There's nothing good that will come of this law being passed, although I highly doubt it'll ever come into effect those that support it cause my head to hurt.

Regardless Rizqan is a PBM and won't be around for much longer anyway.

I think I actually heard about this years ago. The intention is obviously to prevent more children who may be in their single digits from losing their innocence at the hands of temptation and curiosity, but illegal_luggage does have a point regarding the ineffectiveness of censoring "deep web" sites not indexed by well known search engines. After all, how else could China's internet censorship attempts fail time and time again? False positives as they're called are also a big problem whether it be website blockers used on networks within enterprises to large public ventures such as this.

Obviously, people need to take some responsibility for their own problems and of course take responsibility for their children. Nothing can safely replace common sense.

What's stopping parents from using common sense and blocking most of these sites anyway? That is possible and does work so why the sudden crackdown on internet porn? I believe we can refer to the previous blockage of pirating sites that can still easily be used, using proxies and such. Whether this law is passed or not, will it truly bother many of us? I mean besides the chronic masturbators. It won't pass, and if it did, it'll just make me realize that we're slowly slipping into a dystopian system that prohibits human instinct.

That's one of the reasons people think/know this law is stupid.

Yes, parents could look after their children instead of getting the government to do it. But they don't, and they cry foul (look at 15/18 rated games, the complain about the affect on children when it's their own duty to stop them playing them if they're worried about it).

Whether this law is passed or not, will it truly bother many of us? I mean besides the chronic masturbators.

The law goes over much more than porn, but even that isn't the only problem - how do you define what's porn and what isn't? How do you them go about blocking only porn? Keywords? No, that wouldn't work. Manual lists of sites? No, too many. Image recognition? No, they would be confused with non-porn sites.

Then there's the other things they want to block with this law, like violence, self-harm, anorexia, suicide... which doesn't make any sense. Especially since this means for-help websites (like for suicide) can't be viewed. Want help with suicidal thoughts? Tough, any help has been blocked.

it'll just make me realize that we're slowly slipping into a dystopian system that prohibits human instinct.

That is almost certainly the point of this, just using 'think of the children' as a way to get people to like their censorship. It doesn't matter that the law makes no sense in any way, it's 'for the children' so it's okay.

OT: but porn does damage lives. i know someone whos marriage was finished because the bloke was literally hooked on porn. spend loads of money on it, couldn't have sex with his wife as the only thing that turned him on was porn. it was bad. and it does effect one mentally if its a constant exposure. and even worse for kids. it was in the news a few years back how a group of guys, all 16ish raped a girl who was 14, because they didn't know it was wrong, as they saw it in porn. and they even said "it looked like fun in the video, so we did it". kids these days are more stupid then before so they dont know whats wrong. these kids will just grow to see woman as non-human, an object to use and nothing else.

internet ban on porn in the long run is good. i'm all for it.

and before people complain, this isn't censorship for the whole of the UK. its to protect the kids. people who want to see porn on the net can opt out by contacting their service provider. and they will have access again.

This is censorship. Unless you opt-out, this filter blocks you from viewing certain sites by default. And for all this talk of 'protecting our kids' - what a terrible shame that children are born into this world without a guiding, nurturing influence provided by a person they trust, who can be there for them to educate them in what's right and wrong and give them advice. If only they had these kind of special guardians - I'd call them "Pa-rents", for short.

EDIT: Strange how quotes don't seem to want to work.

You a troll or something? Oh well, here goes.

You're using two anecdotes to support your claims, which is wrong, but the anecdotes themselves don't show much. First one, the bloke's habit wouldn't change with internet censorship, they'd just buy porn mags or circumvent the block, since they're extremely addicted to porn. That's no fault of the internet, that's his fault.

Second one, that's just an excuse. If it really was because they were stupid, maybe sex ed would be better than demonising sex itself? You then go on to generalise this generation of kids based off of this one event. What you said literally makes no sense.

"kids these days are more stupid than before" Are they really? With the access to all the information humanity has to offer, the access to news reports on anything - including rape - with commentary on how bad it is, you'd think there has to be a tiny fault with the idea kids are getting more stupid? Again, sex ed would actually solve the problem instead of pretending it doesn't exist.

An internet ban on porn is bad in the long run, because they'll layer on more censors because they have the system to do so.

"its to protect the kids". This is a pathetic statement. If you think the internet is bad for your kids, block it your damn self.

What you're saying here is that some kids run out in front of cars, because they don't know it's bad. Therefore, ban every single car "to protect the kids". This makes no sense, it never will. Yes, they could opt out. Why the hell isn't it opt in, hm?

I don't think anyone disagrees with the idea that limiting access to pornography for children and young teenagers is a good thing. The objections come from the fact this policy absolves sh*t parents of their responsibilities to protect their child from unsuitable content and makes it the responsibility of commercial bodies to try and do what parents are evidently either too stupid or ignorant to do, at a financial and privacy expense for wider society (who do you think will pay for this? ). And of course the fact the entire f*cking thing is completely technically unworkable. There isn't a single way of doing it which isn't either easily bypassed or dramatically impacts on bandwidth and it risks pushing legal consumers towards the black and grey markets where exposure to actually harmful and dangerous content is more likely.

