GTAVTheHeat
Does he have no faith in his own team, basically saying that they're not at the same standard of the Rockstar guys? What a c*nt, I'd be pretty down/angry right now if I was developing MSG5 Maybe he was just giving credit to a developer that he has taken notes from for MGSV.. But hes just stating his opinion and also he wasn't even aware what could be done knowing R*'s talent.
Zancudo
GTA > MGS.... How cute. It's the truth. I didn't know the word 'truth' was a synonym to an 'opinion'. S1LV3R_W0LF
Do you actually have a link for this and not just a screenshot? It's hard to believe that any game creator and even if it was true would say some other company game is better then his own game. Doesn't make any sense, unless he's trying to get a job in Rockstar. tenpennyisplainevil
GTA: III Not a milestone in video game history. You just went full retard. Never go full retard. How is GTA III a milestone? sales are irrelevant. please explain. The only special thing about it was that it had a tremendous amount of controversy surrounding it. Other than that... nada. No video game milestone. Groundbreaking is more like it. GTA III was the first of its kind. And became one of the most popular and addicting franchises in video game history. There was no game similar before it, and no game was able to properly mimic it after. So aside from the controversy, it was a set milestone because as with anything new and successful, it was probably very difficult, and as with each new iteration, it only grows and sets a new standard for open world games. So it was a milestone for R*, not for gaming history. It's not like every popular and original game gets branded a milestone in gaming history. Nothing special about GTA III, just a great game from the past. Well yes it was actually. When GTA III was released it brought it in a new IP and a new way to approach games, giving the player freedom to do what the choose and not just walk down a path to a goal point in linear fashion. While it was a milestone to R* personally, more and more developers trended the idea of giving the player more to do in their games; collectibles, bigger worlds to explore and combine/disperse elements of different genres of gaming. To say Grand theft auto had no impact on the gaming medium as a whole isn't properly giving credit where it is due and at the same time not paying attention to how video games have evolved since its release. EDIT- I'd like to explain further and not digress off topic that MGSV and GTAV have contributed a lot to the Video Game Industry respectively as well as individually. Comparing one to another is like comparing apples to oranges as one has already stated on this topic. However, MGSV has blatantly conformed to the approach of non-linearity made famous and popular by R*. No doubt that open world was a great step forward in gaming history, but GTA III wasn't the one to bring it to the table. GTA III is simply the first open world title to be in 3D. If anything, GTA1 is the milestone. Regarding MGS, MG1 was the first to use stealth and MGS1 was the first game to be really immersive rather than cinematic, which had a huge impact on gaming. MGS2 played into this even more with a story that uses the player's mind in the story almost psychological . MGS3 was an awesome game, but story wise not so special (only brought some features that are new to gaming). MGS4, same as MGS3 with a slightly lesser story, though still GOTY so nobody's complaining. With MGS5 apparently Kojima is really pushing the story taboo wise, so perhaps a comparable amount of controversy to GTA III in '01. @SILVER WOLF Just a nice developer for a change, showing respect to a great dev team. It's not like their games are the same genre, so no harm done. Edited July 11, 2013 by tenpennyisplainevil
UtricularEwe001
MG1 was the first to use stealth Nope. In 1981, Sega released an arcade game called 005 in which the player's mission is to take a briefcase of secret documents to a waiting helicopter while avoiding enemy flashlights and use boxes as hiding spots. 005 holds the Guinness World Record for being the first stealth game. Didn't know that Well, the stealth thing wasn't the biggest milestone of MGS anyway. Edited July 11, 2013 by tenpennyisplainevil

CryptReaperDorian
Hideo is by far one of the most reputable names and faces in the AAA video game industry. He's just complimenting, and possibly promoting, R* and GTA V. Here's hoping that R* also compliments MGSV. I think this could help to slightly attract each other's audience without having to change the formula of the games dramatically.

AceHigh11
I think Kojima is referring to the level of free control GTA V will have when he says MGS V can't reach that level yet. Stoic Intrusion
the only thing special about GTA III was that you play as a bad guy other than that there wasn't really much to it. It wasn't the first open world game it wasn't even the first 3d open world game on the PS2. There were several 3D open world games on ps1 even (not to mention PC), There was one in particular. Driver 2 you know a game that had many of the elements that GTA III had later? You the series that had the Google-earth switching thing before GTA had it? the game that for some reason got trashed by R*? The sandbox thing was nothing new at all. I agree that III made it popular to the casual crowd but so what. The biggest thing about III was the controversy and the commercial success. But i don't see how III's influence is even in the same ball park with MGS's influence.

It's not so much the fact that games were around doing similar things before GTA III, it's the fact that Rockstar took elements that existed, expanded on them and destroyed the competition. They created a world that was immersive, dark, seedy combining a number of gameplay elements seamlessly into a world of clever satire, amazing atmosphere and detail. Driver 2 let you drive a car, get out of said car and walk around looking to get into another car, that was it.
