Ash_735
Why does everyone keep saying compression when I've already listed exactly how this is achieved? It's not compression, it's abusing the ability to use two discs, so rather than models/maps/textures having to share half a disc with audio, they now both have double the size in effect to deal with, in mapping terms, this means a lot more can be done. Scripting stuff doesn't really take up much space, so things like extra games, side missions and stuff isn't a huge hit on disc size, it just takes a lot of time to do. It's essentially, from this point onwards, Rockstar being able to use 7.8GB JUST for Map/Models/Textures, which creates a lot more freedom and then having an additional 7.8GB for the audio and TV and frontend stuff, even more so on the PS3 version. So to put it clearly: XBOX 360/PS3: Will have that 7.8GB Install, they will be near identical Xbox 360: 7.8GB to use for Audio and Video and misc/frontend/etc PS3: Will be like GTA IV, where the additional space was used to bump the bitrate and quality of streaming content. So most likely, the PS3 version will be bigger in terms of disc size content by around an extra 2 to 3GB.
Gnocchi Flip Flops
GTA IV was 6.51 GB. That game didn't have anything compared to GTA V. GTA V has far better AI, 3 characters, tons of vehicles, a MASSIVE world, tons of customization, and I could go on and on for hours. I don't get how they could fit all this in just 15 GB! We've basically seen all of the map, excluding underwater world. There isn't much else to be shown on land. I thought the world would be like huge with 10 towns and a huge desert plus dense forests, or at least one.

Druffmaul
GTA V is more than twice the GB of GTA IV, and you still "don't get it"? OK.
ForDaNords
GTA IV was optimized like sh*t. If it was optimized as well as V is, it'd most likely be 2-3 GB. So V is close to 6x bigger than IV GB-wise. Edited: Seriously? Swear words get blocked even though this is a forum for an M rated game series? Okay...
ASNAEB
Textures take up the most size. Skyrim is a huge game, yet on the PC without the high-res textures download it only takes up 7GB. Why? Because even though the game is huge, the textuers are low-res.

kastrenzo
Open areas don't take as much memory as Urban areas in games and Console textures are low res, and generally don't take as much hard drive space as a PC game. ^ Skyrim runs like sh*t because it's not a new engine, it's an updated Gamebryo engine, which is one of the sh*ttiest and most unstable ever seen in the past 5 years on a AAA game, Fallout was on the same engine, buggy as hell. PHOENIXZERO
Dunno why it's so hard to understand... Don't feel like writing and it's already been explained anyway. EDIT: I probably should quote the right answer. So most likely, the PS3 version will be bigger in terms of disc size content by around an extra 2 to 3GB. Not to worry, get a ps3 The size (15 GB) will be the same for both consoles. Also, since 2011 xbox 360 dvd's have a maximum capacity of 9-10 GB instead of the original 6-7 GB. So I don't see a space problem for 360. Wrong. The Xbox could only read 6.8GB out of the 7.95GB available, but Microsoft claims they managed to make the last bits usable, that it's able to roughly store 8GB of Data, not 9-10GB, that's physically impossible on a DVD. Also wrong with the BluRay disc being the same size. Many games before (including GTA IV) proved that the BluRay Version had larger files, in GTA IV that meant higher quality of the audio/video files. I mean, why not use the space if you have it? Even if they want to fill a single layer BluRay Disc only then they'd still have 10GB of free storage, can easily be used for better quality of some files. MS reduced (or removed, can't remember) the amount of space their "security protection" software took up on discs and gave 1GB back developers. Just requires a bit of research to make sure it's a drive that's compatible and performs well. Edited July 19, 2013 by PHOENIXZERO

EvilFuture
GTA4's size including all land and water is probably about 2/3rds the size of GTA5....dont listen to what they said about GTA5 being the size of EVERYTHING combined, its called lying to you and selling you a dream. What are you talking about dude? It's already pretty evident that it's way bigger than that. Look at the mapping topic.

Villager
It's so simple and so secretive at the same time. Ask the Housers who funded the Kifflom secret society to develop a files compression solution specifically for GTA V. What kind of funding is that you ask? to promote the evil of Kifflom in GTA V. Run away, run, run, awooooooo.

LolBurn
I believe it is the audio as well. The hundreds of pages of character dialogue, the radio stations, gun sounds, car sounds, and other sounds. However, to those saying no cutscenes, there should be a cutscene for every mission as this is GTA. Although I'm not sure that can be considered a cutscene. The cut scenes are done in real time/in-game, there won't be pre-rendered cut scenes which is what people mean. The former takes up a small fraction of the space the latter does. The reason Max Payne was so big was because of the pre-rendered cut scenes there were used constantly throughout the game.
Plainview
Less cutscene videos would leave lots of room for filed content probably. I'm just talking out of my ass, but perhaps the max payne esque transistion from cutscene right into gameplay, masking the loading times helped the data required. TheKrigeron
15GB is a LOT, like a LOT, even Skyrim fit in one disc. If the map isn't huge, then the details will be oustanding or there will be tons of activities, hell it can fit the 3 of those!

ItsClipZz
Things adding the most data to the games are. Audio and Textures. Models and the map itself are tiny. just a list of polygons , Modding cars and such wont add much data at all. Textures because the map is bigger, and they probz have more audio in this too, thats what i reccon
