lectoryo
The Wire was a Great Show The Wire was an awful show. I live in the heart of Baltimore, and what they showed weekly on the Wire was literally like stepping outside. There comes a point in storytelling where if something is TOO realistic, it becomes uninteresting. Such as...The Wire. Though Omar was the sh*t. KingJames37
Once again, this topic is to discus the potential influence. Potential being the key word here...I didn't say GTA V is going to be influenced by Breaking Bad. I simply wanted to discuss the possibility of it, seeing as there is a meth lab in Trevor's trailer. Isn't a forum a place where people can discuss things like this?? Or am I missing something? I thought I read somewhere that the trailer with the meth lab wasn't actually Trevor's trailer... I mean he's peeing in the corner... But I don't feel like searching for the article or whatever it was. *EDIT* Oh and BTW Breaking Bad is an awesome show. Don't hate. TakinThyBacon
The OP's statement is kind of live saying that GTA is based off of Smokey and the Bandit because they have cars and police chases, although they share that similarity there is zero connection between the two that imply that one influenced the other. Besides, it is not the first time Meth has played a part in GTA.... http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=415649

TheKingYoku
I think Houser said he doesn't watch BB and other programs so he can have an original story..... But I'm not sure They're not being 100% truthful, trust me: Vice President of a biker gang, with a junkie ex-girlfriend, in constant disputes with the president on how the club should be run, during a war with a rival biker gang. Sounds like The Lost and Damned right? Well guess what? That plot was ripped straight from Sons of Anarchy, proving they watched modern crime TV. I'm sure they based The Lost and Damned on a TV show that came out a little under 5 months before the game. I'm also sure it only took them 5 months to make The Lost and Damned despite the fact they had the DLC planned before GTA 4 released and GTA 4 was originally going to be released in 2007. Come on man.
Dick Justice
I think Houser said he doesn't watch BB and other programs so he can have an original story..... Sounds like The Lost and Damned right? Well guess what? That plot was ripped straight from Sons of Anarchy, proving they watched modern crime TV. Sons of Anarchy first aired in September, 2008, a good few months after vanilla IV came out. Now, I know what you're thinking, The Lost and Damned came out in 2009, so it obviously copied it, right? To an extent, but most of the plot points for TLaD were already in place and were able to be read on the in-game internet before TLaD actually went live. Fact is, they're both really similar stories that landed at really similar times, which means they were being developed alongside one another, consequently making it really hard to prove one copied the other. For my money, it's just a massive coincidence. I personally think all claims of "influences" are moot at this point, because we simply don't know enough. Michael is a family man who see's a shrink, so he must be influenced by Tony Soprano, right? I don't know, it seems paper-thin. A lot of men going through mid-life crisis see therapists, is it really so hard to believe that both characters were influenced by modern society, rather than one being based on the other? Edit: Hey look, the person above beat me to the punch.
GlitzyTomb
I'd be happy to see them take some thematic direction from Breaking Bad though. Perhaps over the course of the game each of the protagonists has their highs and their lows. Even just having big decisions to make, like Micheal getting involved with crime when it might separate him from his family, and making the wrong decisions sometime would be nice. Breaking Bad had a nice tendency to allow things to spiral out of control, so you would keep tuning in to see how much further down the rabbit hole Walter White was going to go, and how the hell he was going to climb back out. That's one of the great things about Breaking Bad. Each character has their peaks and troughs. While Walt is down in the dumps, Jesse might be doing alright, or vice versa. While Franklin is doing really well off, Michael might be a complete mess, and that plays really nicely because it doesn't make you feel constantly depressed. Compare that to the segment in IV after Roman's business and home get blown up, Niko was really down but we didn't have anything to contrast it, so it was just a really black portion of a game that was already really dark. Dr Zoidburg
So we've already seen that Trevor has what appears to be a meth lab within his trailer. This is one hint as to a possible Breaking Bad influence on GTA V. I'm expecting a few missions, or a small story arc that resembles Breaking Bad a bit. Does anyone feel the same as I do? You may be right. I believe that there is a law that says ANYTHING portrayed in any form of media that involves the production or distribution of methamphetamine in any way has to be in reference to Breaking Bad. So based on that law id say your right.

MichaelPayneV
The biggest influence to BB I've seen so far is the relationship between Michael & Franklin. It is very similar to Walt & Jesse's. Father/surrogate son, Mentor/apprentice, Teacher/student. Michael is a master at robbery (just like Walt is a master at chemistry), and Franklin is eager to learn, and get away from those that are holding him back (exactly like Jesse!) So yeah, I really do think R* was inspired by that odd duo. In BB, there is a scene where Walt accidentally calls his real son "Jesse" by accident. That has always reminded me of how Michael called Franklin "the son he always wanted." Just my opinion, anyway. EDIT: Walt & Jesse is around the same age as Michael & Franklin, too. I actually see Michael&Trevor being Walter&Jesse, instead of Franklin, it just seems to me like Trevor is sometime manipulated by Michael, how Jesse is sometimes manipulated by Walter! But yeah, you theory fits to, but i see the "Breaking Bad" chemistry between Trevor and Michael, more then between Franklin and Michael! Hazencoke
QUOTE (Gregers08 @ Saturday, Jun 22 2013, 23:59) Breaking bad didn't invent crystal meth. This. I'm really confused as this sort of thing happens a lot (citing one very recent example as the "influence" of something that's been done 100 times before it). I imagine part of it is due to the age range for most fans of the game. So no. Pointless thread. you guys are morons don't judge a show if you didn't watch krashr
