Comparing the GTA V map size to a real life map

Long time lurker first time poster here.

I've seen a lot of posts about locations of things in Los Santos but not so much on the actual scale and size of it. A few days ago I threw together a small site to try and show the scale. It takes the estimated map size based on what Rockstar have said and overlays it onto a real world map to give you more of an idea of how big the map actually is. Hopefully people will find this useful.

Hey, welcome smile.gif

It looks innacurate to me to be honest.

I don't know if this is accurate. According to that map, GTA V is as big as Albany city here in New York. If it's that small I'll be disappointed.

Highly inaccurate.

If you'd like to explain why it's inaccurate then ill change it. The land mass of the GTA map outline put over the map is 49km^2 which is 3.5x Red Dead Redemption's.

Wow..... This is extremely inaccurate...

Just type in Los Angeles.

It doesn't make any sense :S

That looks a lot smaller than what the blueprint showed...

But thanks for posting anyway.

Why is there a map of London? I have no clue at what the scale of London is to begin with since I don't live there.

EDIT: Oh, it moves.

Firstly welcome to the forum, anyway the bigger the better.

That's interesting, to compare with my home surroundings. It gives a real sense of the area we get to play in.

I really like your idea. But I just think that the scale is not right.

Just type in Los Angeles, shouldn't Los Santos be as big as LA?

GTA V whole map hasn't even been shown yet

of course not. the GTA maps are never scaled to the actual thing. that would be gargantuan.

For Real... Kinda scary seeing that people actually thought otherwise.

Sorry for the abrupt post. I just compared it to my town, and zoom feature does not retain the size.

Hope that clears it up icon14.gif

No... What I'm trying to say is Los Santos should approximately be the size of LA.

Not at a 1:1 scale. But I think a bit bigger that it's now.

No, video game cities are nowhere near close to being the size of real cities. Not a half, not a quarter, not an eighth, not a sixteenth, usually not even a hundredth. Los Santos (the city alone, not the whole map) is about four square miles (which is about the same size as GTA IV's Liberty City's overall landmass). The real life Los Angeles is about 468.7 square miles.

If you were fine with the size of LC, you will be fine with the size of LS. Trust me. smile.gif

Lol, I don't care about the size. There are a lot of people who are complaining about the size.

But when they told us it would be roughly the size of LC, I was a happy man haha ;P

So, the entire Los Santos is smaller than a neighbourhood in real L.A. That's what this comparison shows. Highly unlikely, isn't it?

Basically the city part should be a bit less than a hundredth of the its real life counterpart. It's hard for me to tell whether that's the case here, though.

It's alright I didnt find it rude smile.gif

Liberty City was way smaller than NY, so I guess Los santos is the same.

It's ten times the size of my hometown. About 12k people live here.

Really liked comparing it to some of my favorite places. Nice website OP smile.gif

Not really. Large cities are just that, large.

All open world games do this, it should be common knowledge at this point that developers scale games in terms of size. Comparison to "real life" is silly. To make a game to 1:1 scale with a real life counterpart would be a pain in the ass and result in a whole bunch of limitations. Not to mention things would get boring quickly, especially when developers spent all their time on the map and not what it contains.

I think it's neat. I typed in a town I used to live in that had a pop. of 30,000 and it pretty much fit in the outlined area of just Los Santos alone. So if GTA LS is as big as a real life town of 30k then that'll feel enormous. I don't know anything about scale so I can't judge if it's accurate or not, but OP I hope when the real full map is revealed you update it. It'll be interesting to see how it compares then.
