I think it will be fixable via the PS3's safe mode which should still work even if bricked. Besides this event I think there's only being one other major bricking event in the PS3's history, which was in 2009 I believe. However you're right, none of this is really acceptable whatsoever. The firmware has, to my knowledge, been pulled now so no-one should be in danger of this happening to them if it hasn't already. If it has happened already, you'll be better off discussing resolutions in the linked forum (above), particularly in the Official PS3 topic. Regardless, this isn't V related, and while I can appreciated why it was posted here - to warn others with maximum visibility - there is little reason to keep this warning visible now that the firmware isn't available any more.
