When to use shotguns?

Please explain to me when it is the proper time to use a shotgun? I rarely use this weapon when in mission mode in the GTA series.

Do you have to mentally disregard your other weapons and settle with battling it out with the shotgun, or is it best used for certain situations?

Generally Close to mid range.

Shotgun is awesome for close encounters where there is little to no cover.

Whenever I was in tight interiors in GTA IV, I'd use the pump-action shotgun.

Now with customizable weapons & attachments, I imagine the shotguns could potentially be much more useful. Flashlights for night, different ammo types (incendiary, frag, slug, etc), and some other cool stuff will make them much more viable.

I really hope shotguns will be finally properly balanced, because in the previous GTA games, shotguns were only useful while they were fully-automatic mostly. (in GTA 4, there was no point in using a shotgun while the Micro Uzi was just alot better in killing people at close range whereas it was cheaper too). Pumping shotguns doesn't take forever also, many experienced shooters can cock a shotgun fast thus making it fire as fast as semi-automatic ones.

close quarters

when you are sneaking upon a single enemy

I jus love to hear that shotgun blast!! & watch the spread impact upon the enemy

explosive rounds were very cool imo

always close quarters, or if you wanna cause a massive panic.

Indoors, whenever running through those apartment complexes in IV I would always use the shotgun.

They seem to have an unrealistic spray though, most real life shotguns group much better at mid range than in IV.

I hope that in V they make shotguns more accurate. In real life shotguns will go out to 50 or 60 yards while in gta they only kill at about 10, making them almost useless for most situations. Hopefully in v they change it so they can be used for other things than close quarters combat

Yes I remember that mission, that may have been my only time of using it in IV. I failed that joint 3 or 4 times. sad.gif

Can't remember using it in SA either. Will try to learn from ya'll tips for V though.

I suggest using shotguns during indoor robberies and heists.

Maybe during your trip through the woods just in case a wild cat appears or any orher dangerous animal out there.

The only good use of the shotguns in 3D era was shooting cars (very destructive) and in IV, shooting twice at the rear tires.

I really liked the shotguns in MP3. They were quite powerful and worked at a good enough range. I think the improved feel of all the guns will make most of us switch up more to see what each has to offer.

In V, they should be great in interiors and when we need to blow up tons of enemy cars. They should be one shot kills this time too apart from enemies with armor.

As other people sad, close range. I found it useful if I could hit multiple tightly-grouped enemies with a single shot to at least stagger/drop them (although the wide spread worked against me, and I found myself having the shoot people 5 times to guarantee a kill). Also worked well against vehicles when explosives weren't an option.

IRL shotguns can be an incredibly versatile weapon, especially if you have multiple types of ammunition (birdshot, buckshot, slugs, etc.). They're also easier to purchase and own depending on the gun laws where you live (relative to handguns).

The spread on them makes them effective against wolves and other fast little critters that like to get in close.

If the animal AI is anything like RDR a shotgun blast will scare off an entire wolf pack.

Also pretty fun to blow off knees and faces with.

Close range combat when on a mission. But when I'm just free roaming, I love to do massacres with that thing!

I use the auto shotgun from vanilla IV probably more than most other guns in the game. It blasts buckshot very quickly in a spray at whoever is popping shots off at you and its a great way to at least take the opponent of their balance if you dont kill them right away giving you a chance to blast their face. The auto shotty also works well with long range so I can pick out opponents from even ontop of rooftops. The best place to use it though is indoors in a narrow hall way.

I love the shotguns in TLAD, even more the sawn off! maybe because I enjoy more shooting people from very close distances, and when doing drugwars for example, flanking while your team gets gunned down is the more viable way of getting out alive from it, and its more fun aswell! for me that is.

Shotguns forces you to be close to the enemy, to sucessfully kill them, which makes it even more challenging if there is a sh*tton of enemies around smile.gif

now when it comes to being useful, I dont think shotguns in GTAIV are the most easy way to get away alive, but its certainly the most enjoyable way to fight for me, so im looking very foward for them in GTAV. biggrin.gif

When you are angry at a pedestrian, you load up your shotgun, scream SHOTGUN RAIN from the top of your lungs and shot that f*cker in the face.

I remember using it on rare occasions in IV, but the machine gun was fine when cover was so easy to hide behind. If they made enemies rush you it would make using a shotgun more worthwhile because sitting back waiting for enemies with a machine gun would be made less useful and rushing could become a good tactic, the way Max Payne went,I could see many great mechanics incorporated from that so hopefully shotgunning becomes a more viable option.

Lol I remember the final mission of San Andreas I once beat it with the dual wield shotguns with the unlimited ammo cheat on haha! Those things were crazy powerful.

Triple Vacuum Seal

They are hardly used, but they do come in handy when necessary.

- When ever someone is taking cover behind an object or corner, a tiny portion of body is exposed as they shake and transition in between shots. A shotgun blast in their general direction will draw them away from cover as they painfully react to the shot. I used this a lot in IV when cops would take cover behind the driver's door. I would often just head shot them with a shotgun from the headlight in front of the passenger seat.

- Semi-auto and full-auto shotguns are great for protecting door ways and buying your self time to distance yourself from the aggressor to find cover.

- Killing automobile drivers without taking the time to aim and risk missing with another weapon.

- Temporarily incapacitating overwhelming swarms of aggressors as you switch to a sub-machine gun.

This. I used it a lot against anybody in a vehicle, if you didnt kill them first then the car will blow.

See, I hate how in gta iv I would be shooting my shotgun at close range and it would take two shots to kill, but if a cop shoots one shot at me from a long range, its an insta kill

Leafy Hollow

I would hate how 1 auto round wouldn't kill them in 4 completely.

That said GTA V will have the best weapons ever.

At the same time you'd use the SMG in GTA IV,,,when you want to Spray n Pray (innuendo noted), ,, and just scare the sh** out of the cops n ppl hiding behind cars...IV actually seemed to do a good job of having it where cops/enemies would stay down/not fire if you were blasting away with a shotty or SMG if they were behind a car or something

When to use shotguns?

When teaching a lesson to a drug pusher on the street with a sawed-off shotgun blast to the face, even before they finish their pitch. "Hey, bro, how 'bout some nice -" KABLAMMMM
