mubd
As we've seen, the Australian Classification Board will refuse classification on games which show proscribed drugs as providing a benefit. This means that the game will likely be censored. What does everyone think about this?

Ryan Shanahan
Damn, the classification board over there are a load of pussbags, they introduced an R18 rating and still refuse to give it to some games. Yeah, it will be censored, unfortunately.

SMG
Smallo' date='Wednesday, Jul 10 2013, 02:15'] refuse classification on games which show proscribed drugs as providing a benefit. Marijuana is not a proscribed drug within Australia so it shouldn't be a problem right? It is proscribed, not prescribed, in Australia. I'm hoping that it fit's into "Context" as this being in context of a parody of Southern California.
brucie_suckyou
I saw this in the video and felt a bit sad that it would be censored. Trevor also cooks crystal meth. Will that, and any mini games associated with that also be censored? hmmm....I wonder.
Dick Justice
As long as it doesn't give you gameplay benefits like stat boosts, the board won't have an issue with it.

mubd
The previous MA15+ rating seems more relaxed than the current R18+ rating. Insane!
jamieleng
You can bet that's not the only drugs that the player will take, steal, deal etc. I would definitely order it from abroad if I lived there. I've sent eBay items to Australia before & there are plenty of reputable UK sellers on there. I can't see Customs taking an interest in every DVD sized case coming into the country, seeing as there must be hundreds of thousands every day. Your government acts as more of a nanny state than ours & that's saying something. It totally goes against your history & what your country was founded upon 'The Oppression of the majority by the British Crown & unfair taxes & restrictions on its people'. If they aren't going to treat you as sensible adults who can distinguish between fantasy & reality, then just circumvent them & try to remove them from power come voting time (I know the Aussie Classification Board probably isn't directly run by the government but I've seen some politicians weighing in on the subject). Sort of Off-topic: I bought the Predator Trilogy DVD box set the other day (for a nice low £5) & noticed that the last film 'Predators' was rated 15 & the other two 18. If Predators had been classified back when the other two were released, it would've got an 18 as well. So ratings in this country has actually relaxed over time, it's about the only thing that has. Matty
Smallo,Wednesday, Jul 10 2013, 02:15] refuse classification on games which show proscribed drugs as providing a benefit. Marijuana is not a proscribed drug within Australia so it shouldn't be a problem right? The guidelines state: "Computer games will be Refused Classification if they contain: (i) illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards; (ii) interactive drug use which is detailed and realistic." Red Dead Redemption had rewards/effects for chewing tobacco (restores dead eye). Max Payne 3 has painkillers (which can be classified as a prescribed drug and restores health). Alcohol features extensively in both games; particularly Max Payne 3. This is purely on the basis of context. Whether the characters can actually smoke to gain an incentive or reward (such as being able to slow down the perception of time; similar to a dead-eye slowmotion effect) or not. If not, there will be no problems. If yes, I don't know how the classification board will react to marijuana if it can be used for incentive or reward, and I predict that it will probably overstep the mark knowing how ridiculously sensitive the Australian Classification Board is; and the fact that marijuana is illegal in Australia. With that being said, California has legalized marijuana and GTA V's setting is based on California (or part of it), so it can be arguably justified by context on the basis that it is legal in the region of which the game is based on, like tobacco and alcohol - which hasn't caused a game to be refused classification because of their legality; so based on that - the use of marijuana might just make it through without the game needing to be refused classification and censored. Not holding my breath though.
Masher8559
What's the point of the adult rating if they are still going to ban or censor your games?
mubd
I'm guessing the ACB had to severely cut down on the proposed freedom the R rating would give game developers in order to get all state Attorney-Generals, especially the ones from more conservative states (Queensland, Western Australia), to agree to the R18+ rating. The resulting mess is this crazy ratings system.

Monty Mantis
I don't think it will be banned, probably not even censored. I believe, Aussie gamers correct me, the law says, "If an illegal drug is depicted or used to give the player benefits," but in this sense Franklin is buying a completely legal pharmaceutical. It can't be messed with since Medical Marijuana is legal In California and Franklin must have had a card to buy it. So it's fine, right? EDIT: The official law says, ""...elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards...", so basically what I said. MrcTOtheJ
Wow I'm glad that the censorship here is well, there is none the worse they can do here is slap the AO rating which the only game of note I rember geting that for any ammount of time was San Andreas with the Hot Coffee and that was because of Air heads like Jack Thompson freaking out about a removed feature the moders unearthed on one system, still being buried in the code. Grasping at straws and such. Say what you will about America (there's plenty of stupid sh*t here as well no doubt) but at least there's minimalistic oversight to the entertainment industry, seeing as due to the constitution they can't do to much to stop it. Anyhow Franklin did buy it legaly. I mean down in Cali and even elsewhere, geting a card for it isn't exacly hard with some Doctors, but still legal. Stoic Intrusion
I don't care if it's censored aslong as it doesn't get banned. what? are you serious? I as a german certainly feel for the australians we have to deal with the censors aswell though not nearly to the same extent the Aussie has to deal with them. And only when it comes to violence (gore ect). Sex and drugs are not an issue here in germany. But I feel your pain. I ALWAYS import if there is any even the slightest censorship.
