Maybe setting waypoints would instruct a character where to drive whilst playing as the second batting all the peds as you go by. That would be a sick mini game motorbike ped batting

I believe the characters don't exist in the world unless you're controlling them so it's impossible to meet. When you switch to a character the computer creates a random senorio for the character to be in to make it look like they were keeping busy. The google earth zoom out switch possibly masks a loading screen so the game can do this.

I think you hit the nail right on the head.

You probably can choose if you wanna hang out with him (do some activity), or just go away. I wonder how will he react if you just stand there, though.

Both wrong.

The scene, which occurs about a third of the way through and is just one of many heists players attempt to pull off, shows how players will get to control all three of the main characters, a first in a Rockstar game. And the characters won't be sitting idle when they aren't on screen, says Rockstar North president The Benz. "The player might switch to Michael as he's shopping with his wife, or to Trevor as he's being chased by the cops, or Franklin as he's chilling in front of the TV. The player might then take Franklin out to rescue Michael from the shops and go for a drink, or help Trevor deal with the cops."

I would think this kind of intervention scenario would require a phone call to trigger. The idea that the two unplayed characters and their lives, and the NPC interactions with each of them, persist off-screen at all times is just too incredible to believe. So, for Franklin to meet Michael, he couldn't just go to Michael's last known location following a switch and expect him and his wife to still be there. Franklin would have to call Michael or vice versa, and then and only then do the two characters and their scenarios become persistent until the "mission" to meet each other and do a joint activity is completed or failed.

I think you can approach them and then decide if you want them to tag along for a range of things including friend activities, side missions or just going on a rampage. thats what I'm guessing will happen.

Here is how I interpret that. When you are playing as Character A then Characters B & C are non-existent, you could go to their houses & wait there 500 in-game days and you'd never see them (assuming it's not to trigger a mission or something like that), however the game randomly creates scenarios where they pop-up in the world from time to time. They're not actually "living their own separate lives" no-more then the supporting characters in IV were living their own separate lives.

You could be Mike and driving out by Trevors house and the game will randomly (just off-screen) spawn Trevor in a drunken police chase which will then fly past you down the road, however he hadn't been in that chase all across the map for the last hour or at a bar beforehand or anything he's just been non-existent until that chase spawned by you with the aforementioned scenario.

So in short, to review they do not have autonomous lives that fold out before you 24/7/365 when you are not them, however they have various scripted scenarios that are triggered by you at various points in the game to make it look like they have fully autonomous lives.

If they scripted an event as you approached the area they were in would be good.

I dont think you can meet except in missions..

Explain this achievement then. And no it's not for offline

Three Man Army (20G) - Survive 3 minutes on at least a 3 star Wanted Level with all three characters together off mission.

This ^

Plus it's been said by Rockstar multiple times that YES you could randomly go meet each character in free roam.

They are here, alive.

And you could even kill (send to the hospital) one with another character.

Can you make them fight each other? If you shoot another one of them I'd guess the AI acts like it's friendly fire, but what if you keep attacking, then switch characters and counterattack the one you were just playing? Then switch to the third and watch the other two fight? Does the AI ever turn "red" (hostile)?
