P.G.
I was watching the 2nd trailer, until I noticed this. in this 3 frames in second 00:34, trevor's t shirt seems to change their wrinkles from one side to another, but if you look closely, the third image is the same as first, just horizontally inverted, also with his pants. it is unlikely that a cloth simulation comes in the RAGE engine, so I think there will be multiple bump maps for each character, and they will switch depending of the position, like in this image. what do you think about this? TheDeaconBosco
Maybe so... But the Dynamic maps seems to have been scrapped as they're not present in the character trailers.
nigelhere9901
Dynamic bump maps? you've created something new out of your ass. And just for your information, GTA IV used Normal Maps instead.
RedLightsBlueNights
I'd like to call these animated normal maps. They're cheap on resources, and are convincing if done right, like with the horses in Red Dead 2, and Max's shirt in Max Payne 3.
Backfire6
lol...Why would anyone care about something so small as clothing movement? Especially in a scene I could care less about. I normally skip the scenes in every game anyway so I certainly don't give a damn.
Ash_735
it is unlikely that a cloth simulation comes in the RAGE engine, Man, you should tell Rockstar that then as Max Payne 3 already has it, they must be doing something wrong.

Dope_0110
This is NOT cloth simulation, how can so many claim it is. Cloth simulation means what it says in the name, simulating the movement of cloth. GTA doesn't have that, and instead uses different bump maps to simulate wrinkles on the clothes. And I agree with OP, It seems they did add dynamic mapping so the game uses different bump map textures at different point of animation to make it seem like we have pretty realistic clothing. DS 17
Wasn't there a necklace moving in one of the trailers? Don't remember anymore which trailer it was or who had it on. Maybe Franklin's?

Rockstars first game utilising its new R.A.G.E Engine, Rockstar Table Tennis, was well renowned at the time for its clothing. cloth physics, so yes it does come with the RAGE engine, its just depends on the intensity that it is programmed into the final game. IM_YOUR_GOD
It could be cloth movements.. Remember the curtains.? I don't believe this is normal mapping. It was in MP3 and RDR. Subtle movements in you gear.
OG__Jay
Thats not "cloth physics" at all nor its an animation. They just use three normal maps and when the character moves, they just switch between them. To have physics on clothes would mean to be modelled in great detail so that they can get "wrinkled" and they would depend on the gravity in the game. It wouldn't even look good and it would require A LOT of resources.

Especially that Dope_0110 guy. THAT is cloth simulation. Cloth simulation means POLYGONS deforming. In GTA games there has never been and no trailer implies to cloth simulation being there. Look at the SHAPE of the shirt on Trevor in OP's example and you'll see the polygonal shape remains THE SAME in all screenshots. The only thing that changes is bump map texture, a neat little thing that let's the game know how to render shadows and lights on objects to put it simply. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_mapping Edited June 19, 2013 by Dope_0110

Especially that Dope_0110 guy. What are YOU smoking? Current gen consoles can't handle extensive cloth simulation. By extensive, I mean cloth physics on every piece of clothing on a person or multiple people. The most a console can handle is one cape, or coat on a person, and a few hanging cloth. to make it look like there is cloth simulation. When the polygons change position, the bump texture is changed to make it appear as if there are more polygons on a person than there really is. As I've said, it's cheap, and inexpensive on resources and looks convincing.

killdrivetheftvehicle
First off, I'd like to state, that I'm no expert in computer graphics. But having said that, and having watched CLOSELY all of the trailers, I'm pretty confident that Trevors model with his "white" t-shirt is unique. The wrinkles don't look like the other characters. They have simple "painted on" textures on a flat model, whereas Trevor's t-shirt is a 3D model and the wrinkles are on both of his sides. When the character is animated, the model twists, and it appears as if the "cloth" is moving. However, the shirt has no wind effect, or gravity effect. In fact the only cloths that are moving, are on the first trailer the characters wearing a waist tied jacket (The sleeves are moving), and ofcourse the flags waving in the wind. It looks as if any character wearing an open jacket has the jacket glued to his sides, just like in IV. First appropriate Cloth Simulation was featured in a Batman game for the original XBOX. http://www.gamesradar.com/a-brief-history-of-cloth-physics/ You guys literally have no idea what you're talking about. Cloth Simulation does not require some massive compute power and the current gen consoles have enough floating point operations per second to simulate real time cloth. THERE IS NO f*ckING THING AS DYNAMIC BUMP MAPS.
