his car, and if I remember right there even missions where he comes with the car and instead he keep driving, he gives you the place to drive. But at the beginning of game makes sense to drive cars that are not yours, they indicate you to drive instead of shoot. CJ has low "respect" yet.

But, of course, the storyline and especially missions could be different. But also I don't believe it would be much different, and so the storyline is the first thing to think about when creating a game, they close some story and continue with it while the game system is being developed, if something didn't work they are unlikely to radically alter the history.

Just to confirm, this camera is 100% manually yours, right? If not, I would be 2X more surprised. Even camera codes? Damn.

With what you got, you can say what the amount of characters? 2 or 3?

If you still have this test script could share here, this isn't a matter of "need to be playable", this is just a curiosity being tested.

Yeah the camera/transistion is mine. And hard to judge how many characters were supposed to appear - most likely two, though.

Well yeah it will be good if u give a tutorial on how to unable this feature! As this actually looks something made in R* style unlike that multiple protags mod. I mean I don't hate that mod but it doesn't fit SA!

Technically you can play as three characters.

Theres skinny cj who's a busta, there's fat cj who need to driver every where cause big is beautiful and then there is ripped cj who will bust a busta up!

Like twins...

Sorry off topic, but i use to play around with voice acting and the body feature back when i was younger...how weird.

Nope. People like Tenpenny.

At least the Players do and not the in-game characters
