Comparing the GTA V map size to a real life map

Just type in Los Angeles, shouldn't Los Santos be as big as LA?

I honestly hope for the sake of humanity you aren't being serious.

Sorry for my rude comment confused.gif

I really like your idea. But I just think that the scale is not right.

of course not. the GTA maps are never scaled to the actual thing. that would be gargantuan.

No... What I'm trying to say is Los Santos should approximately be the size of LA.

Not at a 1:1 scale. But I think a bit bigger that it's now.

Los Santos:

Ok call me dumb ( and you probably will ) but couldnt they just make everything except land mass 50% smaller, I mean like everything from buildings and roads to vehicles, peds, guns etc.. If they made all that stuff 50% smaller would that not double the size of the map again? I dunno why they didnt just take 20yrs instead of 5 to make this game then we could have like a real scale map of the whole friggin planet... ooh ohh GTA Antartica anyone??

The guy's being sarcastic obviously.

I like this and think it is cool. It does confuse me a bit since I don't have a very good sense of scale.

It would be a neat feature to compare maps from other games.

I think it's pretty accurate. I put it on my town and it does cover about 35 square miles, so yeah it's fairly accurate.

It's kinda amusing to see how what's considered to be a "big map" in a videogame, actually only covers a small portion of a real life city.

Interesting, I think it's accurate. At my first look it seemed to be quite small. But actually, it's slightly bigger than the town I live in which has a population of roughly 190k and about 8 or 9 different train stations. If this is indeed accurate, I think it's the perfect size for a map on a video game.

LosSantosInternational

i compared it to the size of my hometown ,which it has a population of about 1.3 million people, the width of the map compared to my hometown is pretty much similar.

I've just added GTA 4 smile.gif

Didn't read to the whole thread, but on his site, you can check GTA IV in the top corner. The comparison between Los Santos and Liberty City is very wrong. Can you explain where you got your numbers?

Oh sorry, just noticed it's the entire island and not just LS (right?). Then the comparison between LS and LC is not that far off, I guess.

If you'd like to explain why it's inaccurate then ill change it. The land mass of the GTA map outline put over the map is 49km^2 which is 3.5x Red Dead Redemption's.

According to wikipedia, San Nicolas island, which is close to the LA shore, is 58.93 km², which should be bigger than your version of the island (I don't know if 49 is correct, you'd have to check some dedicated threads). anyway, as you can see, the scale is off.

I like the update, but two things:

1. you misspelled GTA IV as VI

2. I can't seem to zoom in from the default position. I can zoom out, but not in, so maybe that's just the max zoom and it's not a problem. Would be cooler to get in a little closer though, especially when trying to compare distance between actual streets.

I overlaid the LC map over the same town of 30k I used previously and it fits almost exactly, so I think the scale is accurate to LS, since other mock-up maps have them being about the same size. Good job OP.

It isn't bigger then my hometown of Charlestown Rhode Island lol so this potential map of V is way off. RI is the smallest state in America and I did the calculations and V will be 1/7th of the entire state.

You're correct thanks for spotting this smile.gif.

I didn't take into account that Google maps displays different locations at different pixels per meter density, so for some locations the map was displaying correctly and for some it was displaying incorrectly. It all scales correctly now.

Fixed the typo smile.gif. And I'm working on the zoom level.

Well i put it over manchester (where i live) and i was sort of impressed as it was slightly bigger than the actual city centre... but i put it over the airport and that took up almost half of your map dontgetit.gif good idea and i appreciate the effort but i think the scale needs to be much bigger as i then put it over LA and it looks tiny smile.gif Good news for the game though i guess

Lock n' Stock

The closest city I live to is Preston, Lancashire. It was roughly the same size as Los Santos if not slightly bigger.

Well if rockstar are telling us the truth then I will be expecting a large city, bigger than Los Santos in San Andreas and bigger than LA in midnight club

Nice work OP! I was planning to compare GTA maps to real life locations, and now I don't have to do it manually. And I think the scale is pretty much spot on. icon14.gif
