A bit concerned about NPC driving ability

I love the idea of three protags, although I was concerned initially. There are several details I've been going over, but one stands out to me the most.

 

Franklin is the getaway driver in the sense of heists. So - for example - lets say we just completed a heist, all three protags are in the same car, and Franklin is driving. The mission is simply "escape the police".

 

How will the AI handle it if you switch from being Franklin as the driver, to let's say Michael so you can shoot at the police? Will the AI controlled driver be adept at driving, or is it going to be like when you told a cab driver to hurry in IV, and all he did was crash constantly?

 

Obviously R* put a lot of effort into improving driving AI, but I worry it will turn into "if you want it done right you have to do it yourself".

 

Maybe they won't even allow switching in instances like this?

The driving AI in GTA has always been hilariously terrible, I don't expect that to change here.

 

But it does create some GREAT comedy (see: SA's highways)

If it's anything like Trevor's piloting on the fib mission. I think we're gravy.

The difference is the skies are pretty clear so it's easier for NPC Trevor to get from A to B but by road that could be another story since car will randomly appear everywhere.

If you were driving as Franklin and then switch to Michael shooting, the AI Franklin should handle the car like it's on rails like in the mission JUST BUSINESS where CJ shoots and Big Smoke is driving the bike. It would be totally scripted I'd say. If you were driving and then switched so the AI takes over, the AI would look at the path needed to get to the destination and take the streets required to make it there. That's how it would work and I'd expect after 5.5 years of development it won't be retarded like taxis in IV.

Every time you had to chase an enemy AI in previously GTA games they were pretty skilled drivers so I'm not too worried.

NPC's are not always bad drivers. Just look back to some of the chase missions in GTAIV. I think the likely scenario when another character is driving it will be your responsibility to be sticking your head out thd window defending your ride.

I hate when i was driving at high speed and F****ckin!!! NPC´s hit me on purpose, turning against me.... really s**cks.. hope R* improve that...also the taxis, police and helicopters...

NPC's in IV are just the worst.

 

I absolutely hate when they merge into my lane as I'm doing close to 110 in an Infernus. I know you see me, so why would you do that? Are you retarded? Did mommy drop you on your head when you were young? Idiots!

 

And that's not even the worst part about them. After I'm done f*cking my car up, these assholes have the audacity to get out of their car and pick a fight with me as if I'm to blame for the wreck.

When you're in free roam with more than one character and you get into a car with, lets say Trevor, and switch to Michael, will Trevor wait for Michael to get in or just take off?

that's when you beat the sh*t out of them/shoot them >:D but I understand how you feel about them just randomly merging but at least after I hit them I just beat the ever loving sh*t out of them then shoot em

Best option would be a skilled AI that would get help by other NPC driving AI, per instance, other cars would limit their turns and speed making the Main Character's AI a better driver (or an easier drive, whatevur). Ensuring easy-handling AI with little immersion break.

In addition to fixing the crappy AI, I hope they also tinkered with how fast NPCs drive. Everybody drove too slow in IV.
