Has any of you guys bought the game twice on both old gen and next gen? The definitive edition is dirt cheap right now and I've been thinking about getting it again. Is it a worthy remaster or is it like capcom's "remasters"?

Have only played through it once with no DLC on old gen. Think I'll go all Asia next month and play this and Yakuza Kiwami.

It's gonna be cheaper to buy the definitive edition for 7 euros than to buy the DLCs.

Huh, well, talk about unexpected. I never really got the vibe of ''Man, this would make a good movie'' while playing Sleeping Dogs.

That's what I was thinking. It worked good enough as a game and in the end, it's just an undercover story. A 2 hour movie wouldn't be as fleshed out as the game. I doubt it will be anything special so I'm not as excited as I was for the Assassins Creed movie (which turned out to be crappy).

It's a pity because they could be good. I made a big rant post in Movies and TV about it. I find with films based on games, they skim on the writers and then splurge on talent to try put bums on seats. They really should focus getting great writers so the story is actually good. If the film is technically great, with a good story the film can succeed, even without A-list Hollywood actors. But these films are usually made from a business perspective by marketing suits and not so much an artistic perspective.

I'm willing to give Sleeping Dog- the movie, a shot assuming it actually gets made.

I love Sleeping Dogs so much, and if it's successful then maybe there's hope for a sequel to the game!

The real question is will Emma Stone be in it?

They're making a movie. Donnie Yen is set to play Wei Shen for some reason: https://www.instagram.com/p/BewViyUn9Qb/

Personally, I think he's too old. And the role should have gone to the original voice actor.

T'was confirmed awhile ago. I actually dreamt of Donnie taking up the role before the announcement of the film took place. Despite his age, he could easily pass as a late 30's or even early 30's guy even though Wei is 28 years old.

Physically speaking, Donnie should be capable of doing all the moves you can do in the game, including the parkour. They'll need a bit of CG or wires for that, "Action Hi-Jack" though.

Anyways this film can actually be great, the narrative is very linear and can be done well. A mix of The Departed with either Flashpoint or Special ID, even The Raid 2 (story + action) with JWick visuals and this film could compete with the best of them (action-wise speaking).

I'm not against Donnie Yen playing Wei Shen, I just find it a bit weird considering his age. His skill is undeniable though. Anyway, I think the success of this movie will rest entirely on the director. It's not an easy thing to make a decent movie that's based on a video game that's been inspired by Hong Kong action movies of the 80's. They have to find someone who can do this genre justice without straying from the source material too much. But it should be, first and foremost, a Hong Kong action movie, not a video game movie.

But they should definitely include two things from the game:

"A man who never eats pork bun is never a whole man."

"TAKES GUTS TO WEAR THAT!"

  • Gareth Evans can do action but I'm not sure if he can handle the depth of the crime underworld & the undercover-ness of the Sleepy Dawgz story. Raid 2 was basically an undercover cop film, but it didn't really feel like it at all.
  • The John Wick guys can do the criminal underworld thing well, plus the visuals would be great. The action wouldn't be Gareth level though. Not sure how they'd go with the undercover cop story layers though.

I suppose they can just throw in Martin Scorsese as the Director and then hire Gareth & The JWick guys for the action scenes. That would be my perfect mix.

And yeah, the Pork Bun man has to appear in the film! The film would be basically pointless without him.

Donnie Yen is too old, they should go with Daniel Wu or the OG Voice Actor, he did good in Altered Carbon

I completely agree about Donnie Yen being too old for the character of Wei, but I think this video says all I want to say.

I hadn't seen this video before today, but my god. Could someone get the production crew/casting director to watch this please?

I commented on the voice talent some time ago. I think it's on the previous page. They're all amazing. If the movie is successful perhaps we'll get another game. It's one of the most original open world games out there. It would be a shame not to get another one.

How come this old ass topic hasn't been locked?

Slepping Dogs is one of those crap games I can't believe the hype of. It would have been cooler if it was True Crime 3 like it was meant to be. Intsead it was flat story and washed down gameplay. To be honest it is a horrible f*cking game. You can play this once just for fun but you don't want to play it ever again as the story and characters are so f*cking annoying.

True Crime games had 2x better stories and gameplay and they received sh*t revirws. Sleeping Dogs is utter dogsh*t.

Why should this topic be locked if people are still talking about the game and the new upcoming movie?

The game itself wasn't that bad and definitely better than True Crime games. I've played all of them and while stories and characters in both games were nice, quality of the titles were rather low, which lowered the notes in the reviews. I like True Crime NYC to be honest and I've completed it couple of times having fun, but the physics and amount of various issues was so high it was barely playable.

You may not like Sleeping Dogs (I wasn't very optimistic about it at the beginning), but it's really solid and polished title worth playing and completing, definitely much better than both True Crimes.

Open world is not bad but that driving, that driving is horrible. Camera is also not working correctly. It is a fine game but that is it.

