Skinning gtavice

Recommended Posts

shibby

I was just looking at some screenshots and found hard facts the skins in vice will not be mirrored! this is way cool, it limited skinning in gta3 so bad =/

look at his shirt, it's not mirrored, not sure about the pants & face.

and looky here, you see the girl, her underpants... that would be impossible to do in gta3 because of overlapping parts & moving, so skinning is going to be soooo much more fun :)

Can't wait for vice! I bought a ps2 for it :p

I think all the peds have mirrored skins to save resources, but they all have functioning joints (I forget the fancy word for it), if that's what you're talking about.

even still, by the looks of it, skinning will be much more fun!

Well, I'm sure that some of the peds will use some mirroring now and again.  It saves alot of time in the dev process to do it like that.  But in any case, those soft-skinned skeletal animation models will be quite fun to work with.  Even if ZModeler can handle the GTA3 peds one day, I don't even want to bother with them cuz they're soo damn blocky. :p

Only bad part about the soft skinned models is that doing all the vertex weights and whatnot for the skeleton is a big pain in the a**. :/

i think samoth that u were referring to skeletal animation. so far from interviews suppposably the skins will be much more flexable to give a better look. will make great fun then for modding :p

No, GTA3 had skeletal animations too.

Here's what I mean. GTA3 had alot of modelgroups and each part of the body was skinned separetely, like the arms, head, legs, upper body/lower body etc, and they weren't joint together, is why GTA3's characters look so blocky. In VC, because of the better engine and all, they have FPS to spare, so they don't have to do this anymore. So now they can make every modelgroup connected to eachother, which makes the different groups stick together and flex in motion - In GTA3 they had this for the facial modelgroups during cutscenes, is why the facial animations look so good.

And because the whole body sticks together as a whole, they can make a skin for the whole body instead of for every part of the body, that also flexes with the model. But that has absolutely nothing to do with mirrored skins.

Mirroring skins is just an effescient way of making the images used for the skins half the size. All games use mirrored skins, unless they need not to, like if they want the lead man to have a scar on his right eye, then they draw a whole face.

This is exactly the case with Tommy. His shirt would look unrealistic if it was two halves, so they made a whole shirt instead.
