visionist
I'll most probably be getting a Plasma after all, and image retention scares the sh*t outta me. Will we be able to completely turn off the radar & HUD do you think? Could we in IV? (I can't remember...)

Mokrie Dela
Surely the HUD isn't a static image though, is it?! Yes, it is. It ruins plasma TVs. Tip: DONT buy a plasma TV for gaming. Just don't. Notacreativeguy
Just do your research on the tv. I have a Samsung 5o" plasma, and it has safety measures. I think most if not all plasmas have pixel shift (the screen is constantly shifting several pixels. Unnoticeable with the naked eye), plus they have white wash and other methods to avoid retention. I've had the tv 4 or 5 yrs with no problems. Once, I left for the weekend and some friends stayed at my house. When I got home, I saw the tv on and a game paused (plasma nightmare), it was left like that over a day. I just turned white wash on for a few minutes and tada, no screen burn. You'll be fine, leave the hud on.

_L1pE_
The permanent HUD elements are semi-transparent though, would that still f*ck up plasmas?
visionist
I'm planning to turn it off anyway for exploring. Missions I'll have it on. The TV I'm looking at is a Panasonic VT30: a high end display that still holds its own several years after release. I WANT a Plasma. I NEED a Plasma. I HATE LCD. CalgaryJay
Surely the HUD isn't a static image though, is it?! Yes, it is. It ruins plasma TVs. Tip: DONT buy a plasma TV for gaming. Just don't. Ya, its a double edged sword for me. I have an old 42", 720p Samsung plasma, and my roommate has a new 46", 1080p Samsung LCD. And I swear games pretty much universally look better on my plasma, despite it being lower resolution. Just something about the colours, they seem so much warmer and vibrant than an LCD, even when you fiddle with the visual settings. But if I play a game with something static like that (e.g. Madden, with the score bar always at the bottom of the screen), it burns a hole into it, and I can see the static image there for a long, long time, like weeks even. It's frustrating.

All screens, no matter what type, are susceptible to burn-in/image retention 3. Modern plasma TVs have better phosphors than old ones, so burn-in isn't a big concern now like it was 10 years ago 4. If you get a burned-in HUD, watch TV (avoid channels with news tickers) for a few minutes- problem solved.

Looks like I need to go pull some heists...

My only question with that would be that the graphics always look better on the 1080p, its just the colours that appear dull in comparison to the plasma, even when I jack up colour settings on the LCD. visionist
Old pictures stay on the screen, like a ghost, even when you watch something else. Takes a long time of watching different things to clear the screen. Sometimes, it never clears- this is called burn in.
Murad96
Ah. Now why would that happen? I think that has happened for me once in the last 7 years. I don't even know.
Omar777i
What is image retention? I don't know what that is. It's a TV with image and text burned into the screen.
visionist
Ah. Now why would that happen? I think that has happened for me once in the last 7 years. I don't even know. It's complicated: Plasma is a gas, the phosphors ignite and glow and that gives the pixels their colour. I think Anyway if they don't move around (static image) they burn in permanently. TakinThyBacon
Yep we were able to in IV, I'm hoping for the same thing, and with any luck the GPS will be good enough that we can just follow the voice commands.

TheDeaconBosco
Anyway if they don't move around (static image) they burn in permanently. The Minimap itself isn't static, it will probably stay monochromatic, but not static.
ForDaNords
The HUD constantly moves around and is somewhat transparent so you can see things behind it. Don't worry!
