EvilFuture
I have been seeing buzz online about the newest Windows 8. Basically what I'm asking is, what is your opinion on Windows 8? I am asking this to the people who actually have it and use it, not people who have just seen it online or something. I honestly love Windows 7, and Windows 8 doesn't look like the choice for me, and I've been wanting to get a new computer for a while now. Is there some way to maybe downgrade to 7 if I don't like it? Thanks.
ryan_J
I love it personally and don't really see why it gets such a bad rep.
018361
It really isn't bad once you get a feel for it. I have actually found it more convenient to use because of the metro style dash and the normal desktop dash. It has it's fair share of unnecessary and pointless features, but once you get to use it you will quickly realize that is basically windows 7 with a few more features. One of the biggest things that people dislike about it seems to be the lack of a "start" button, but it still has the features of using the start button. They are just put together in a different way. I really didn't like it at first, but after you learn your way around it isn't too bad. I hope I helped you in making a decision. GTA36362355
I'm on Windows 8.1 preview. (Has a 'visible' start button lol) I like the Metro design (I use a Windows Phone too) and it really is a simple, easy and fast interface once you get used to it. I think it's beautiful. Once you click on the desktop tile, it is no different than Windows 7 so I really do not understand why so many people think Windows 7 is better. The start menu isn't gone as they say it, in fact it has been made more attractive and customizable. What's wrong with that? Change always faces rejection for a while, I guess. Everyone wants to live in the good old days. Osho
dudeofSANTOS
I personally using it its too great first thing it have Fast boot (like it take only 3 sec to start completely) Metro UI, I personally like this but Windows Store is not good , apps and games are also not too good. and many more function which I like.... and windows 8.1 is coming soon..... GTA36362355
^ on windows 8.1, the store UI is much better and apps update automatically. I really dig it. Ya, the lack of good apps can be a turn off to some but c'mon, there are smartphones for apps, right? Windows Phone getting flak for lack of apps is bullsh*t imo. I never felt it lacking. Internet, teenagers and bad press, shouldn't be trusted. And to be more on topic, OP, you'll find yourself on the desktop most of the times which is no different than windows 7 and if you miss the start menu, there are ways to get it, stardock for e.g., just google it. Another good thing about Windows 8.1 when compared to Windows 7 and 8 is the grouping of files. Its simple. I really found the Libraries thing confusing. If you're okay with the cloud and want your files available to you from anywhere, you might appreciate the SkyDrive integration too. All in all, it has been a fulfilling experience for me but ultimately it depends upon what you make of the experience. Ben73
I have it. At first it was a weird and scary place to be, but after a week or two I was comfortable with it. I prefer it over 7 now.

SyphonPayne
I personally use Win8 on my laptops but on my gaming rig I use Win7 for the compatibility. I feel like Win8 uses less battery on both of my laptops than Win7 did (I dual-boot Win7 and Win8 on all of my main machines.)
yoječ
Aside from the lack of Start Menu it's pretty much the same as Win7.
kudoboi
pretty much a more powerful windows 7. use a 3rd party start button and you will feel at home
Pyrrhic
Apart from the whole "apps" thing in the start menu that pop up in the top-left hand corner it's great. I too prefer it over Windows 7 now, it seems to be more reliable and just seems easier to use in general. Shame Microsoft couldn't do such a great job with the new Xbox, then they might actually sell a few units.
Vercetti42
At first it was a bit slow, but now it's great after all the updates. At the start I couldn't play some games and stuff but over time I've got used to the new interface and all games work like a charm. Definitely worth it. ExtremoMania
It's actually pretty amazing dude. Windows 8 is more responsive than Windows 7 in my own experiences of operating it. Don't know why anyone say its very awful to have it cause quite accordingly it's one of Microsoft's most astonishing improvements yet. At first you'll be confused with the Start Screen but afterwards you get along with it plus it boots much faster actually (roughly 4 secs in my laptop and PC) than Windows 7 and concurrently, I prefer it now. Just wait for the upcoming release of Windows 8.1, which re-include the Start Button again (which I don't like it no more since I prefer the the Start Screen and the appearing shutdown/restart button on the right side of the screen as you flash it with your mouse). Mince
Sorry for the bump, but I figured we didn't need even more topics on Windows 8, so... One thing that's bugged me in the past year I've used Windows 8 (well, one of the numerous things) is the real inconsistency in some of the UI options. A common point heard from Windows 8 fans is that you aren't forced to use the modern UI. That's true in most instances, however there are some places where the modern UI comes up on the desktop for seemingly no reason. One example would be the system notification icons. The volume control looks like this: Looks like the old Windows 7 interface. (Note that I do have an Aero-style theme installed, hence why the borders look different.) Then the Action Center: Again, looks just like it did before. The battery status, as seen on my laptop, is the Windows 7 style: But then you click on the Networking icon, and it gives you this giant modern UI element: ... which happens to take up ~ 22% of my screen for no apparent reason. (Yes, I measured it.) This isn't much of a problem for me on the desktop, since I'll always be on ethernet, but when I'm trying to connect to Wifi at my school on the laptop, it's so ridiculous to have to maneuver my way through that modern-style menu. It's also totally out of sync with pretty much every other system icon in the tray. Something similar applies to the account settings: If I click on "Make changes to my account in PC settings", it brings me to the modern UI equivalent of the Control Panel. But why does it need to do that? Every other option is available on the desktop, and you could change everything in the Control Panel back in Windows 7. They purposely removed these features, but why? If the modern UI is about giving people a better OPTIONAL experience on tablets, why is it forced on desktop users that want to change their account picture, password, and type? I do have ModernMix installed, so the PC Settings will be displayed in a window... but it still takes up way more space and is less responsive than the control panel. These are just two things I can think of at the moment. Anyone else have similar feelings about the modern UI? I don't mind it whenever I can disable it or ignore it, but Microsoft purposely removed some things on the desktop just to confuse users and force them into Metro. Makes no sense to me. I've gone back and forth from loving and hating Windows 8 so many times, even wanting to re-install Windows 7 (deciding not to since I'd have to reinstall 100 GB's of games), but now I'm just left with confusion. Misbegotten cad
Windows 8 is brilliant!!! I got a new laptop last week, and with it, Win 8. I was quite suspicious of it, but now that I have been testing it for a week, I really really love it, for the following reasons: 1.starts up really fast. In seconds! 2.Very security consious! 3.Brilliant recovery system, in case your win goes haywire. No more need to make a recovery disc or anything! 4.And best of all, it runs old games really well! I've been gaming with PC for 16 years, so I have a huge pile of old games for it. Usually newer windowses refuse to run these old games even when patched. Not so Win 8. -For most old games run even without patches on win 8! And if there is a problem, Win8 solves the problem automatically for you, by setting the cobatibility settings for the game automatically!!! -This is brilliant for me. I even got Ultima 9 ascension running perfectly, for the first time ever! So, great windows version, although it takes a while to learn where to find essential files and programs on it. So, yes, this is worth getting. Osho
Misbegotten cad
WARNING! Win 8 does seem to have problem dealing with old savegame files! I have a lot of old game saves made under XP and even win 98. And I've been trying to use them with win 8 too. Now, Win 8 has no trouble reading these old files. Trouble starts when you try to overwrite them with new saves. This tends to freeze the system. So, be careful when bringing olde game saves to win 8. Good practice is to just copypaste one savegame to the saves folder of the game in question so as to avoid excessive trouble. word to the wise is all.