FYI, Sleeping Dogs started as Black Lotus, not True Crime. It was it's own game beforehand. When Activision took over they wanted to try brand the game with something familiar and a brand that's already recognizable and the game already shared similarities to True Crime in the sense that it has hand-hand combat and you play as a cop.

Sleeping Dogs has it's faults but I'm not sure why any self-respecting gamer would call it utter crap. There wasn't hype over this game either. In fact it was seen a cultish, underdog game that punched above it's weight given the circumstances. It was certainly a refreshing take on the open-world genre, setting in in Hong Kong, hand to hand combat was amazing, better than any GTA or rival GTA game, it had amazing finishers, unique features like being able to jump from car to car, interesting organized crime story, great environmental interactivity like smashing people's heads in to an aquarium then being able to pick up one of fish and beat the opponent to death with it. Or grabbing an opponent and smashing his head between a car and car door repeatedly. Being able to open the trunk of any car and find a tire-iron to beat people with.

It's a game based on Hong Kong action films and they often focus on great martial arts and hand to hand combat and Sleeping Dogs excelled at this. The driving was pretty bad but it wasn't it's main selling point. It's not like GTA where it's more of thing.

The story was decent enough and helped along by actors Lucy Liu and Tom Wilkinson. It had a nice progression system like the combat system that tied into the flavour of the game and it's collectible system. Also pre-GTA V you could own cars permanently and collect them from garages.

The soundtrack was great with well known and respected record labels having their own stations such as the Warp label and Ninja Tunes. It also had nice world/asian stye station that was practically a soundtrack station which was a great addition because it was like being able to just switch between normal music or no music and a soundtrack station.

As I said, hand to hand combat is the main selling point of this game and it's a game with one of the best hand-to-hand combat systems in the last 10 years more more. By default, it can't be utterly crap.

Started replaying this on my PS5. It's more fun than I remember but I do hate the driving and the camera.

The soundtrack is ehh mainly because the first time I played through it I hardly paid attention to it. But there are some hidden gems on it

For the longest time I didn't know that Jay-Z sampled this.

Yeah this bugs me about some open-world, driving games. Ubisoft/Watch Dogs was the worst for it. The camera is tied to the motion of turning in your car. So, turn the car slightly and the horizon in front of you changes and moves - so if you drive erratically and make quick manoeuvres it means the horizon is always jerking around to keep things 'in front of you.' They need to relax that. Let a car turn in the world before the whole horizon turns. Rockstar were always good a figuring that out and it was never a problem.

Thankfully, Ubisoft put an option in Watch Dogs Legion to change the steering sensitivity which fixes that issue of jerky horizon.

Rest of your post was a trashcan classic, but you've got a point here. NYC in particular was heavily disrespected. I get the game breaking XBOX glitch being a big deal. Other than that, it was an awesome game.

Speaking of the soundtrack, what was you guys' favorite station? The traditional Chinese music station is the easy winner for me. The other stations had a few good songs here and there but overall I agree, kinda meh.

Boosey & Hawkes Radio, Softly, Sagitarrius FM and Kerrang Radio.

I mainly just listened to Real FM. Majority of those tracks were pretty old when the game released.  Was the game supposed to take place in 2012?

I mostly listened to Ninja Tune Radio and Warp Radio as those two record labels I knew and respected before. I usually like the music they put out. I'm so glad the devs went and got two of the most supreme alternative record labels and got them and made them as radio stations, even keeping their names.

Also, they had a soundtrack station  (I learned it's the local classics and Chinese music station, Softly) which was brilliant. GTA needs to do this, have a more soundtrack-oriented station.

I only listen to Warp, Ninja Tune, Real FM, B&H and Softly.

Warp and Ninja Tune because, well, they're Warp and Ninja Tune. The only gripe I had with Warp was the lack of Aphex Twin in the playlist.

Real FM really gave you that early-2010s experimental, Hyperdub hip hop vibe that wasn't just a continuation of the crunk/trap trend that was going on at the time, and I liked that UFG went out of their way to handpick more unknown artists like Ninjasonik, Banda Black Rio and Ghostpoet.

Softly is probably the closest the game can get to a chillout station. It's full of stock music and tracks that were made for the game but they work really well with the LED-lit ambience and aesthetic of the game. The tracks by Celestial were the best imo. Same goes for B&H, any classical playlist with Debussy in it is always good.

Other than maybe Sagittarius, however, I personally don't think the rock stations fit all in the Hong Kong setting. Roadrunner and Kerrang have plenty of great tracks, but in the context of a Triad story set in East Asia I feel it doesn't hit the mark at all.

I seriously need to replay this game again, it was an amazing experience. Hand to Hand combat being the best aspect of it, it beats the sh*t out of any GTA game in that regard. (pun totally intended)

In fact, Sleeping Dogs does so many things different from GTA that it shouldn’t even be compared almost.

This track sums up Sleeping Dogs for me, very chill but a mix of styles (also repping Shawn Lee, the composer for Bully):
