un94
The gameplay trailer was very beautiful and showed how big and expansive the game will be. But I'm quite worried the game's countryside will not be more than the Alamo Sea and it's sorrounding area. In some screenshots we've seen some dense tree-areas, but not big forests like we've had in San Andreas... big in 2005 of course... technically places like Back o' Beyond were pretty small with copy/paste trees... but back in PS2-times it just felt awesome and I always got lost in those forest-areas like Angel Pine, Back o' Beyond or Truth's farm. GTA 5's countryside looks very beautiful and well-designed... but since we know that the map will end just north of the Alamo Sea (the area where Franklin was parachuting), I'm quite worried the overall map will be "just" desert-like. Yes, we've seen the vineyards and trees on mountains, but no dense, green forest-areas like we had them in San Andreas. Some trees on hills/mountains can't be called a forest in my opinion. Just afraid that most part of the map is covered by those huge mountains, without flat and "green", forest-like countryside like Back o' Beyond. This area from trailer #1 looks like a more green area, perhaps there is a forest behind the hikers. Do we know where that is? This mountain range is absolutely massive and seems to be the largest place on the map.... even a lot bigger than the mountain north of Alamo Sea in my opinion. I just can't imagine where to put this place according to the maps in the mapping thread. I'm not trolling or bitching about the game, its very very beautiful with tons of features and Game Informer told us there will be farmland, wetlands and forests, but I just haven't seen that much of it yet, and I'm just afraid that the overall map will be quite... "dry", without any large and dense forests.
Dope_0110
Well, yeah, I don't really expect large dense forests any more after seeing the gameplay and removal of trees in some areas. Though, there still seem to be a few places where there will be real forests. One of them is to the right of the town where Franklin parachutes. If you look carefully at screens of that town, you'll see the road left (when looked above - east-southeast in game) leads to a forest.
teamfranklin91
It will probably be more vast then we could ever imagine. In other words prepare to get lost

Official General
I don't think the natural land around Los Angeles actually has extensive forests on flat-lying land that you speak of. Most of natural environment around LA is mountainous, hilly, rocky, semi-arid and dry bush country. Any forest near LA is more likely to be forests within the mountains. The more bigger, denser forests are further up north of LA (Redwoods and Giant Sequoias), or national parks far away from LA.

LibertyPrime
we still don't know what's up north. There may be lush greenery. I hope so.
PHOENIXZERO
GTA:SA was a amalgamation of southern and northern California with a little Nevada thrown in. This time it's strictly based on Southern California. Here's a few pics of Southern California National Parks. http://www.northamericanparks.com/southern_california.asp Where is the GTA V equivalent of San Gorgonio Mountain? Tankshell
Direct quote from Rockstar during the GI reveal that everybody seems to forget: It's pretty incredible to start out nearly a mile up looking over the vast city, rivers, coastline, countryside, hills, mountains, canyons, deserts, wetlands, forests, and all of the little towns, farms, buildings, and settlements Why would they specifically have listed forests separately from mountains and canyons and wetlands... if there were not any forested areas in the game? Twiggy123
Wasn't something mentioned about a redwood forest in an article? We can at least expect that.

wwinterj
It seems more like woods than forests to me although I think there will be both. We haven't seen all the map yet so I hope forests are in there. Forests were great in Red Dead Redemption.
Trund
I more and more get the feeling that the countryside etc. will be smaller than R* had planned at first. Not sure why I think so, maybe because they keep using the same locations for the trailers? Wouldn't surprise me if some things we've seen in trailer 1 aren't in the game anymore. I think we'll get at least one dense forest near Zancudo or something, but Southern California, where this game is based, it's very foresty. It's dry and there are a few large pines scattered around the hilly region.

gwaha
@Trund I have to disagree. We only have to see Grapeseed again and the so-called Mt Chilliad. With Mt Chilliad it is possible that we have seen that mountain already but not that particular side. I doubt that the map is smaller than it used to be. I believe the hikers shot from trailer 1 was taken from the NW side of Mt Alamo/Mt Chiliad. You can see in the gameplay trailer when Franklin base jumps from the mountain, that there is a dense-ish forest area around here (West of that town - Paleto or whatever).
