universetwisters
Hey amigos. I know that, outside of the V section, you guys are pretty wise of the world, so I'm coming to you guys for some advice and to ask a question: How do you guys keep focused and not let your mind wander in directions that take you away from your goal? I'm working on a collaborative project with some of my friends on here, and they're all cool with the idea of the project, etc. and don't get me wrong, I love working on the project, but sometimes, my mind wanders. Like, one minute, I'd be set on the project's goal, all pumped and sh*t, "Hey amigos, let's kick ass and collaborate and make some badass stuff", and so fourth. And then a few minutes later, I'm bummed out about the idea, saying "Nah, whatever it is we're working on should take place in this location, have these characters, etc." and I go back and fourth between the ideas and it really bugs the members of the project. I know it isn't fair for them to have to put up with my bullsh*ttery, and as such, I've been looking at ways to keep focused and not let your mind go into random directions, as has been the case with me. I've been going through what the doctors said about me for years, having ADHD, some kind of Aspergers, etc. and I've been trying to find ways to curb them so I can stay focused and reach the project's goal. However, the only things that I could find are either pills, expensive therapy, or don't even exist yet. So, how do you guys personally stay focused when you're working on something and don't let your mind wander?

universetwisters
Hard work, determination and nootropics. Nootropics might be able to work. I guess I can do my best and try to talk my folks into letting me take them, especially since they don't really like pills themselves, regardless of what they do. About how long do they last for/how much do they cost?
Fnorg
Hard work, determination and nootropics. Nootropics might be able to work. I guess I can do my best and try to talk my folks into letting me take them, especially since they don't really like pills themselves, regardless of what they do. About how long do they last for/how much do they cost? Well, I wasn't really being serious. I've only used nootropics - piracetam, to be exact - when I've had a sh*t ton of books to plow through on rather short notice to combat reading fatigue (law student). First try getting your sh*t together. Get a plan going, and working accordingly. Adjust as needed. I don't think nootropics would be that big of a boon when it comes to creative projects, which is what you're dealing with from the sound of things. You just can't make your mind up, that doesn't sound like a lack of focus per se. As for how long they last, that depends on how you dose them. That goes for both the actual effect of the drugs as well as the amount of boxes you'll need. They're dirt cheap and are easily found on the Internet, especially in the US since several racetams are sold as supplements rather than drugs. I won't link you to anything because I'm a dick like that.

Most of my problem isn't staying focused in the sense of reading, etc. but as in keeping an idea. Like, let's say you're leading a model railroad club (probably a stupid idea, but you may be able to understand it better), and you and all your friends decide to model...let's say Ohio or whatever, and you're all for the idea. However, you wake up one morning and say "Hey chums, let's model Germany instead!", and when you guys get ready to model Germany, you say "Nah, let's go back to modelling Ohio", and then when everything's back to normal and situated, you say "Hey, let's model Denver", or whatever, and that isn't fair to the other people in the model railroad club. WhitValid
You're just not satisfied with your project. It's not an attention or focus disorder. Make your own railroad that combines the elements of Germany and Ohio that appeal to you, then maybe you'll be pleased enough to buckle down. But damnit stop dragging your friends through the mess. Make a decision from here on out and stick with it! Changing plans frequently can often be a way of pussying out too, keep that in mind.

Right, it isn't fair to my friends that they have to be dragged through this mess. That's a very good idea you've got, of taking two ideas you like and merging them together to make one project. I also understand that changing plans frequently is a way of pussying out, since I've made model railroads in the past and they ended up failing. Whether me constantly changing plans is related to previous projects or not, I'm unsure yet.

universetwisters
Just have to think about the positive things of doing what you're doing, and the long-term effects of what your hard work will bring. Everyone has trouble focusing because there are a lot of distractions present in the modern world, but you really have to force yourself and constrain yourself from doing things that will slowly make your mind get used to that freedom of not working hard (because trust me, no-one likes hard-work; at least I have never met a person that likes to work hard). True that. Problem is, the "model railroad" is still in planing, and I can imagine my buddies who're helping out on it aren't really cool with me, seeing as that I keep changing details over and over again. I'll try to keep thinking positive, though, thanks for the pointer @Valenta - I agree with you 100% of the way. Gotta love Paul Elstak and all that good stuff, really makes you work quick! Guest
tbh just think of this topic every time you get sidetracked and force yourself to get your model railroad done. if you can't force yourself, then just give up. honest advice.

Supernutz40
When I need to really focus on something I just go to a quite room and do it. No music, no TV, etc... I don't typically have too hard a time focusing though. Grew up in private/Catholic schools as a young one, we didn't even know what ADD was. No one at my school had it, if you weren't paying attention you got swatted real quick...

Raavi
I always keep my eye on the proverbial ball. Some things might be tedious or even plainly boring in the short run, but in the long run they might just very well make a huge difference. For you that can translate into either a spending your days in a studio-appartment with Ikea furniture or living in a mansion in a gated community with custom-made everything. Reminds of how I came across an old classmate of mine a few months ago - the poor guy was cleaning the toilets in a venue where I was meeting a client. What I'm trying to say as that these are the years to make the difference my man, don't screw it up. Having a constant reminder like that ought to keep you focussed. – overeducated wonk who fetishises compromise

Right, I gotta make something that would remind myself to keep my eye on the ball.
