Why does GTA not use real car company's?

How far could get they go to implement real cars? Some cars come nearly close their real life counterparts.

Would it be allowed to use a real car as long as you remove any badges, like this for example?

Badgeless real-life cars are only in Android budget racing games and some free pc ones

Snip

That’s because a cars’ exact shape and dimensions are considered protected just like the branding.

That’s why video game cars that look like real cars have dimensions slightly “off” in comparison to their real-life counterparts.

cell phone games and such that do this are doing it illegally; and the likelihood of them being caught and sued is way lower than a GTA game.

Yea, they'd have to pay every manufacturer. And I doubt they would want to be in such a violent game anyways.

Bad question...

You need to secure license and obtain periodic renewal. That will cost fortune

Looks what rockstar did to radio stations.

Also car makers keep in safety their property and they even gets angry when is used for crime in game (Maybe in movies too). GTA is game when pedestrian hit and run is majority of crime.Imagine that s*itstorm for example Mercedes or BMW.

Cars are blowing, bullet riddled mostly by cops...Too bad for reputation.

And last, Im perfectly fine with GTA lore .Fake companies, fake cars, guns.I dont have problem with that, for me licensed cars in GTA world are way too off.

I'm aware of that but then some cars come dangerously close to their real life counterparts, like the Sentinel in IV and the Dominator in V.

These copy right issues should apply only to other car makers, not movies or games or in general art.

If Rockstar puts in cars from real manufacturers now, it would just be weird. I much prefer their style of original cars... but they just rip off real models anyway so it's not like it matters.

Beyond the obvious reason of licensing it just wouldn't fit the series IMO when everything is a parody of real life. I couldn't imagine driving around in a BMW while listening to Pisswasser commercials on the radio. Besides the fictional cars are better as they're more creative and original compared to seeing the same, boring cars you see on the street everyday.

They could put phantasie badges on real life cars, the better cars (in terms of looks) in game are those who look 99% lifelike.

I photoshoped what I have in mind but I guess it would not be legal:

Yeah, but what's the point of that though? I mean seeing an exact to life Ford Focus with a Vapid badge defeats the purpose of real life car companies allowing R* to use the vehicles to begin with. Might as well stick to what we already have.

Like when I see a Tornado in GTA V I know it's roughly based on a 57 Bel Air or the Vigero is a 67-68 Camaro for example, but they also have the unique touches that don't make them exact copies.

I think it because of legal issues and if they do use real car names , they have to pay copyright for every single brands they use . The price of the game would be sky-high .

I'm simply not into phantasy cars, most of them suck compared to their real life counter parts. Most weapons are 99% lifelike as well and I appreciate that.

Plus: GTA V is inconsistent, some cars look 99% lifelike, others like they were made from scratch, this is an odd mixture.

All you idiots saying car companies don't want their cars in a game representing crime, but games series like NFS, legit have you do illegal races and escape the police, run over police, and basically cause havoc. so it's not crime idiots, they are making a parody game, so they will make parody cars, also they don't want to pay for the license. And there are many other games that do have car license and you use those cars for committing crimes.

Fair enough, but I don't see the point slapping a made up badge on a real car. It should be one or the other.

Right, but dangerously close doesn’t count.

Not everyone needs complete fictionalization of everything in the game to find it immersive.  Just because the series is based in satire doesn’t mean that every single thing has to be a joke, pun, or play on real life brands.. in fact, it’s more annoying to me than anything.

To scale, they can go pretty close. Like dangerously close as you would say.  Most developers would probably prefer to not be “dangerously” close because they don’t want to face the prospect of litigation. They can’t model the car’s exact dimensions or OEM parts, or branding or anything covered by trademarks and copyright, obviously.

So yeah; they can be pretty damn close; it just can’t be exact. Tweaking a few small dimensions is usually enough to get past copyrights.  Sometimes it takes more than others, and obviously the the vehicle designers are artists so they might get creative and let their vision take over.

You know the Declasse Vamos looks almost exactly like the 3rd gen Chevy Nova SS, only taillights and front bumper turn signals are altered plus some lights added to the grille

and no, dominator is not dangerously close to the mustang
