So, I was kind of wondering about this..

Suppose there is a setting to enable or disable a minimap.

So, during Free Roam, When disabling a minimap, would it be adventurous or tedious to roam around the map without it ?

If for example you drop yourself very far in the countryside and disable the minimap, so how would it be ?

Also state your reason, it would sound plausible.

It's not my thing, I will freeroam without map guidance, but I like it there for reference.

Oh, without a doubt there is a toggle on/off.

You could disable it all in IV. It was sometimes difficult to find the bridges to get to another island at first but once I learned the map by sites and landmarks it was much easier. LS might be a little easier to get around since the city seems to be 1 big landmass with small bridges rather than long onramps that overlap other streets like in LC.

Plus without the map its much easier to stumble upon alleys and roads you havent been down yet

Definitely going to give this a go.

Still can't find my way around LC though. so will be really adventurous. Especially out in the countryside tounge.gif

ill-thoughts

once i understood the map for GTA4, i could pretty much get Anywhere in the world without it....and the only reason i kept it on was for Multiplayer purposes.

seeing as Los Santos will be about the same size as Bohan and Dukes combined, it shouldnt take me long to map everything in my head and turn the mini map off.

I actually play GTA IV without minimap or interface, it's much more immersive. I'd love to do that in V, even in missions, though I will probably leave it to free roam.

I think if you know the entire map by heart you most likely would not ever need the mini map at all.

I'd disable it once I'm familiar with most of the map. I did the same with San Andreas.

The only open world game I've played without a minimap at all, is Brutal Legend, and that was tedious as hell. Sure the map was easy to get around, but when looking for collectibles and general travelling, it's handy to know the exact location I am on the map without having to pause gameplay every time.

There was always a setting to disable the mini map. I usually disable it once I'm done with the story, I disable the whole HUD and just immerse myself into the world. You find so many things you would probably never find with mini map as it somehow always guides you towards something... I don't know, It's just more freedom without it.

But considering V is open from the beginning and we won't be forced to do the missions to unlock the map, I may just disable it from the very start and really get to know the world that way, before I start doing missions.

I think I will drive to the middle of nowhere in da dessert, turn off the minimap and try to get home.

Dude, that would be so friggin adventurous, and I don't mean that in a sarcastic way. Real Life doesn't have a minimap. It would be fun, spawning in a random spot in the middle of the woods and trying to find your way back to the city!

I'm half tempted to turn off the mini map without knowing the game map at all. It would be so much fun getting lost and will help me remember the map in my head. Realistically though I think I'll be playing with the map on until I'm at least used to GTA Vs map. It's a good idea though.

A little of both, actually. Traversing the map without your radar will indeed be adventurous, but it will also be tedious at times. Some roads make take you up the wrong mountain, or back to the city, or somewhere you don't want to go. This is part of the fun for me, though. Internalizing the map involves a lot of trial and error and getting around without the minimap is the best way to do it.

I don't want to see the enemies location, but there isn't a setting to unable te red dots. So I disable the minimap, but then It's pretty hard to do car chases and such

But If it is just wandering with no purpose, than adventurous for sure

Well, I always lost when I first play an open world game, even if I got the minimap, and it's friggin' fun. Then, when I learn where's everything, it starts becoming more boring confused.gif

It depends on the developer and how they make the world. I suspect that this would be loads of fun with no minimap. However, I always try to play single player exactly as I play multi (for transferable skills) so I'll probably leave the minimap at my personal 'most useful.'

During the story:

HUD=Off

BLIPS=On

After the story free roam:

HUD=Off

BLIPS=Off

I did this in SA and IV... with blips on, it just gives you a general direction towards which way your destination might be, it doesn't show you the streets or what obsticles lay ahead though. Perfect for mission and chases....

i've put more hours in on IV's multiplayer then through the story mode. i figure the same will go for V when it drops. in multiplayer, you learn the hard way that not having the map on puts you at a disadvantage when trying to move around fast or surviving other players that are hunting you from ground or sky.

I'm going to be adventurous and do a 1 meter grid search of the entire GTAV map, from corner to corner. colgate.gif

Kill Frenzy!

I don't need that feature, IV's Liberty City is in my head and I don't need a map for that and I know V will be the biggest map of all time but in the same time I will learn it in the end anyways so I don't need this feature and this is the only way to memorize the map faster.

I see it this way, as driving and exploring is my favorite part of GTA games. Most cars on them have a digital GPS installed on the dash, I enjoy having that GPS to help my driving experience be more smooth. Its neither tedious or adventurous to me its more like a tool.

Honest Bill

I usually enjoy playing games without the HUD on, but most games don't actually facilitate being able to play the whole game that way, even though they give you that option. For example, you pick up a mission, the mission giver will never tell you an address or anything like that. They might say "There's a house over on Dukes" and that's all you get. So when you start the mission you have no actual idea where you are supposed to go except that it's in Dukes. So it would be implausible to play the whole game without a map.

Also you can't tell when the cops have magically spawned behind you or around the corner etc.

On free roam you could play it like that, but other players would have their map on and be at an instant, insurmountable advantage.

So yes it's fun in theory, but most games make it impractical.

The second after I complete the mandatory first mission i am going to turn off the entire hud and get in the nearest sports car I see and gun it out into the countryside. And just explore with no map.

Exploring the world without the minimap is definitely something I'm going to do (especially during my on-foot trek across the map), but like Honest Bill said, it would be very impractical to play the missions without one, especially since as we've learned it's how we know whether the police are aware of our presence. It might be fun to go on a rampage treating as though it's real: with no actual knowledge of where your enemies are unless you see them, and whether or not they can see you, basically using your common sense, but that would be pretty difficult.

Luckily the meters are separate from the minimap this time. I liked the wrapping thing they did in GTA IV, but it did make the HUD look weird if you removed the minimap but kept the health/armor bars. This way we're able to remove the minimap and keep the HUD without it looking weird.

I liked somebodys idea of disabling the map, taking a plane, flying it to the sticks and trying to get back to the city in a self-set timelimit – like 12 or 24 hours in the in-game clock.

I remember with one save of GTA IV I turned off the mini map and tried doing some of the early missions. "Easy Fare" was a bit of a pain not knowing where the wanted radius was.
