I love it, but the only reason it's 'the best GTA' is because of the nostalgic factor. No one who plays GTA V before III is going to say that III is superior.

Going from Vice City to GTA III was a disappointment for me.

Still a great game nonetheless but I loved flying choppers, the dialogue, the Mansion, businesses, etc from VC.

SA on the other hand was a revolution for me...The map size, playing with bikes, planes, jets, parachutes, casino games, car customization ... Which to me, SA will always be the top of the line R* pushed the limits of the ps2

I disagree i would say of the 3D era Vice City or San Andreas has to be the best. GTA3 just felt so....lifeless....i don't know how to explain it. It is still a good game just not the best.

gta 3 was meant to be lifeless. if you made it full of life (by reppacing the textures and sky with vive city) its boring.

I don't think GTA III was meant to be lifeless. We have to remember it's nearly 14 years old after all, but it feels like something happens on every street corner.

Yes the A.I isn't as polished as later games however IMO the random crime in the streets makes it anything, but lifeless.

GTA III, along with LCS still has some of the most unique transportation infrastructure in the series. For one, it features a dynamic bridge called the Shoreside Vale Lift Bridge. Secondly, it features arguably the most complex underground tunnels called The Porter Tunnel. Finally, in LCS (although not strictly III) features a Vehicular, and Passenger Ferry Service.

These have yet to be repeated in any other game. :)

Going back, GTA III is better than both Vice City and San Andreas in my opinion.

GTA III is the game I played and enjoyed the most. :cookie:

It was my very first game. Thinking of the sleepless nights I spent hunting for cars to sell and armoured trucks to steal/rob. :pirate:

I'd love it if R* were to do a re-make for PS4, perhaps with a different story. :r*:

Till then, ... :bbq:

I've got to say GTA III will always be my favorite of the series. It was revolutionary and really set the standard for all games to come (including games outside of GTA). I consider it to be the GoldenEye 007 of it's time.

No, it isn't the 'best' GTA in my opinion.. Because I didn't like the setting at all, and the weather was too bad.. The storyline is instead

of the weather absolutely nice, but that doesn't mean I had a good experience with GTA III. I prefer more a sunny-setting or something

like that.

Gta 3 will forever be the best just because of the nostalgia it brings me and I remember first hearing fade away play on head radio and it was raining in the game and everything just seemed to go so well together also it took open world gaming to a whole new level and for that 3 can never be topped.

I think SA is the best because it included a lot of new things, oc GTA 3 was also new, being the first 3D, but SA created a new concept mixing sandbox, RPG, action, cars... You can play SA like it was 4 or 5 different games.

Then GTA 3 obviously has to be the 2nd for me. 2001, 3D, open world. It was a revolutionary game and a total frontrunner, the one that gave pass to the all another ones. When you talk about old games you can't justify your ideas with quality, storyline or features but sure you can telling what they meant in videogames world and taking into account all the difficulties they had when developing it at these times.

GTA 3 is far from being the best GTA however it's what made GTA the thing it is today and maybe open world games wouldn't be the same as we see them today if GTA 3 didn't exist. For that GTA 3 deserves praise. Especially more than a game like GTA 4 which ruined all the progress R* made from GTA 3 to SA and went absolutely downhill.

For me:

SA

V

VC

TBOGT

III

VCS

IV

LCS

TLAD

GTA III is a good game but it's not the best GTA, not at all. Like everyone said, playing it for the first time was really a groundbreaking experience because I've never played something like that before, but terming it as the best GTA is quite an overstatement. It had great characters except Claude, the storyline was great, the gangs were awesome but it's far away from been the best. The best GTA for me is IV.

GTA 3 is a good game but I wouldn’t call it the best GTA. 4 and EFLC are my two favorites followed by Vice City and then 3 comes next. It had some pretty good characters with Claude being my fifth favorite protagonist in the whole game series behind Niko, Johnny, Luis, and Tommy. I especially liked his outfit and how he looked sorta like Elvis Presley or Johnny Cash with his hairstyle. This may not be a very popular opinion, but I actually liked Catalina as a villainess. I thought she pretty much had what it took to be one. A tough, seductive, intelligent Colombian drug cartel woman, with the very last part being fitting for a villainess in a GTA game.

Sinner!

As much as I love III, I don't think it's the best GTA, but it's Tartarean & minaceous atmosphere, has a certain magic that no other game in the series can quite match.

GTA 3 lacks many features to be the best episode like a wide playing area, bikes, helicopters, driving trains, buying companies, visitable interiors, a customizable character and I probably forgot a lot other things.

GTA 3 is far behind San Andreas in terms of quality and gaming pleasure.

But remember the best is not the one which includes more stuff, I briefly explained that in my last post on the topic. Despite in this case SA is the n°1 it's not that far of GTA 3, it's not about 3 does not have, you have to turn around that idea and think what GTA 3 could not have been and the luck we had the game developers decided to make it 3D, to include boats, to have three islands and etcetera. To sum up, historical reasons can distort the value of the game if you take them into account rather than analizing games only for their quality you feel they have nowadays.

I wlawys had trouble trying to figure out which one is the best GTA - 3 or SA. By a very small margin I am tempted to say that SA - thanks to it's diverse landscape, large variety of missions and things to do. When it comes to enjoyment and realism then I think GTA 3 beats SA if compared by the same factors e.g. driving in a city, or crossing a bridge.

GTA 3 map was extremely well designed (to the same level as SA), but the little additions made it feel much more like a living breathing city that Liberty is. Stean rising from the manholes, people listening to music on their Walkmen, the screeching sound of the tiny but very well done monorail trail...

An on top of that the amazing athmosphere, weather, colours; all very carefully picked. I like how GTA 3's map has changed signficantly since the initial blueprints, which I find quite fascinating. It is almost like observing the city being developed in real life.

You can walk down the seafront at night near your Portland safehouse and feel the immersion, feeling the isolation from people, but bond with the world.

Or walk through the Red Light district in the evening, people rushing home, some dodgy characters standing in the alleyways, and occasional car speeds up and dissapears near the council flat blocks.

Or driving your Stinger while listening to Rise FM through Shoreside Vale, what an experience!

Despite being very limited, this game offers an amazing freedom. R* sqeezed in entertaining rampages, off road challenges (in the city!), small side missions - more than SA had, I think.

The music of the era, the wonderful blu-ish tint to the grey buildings - it all feels very much lilke my home city, and that is another reason I love the game.

SA is the game I can spend more time playing and having fun, 3 is the game where I can just walk or drive and not feeling the need to do any activities. Just appreciate the amazing rich world that surrounds you.
