Hey people i'm just wondering, how much work can developers actually achive on 1 day of working on gtav? creating a model of a car? animation of a walking ped? sorry i don't know how the game coding works at all as you can hear, whats the hard part of working on a game.

I have no idea, also depends on console, engine, experience etc. I heard somewere that if you would re-create a ps3 game on ps4, it will take ~1 year less.

I would seriously consider that, I mean honestly by now the game is probably being tested and looked at from corner to corner, to see if there are remaining bugs or simply missing textures, or in other words, they are simply finalizing the game.

this is actually a good thread- can someone with some background in the industry or coding business shed some light?

Dr Bannington

I remember reading about Gran Turismo 5 development time and they said it took 1 to 2 months for each car. Obviously they had a big team doing multiple cars at once and theyre a little more detailed than gta cars will be but it sort of gives you an idea.

As a relative of a software engineer intern for Rockstar North, I can confirm that it does in fact vary. Usually most of the work is done on Saturdays, and testing/bug patching happens pretty much everyday.

This is important to mention. Maybe each car may take some time to be finished. But we must not forget not the full team is working only on the car. There are people for cars, NPCs, map, missions, story, activities, testing... all done at the same time.

The important question is can they still enjoy the game knowing every little detail, and testing it numerous times? barf8bd.gif

You mean like when you cook you can't stand next to your own food after you finish it? Maybe. Lucky are the testers if you think about it.

It depends on the area, and how good that employee is at that work.

First, they start off with the script (storyline, and all that), and depending on how big or in-depth it is, could take around a few months. Then I'm sure they storyboard how they want the camera in cutscenes to be positioned, and moved.

They then record audio and lines, which for a game of that size, would take possibly 3 - 5 months or more (once again, depends on how much dialogue there will be). 3D work is one of the biggest areas, and takes a month or more before they start designing it, which takes possibly 5 months to a year, due to the enormous detail. Getting and designing textures will take around 3 - 6 months. Character modelling, rigging, and syncing up voices would take 3 months or so, since they can just copy/paste voice syncing to other models, as well as re-use a rigged model (and change looks, dimensions, and textures). They use a 3D capture machine to rig and get animations, which makes it easier. Since vehicles aren't based off of real ones, modelling each would probably take a week (due to only exteriors having large amounts of detail). Other object models, depending on size, could take anywhere from a day to a month. All those objects could take months.

Writing the games code could take months, but depends on what you can do in the game (which is heaps). Finalising could take as long as they want, which I'm glad they spent plenty of time on.

Now, these are estimates, I don't work in the games industry, but went on a course to learn how to do many game-related things. 3D is a major aspect, and it is a lot easier if you know what you're doing, but combine that with every object in the game (thousands upon thousands), and it could take ages.

I'm sure Rockstar will share how long it took after the game is released.

But, if you are cooking the same food over and over again, then eating it again as well tounge2.gif are you lucky? monocle.gif It becomes bland and you may not even taste the difference as you know what to expect. Testing the game for 3-4 hours for bugs would be cool, testing it numerous times a week would be spoiling sadly.

Playing one mission over and over and over is no fun...

One GTA V map can be achieved in a day. All fancy and immersive details included.

Well, I could anyway . . . just sayin'

Yes, that's what I meant. For the developers, I think then can't even stand it anymore in the end. The QA team is the one will enjoy it more.

In terms of cars, you can do a basic car in a day or two. A day for easy stuff, 2 days for harder stuff, but then a longer period for textures, rigging, interior, etc. You can basically do most of the work the fastest - the polygons - the other stuff, the finishing, can take a long time, but they probably complete the very first pass of a car for approval by a lead in the department in 5 days. They probably target 5 days per car, before first approval/inspection by a lead. That's a guess based on how fast I can model a car, and having less experience than them, I can do it in a day, minus, again, texturing, rigging, detail work etc - the modeling portion, a day or two total work time, plus a few days to do the polishing stuff.

A building in a day. A few days to polish.

You can't really rely on these approximations though - you never know how many times you've got to go back and do it again for the lead, or how long it will take to do that ferrari vs that golf cart tounge.gif

I have no idea how testers life goes but it's gta.... They don't have contractor testers. They probley extremely to do this project.

Well, by now I think the game is largely finished (that is, out of alpha stage) and being tested to the max! While we will scream of joy on 17 September, the game testers will be utterly sick of the game.
