Why does GTA not use real car company's?

It's the same thing why they use Burger Shot which is in real life is Burger King.

Imagine if you were playing freespace 2 or something and started seeing toyota brand spaceships.

Yes, I am implying that GTA has about as much in common with the real world as sci-fi. Who in real life can get out of jail in 6 hours after murdering hundreds of pedestrians and blowing up many cars? Who in real life can fall off the empire state building and be fine in an afternoon?

Let's face it. GTA is completely ridiculous and I love it for that. I love the mayhem and the stunts and the fake cars.

1.) GTA is in a completely fictional universe - for the same reason that New York is Liberty City, a Lincoln is a Washington. It allows artistic creativity and a certain kind of immersion. Honestly, I like fictional cars better - oftentimes they look better, and it can be fun to identify them.

2.) There are fees associated with licensing cars.

3.) Real world car companies do not want to be associated with criminals who use their cars to murder people using their products, nor do they want their cars to explode or be mocked. Would Toyota be pleased if it was a Prius that was mocked by a commercial and used to hit and run? No, and that is why it is a Karin Dillentante instead. This is why racing games can use licensed cars, but GTA cannot.

4.) Even IF R* could get licenses, some companies have exclusive deals. For example, there would be NO porches in a licensed GTA, because EA owns exclusive use of them in their games.

FYI the same parent company owns Taco Bell and KFC (and Pizza Hut, and previously Long John Silver's).

1. They are making a parody of the real world with everything in GTA universe so having real life cars would make them stand out in a world of Sprunk and Burger Shot.

And despite that, they still chose to use real firearms instead of parodying them.

They use models of real firearms, but they haven't used their real names since I believe Vice City.

Like how it's a "Pistol" and not a Glock 17 or an "Assault Rifle" and not an AK-47. The same way it's a "Vapid" and not a Ford or an "Infernus" and not a Lamborghini Murciélago.

Was there any GTA game that has real carnames? If not, it is the tradiiton to have knock-off cars.

R*'s humor beats any other game that's trying to be funny. A scooter in GTA is unique because it's named: Faggio.

Another car Coquette (If I spelled correctly)

I just can't see CJ is racing in a Ferrari running over old grandma's and other people.

I can't see Niko is trying to break in a real BMW and gets away with it. That's not GTA, that's NFS in an open world game.

this thread really ought to be over and done with, but some responses seem like they don't really get it.

it is about money. it's always about $$$.

two major parts to that already pretty well answered: it's expensive to buy licensing fees and some car makers would not agree to it or make silly demands that would compromise the game.

we all ♥ R* but they are in the end a company trying to make a profit. you don't spend money where you don't need to.

so why Midnight Club?

this is apples and oranges. a different genre. people who like racing games want realism in a way that people who play GTA don't. that's why Forza is a measuring stick for almost all racing games - it's realism. Licensing cars for MC makes it appeal to hardcore racing gamers; you can bet R*'s market research told them they'd probably sell a significant number more copies of the game that would more that would make up for the money they spent on fees to do it. Would licensing cars for GTA be worth the cost? is that a deciding factor for a significant number of potential customers? of course i haven't seen the statistical studies but i'd guess no.

when you start up Madden 2015 you'll be pissed if you find out all of the football teams are imaginary. nobody cared that the control panels in mass effect aren't stamped "HP" or "intel inside." when you start up GTA V you're going to be happy as heck to see an infernus, and it won't matter to you that the screen doesn't momentarily say "lamborghini" when you sit in the driver seat. it's just not a selling point; not worth the $$ in this context.

I can see General Motors drawing up marketing schemes now...

Because:

1. They are making a parody of the real world with everything in GTA universe so having real life cars would make them stand out in a world of Sprunk and Burger Shot.

2. Licensing costs a lot of money and do you know how many cars are there in a gta?

3. Many car companies don't want their cars in games where they can be damaged (that's why a lot of racing games don't have a damage model) as they have this stupid idea that seeing a car wrecked in a game would be bad for the company's image. And especially using their car to run over people like in GTA. So that would prevent them from having all the cars they want.

THIS.

I think having real life products in a GTA game would totally ruin the unique world that Rockstar has created. Without the parody of products we recognize, GTA would lose most of it's charm. GTA isn't even that violent as compared to other games, and the satirical open world is what sets GTA apart from the rest.

Audi seems to find it neat one of their models are in GTA V.

https://twitter.com/Audi/status/131797463165190146

that makes me want to drive (but not pay for) an audi haha! not every car company is without a sense of irony. i bet volvo would get a kick out of it if there was a boxy wagon in there too smile.gif nice find.

after any long session of playing GTA, if i pass a hummer or a helicopter i have to consciously remind myself that this is the real world.

Because GTA games are about satire...and satire isn't really that effective when you're using the actually company and/or thing you're satirizing.

Because GTA is it's OWN WORLD, so every brand is named how they want it to be. It's a parody of the real world.

Licenses and it would be boring with real cars...

Also with no real cars they can just make their own if they would want to.

As people of said it's because Rockstar like making a "parody" out of everything, and its possibly down to extra expense and lack of agreement from manufacturers. I mean, I think the game would be less realistic if they had all General Motors for example, just becuase other brands didn't want their cars being involved.

You could always buy the PC game and replace the standard cars with modded ones. Some are converted from other racing games, some are made from scratch. I just hope they've put a better traffic stream system in place in the new game.

Expense argument is invalid - they could easily throw up some money for cars in GTA if they wanted to, as displayed in Midnight Club.

How much did midnight club cost to make compared to GTA V? Exactly.

You know the Declasse Vamos looks almost exactly like the 3rd gen Chevy Nova SS, only taillights and front bumper turn signals are altered plus some lights added to the grille

I've been noticing this a lot recently. People sign up and make new accounts to necrobump a thread but with a post that's not even worthy to bump the thread.

Guess that's what 6 years of not having a new GTA will do to the community. People are losing it.

How far could get they go to implement real cars? Some cars come nearly close their real life counterparts.

Would it be allowed to use a real car as long as you remove any badges, like this for example?