Its dependant on where and how kids are raised. and children these days are raise no way near as good as they were 50 years back. kids are stupid and have no common sense or the ability to distinguish right from wrong. yeah some parent raise their kids properly, but many don't. visit south London and you'll see the level of intelligence in these kids. thick as sh*t. they have never picked up a newspaper or watched news on tv.

internet isnt bad, its porn we're on about. and you think most parents will block it themselves? nope. either they dont know how to or they don't care enough. government blocking it and then adults having the initiative to unblock it is the better way IMO.

and yes kids do run infront of cars. they don't understand the concept of using a zebra crossing or pelican crossing.

Firstly, I crossed out what was incorrect in your post.

Secondly, you haven't said why we should block porn with good reason.

Thirdly, your statement of "and you think most parents will block it themselves? nope. either they dont know how to or they don't care enough." also applies to unblocking their internet. They think it's just porn, but their internet has been censored in other ways, which simply shouldn't be happening. That's why it should be an opt-in service, so you get a fairer choice instead of being put on a list of 'porn-watchers'.

Like I said, what would be wrong with educated instead of pretending the problem doesn't exist?

The idea of blocking this stuff, like sivispacem said, is unworkable.

So because some parents are completely unable/unwilling to raise their children properly and expect the government and schools to be their surrogate, everyone in the country has to be subjected to superfluous censorship?

News to me.

If this isn't censorship then I'm Margret-f*cking-Thatcher.

In all seriousness, it doesn't f*cking matter what other children around the country see, that is their parent's job not mine, not my brothers', nor my friends' nor anyone else I know's problem. You want your children to be unable to access pornography on the Internet? Block access to porn on your computer, it's not a hard thing to do. What might be harder however, is forcibly telling every person in the UK over the age of fifteen that they cannot access pornography anymore, for some reason (and this might sound a tad outlandish) it seems to me that installing that firewall would be a much simpler and easier course of action.

I do not need to have my rights to watch and view whatever I want on the Internet that I pay for taken away because little Jimmy up in Newcastle's been fapping to dominatrix's stomping over fat men's testicles. I'm asexual, and I do not watch porn as I find it rather funny, almost like a hilariously bad soap on TV, but to limit my fellow countrymen's ability to access it just because a bunch of mothers who don't know how to install a firewall want to protect their budding teenagers' innocence (which I think is terribly wrong as children and teens should be allowed to discover their sexuality however they choose too, and to get rid of that sexual tension in the same way any of you would) is f*cking pathetic and damn-near Orwellian in nature.

Not to go too off topic here, but why would you "feel sorry" for us? Because we're not interested in sex and the relationships and bonds we form with others are based solely off of their emotional merit rather than lust and longing for one another?

How can you properly understand something when you can't properly experience it?

What makes you think that I haven't "experienced" sex? Or been subject to things of a sexual nature in today's society. A very ignorant statement to make, but what's more impressive is that you seem to think that experience equals understanding and it most certainly does not.

How can we know what the atmosphere on Mars is like without ever having been there ourselves? Do you see how foolish this question you ask is yet, because I'm hoping that you'll start to pretty soon. Just because I haven't experienced something does not mean I cannot learn about it and by extension further my understanding of it.

You're completely missing the point and forgetting about factors and level of understanding. Will I ever fully understand what it was like to have been in Vietnam as an American soldier during the war? No, of course not. Can I try and understand by using my own experience and knowledge? sure.

And I'm sure you've had sex before, I didn't imply you were a virgin. You yourself said that you are asexual, and if you're serious about that then that means a whole lot. You're also getting offended for no reason. I only said I felt bad because asexual people will never be able to experience the true joy and beauty of sex. Just like how I feel bad for people that were born unable to use their legs. Or just how I feel bad for homosexuals (yet at the same time they have all the luck in this aspect) that they can never view a woman as I can. What do queers care about my opinion on that? they shouldn't give a damn. They probably feel the same way for all the goddamn straight people out there!

As for the atmosphere on Mars / sex comparison, what an absolutely ridiculous thing to say - but understandable coming from a supposed asexual person. You're not gonna learn about sex and love by reading books or studying your whole life.

Basically, you'd be like a person talking about LSD at a Drug Convention while you haven't even tried it. Sex, like psychedelic drugs, is a very subjective thing (which should be obvious). Hence why the atmosphere on Mars with sex comparison absolutely makes no sense. We're not talking about f*cking bowling here.

I feel genuinely insulted that you would feel "sorry" for me, treating my asexuality as if it were a disability is a rather harsh thing to do is it not?

If I were to use the same logic you've used there I could quite easily say that I pity you since you'll never be able to form relationships as deep as I can, sexuality is subjective but when you start to speak down to someone who's sexuality differs from yours, that is when you can expect retaliation. I do not feel sorry for you because you enjoy sex, and I rather enjoy the fact that I do not need or want to have it. We're both different people psychologically so judging me and more importantly pitying me for my sexual preferences (or lack thereof) is an extremely ignorant thing to do, and that's without mentioning that you said I couldn't understand the video you sent me because of them.
