GTA V Confirmed as Digital!

Recommended Posts

Well when you buy a game that is day one digital on PSN the game unlocks midnight of release day. So when people are heading off to pick up V at a midnight release, you can start your download.

I usually get decent speeds when I download games so it'll take me maybe 3-4 hours. Either way I will be playing long before a copy would ship to me or I could pick it up in a store since my EB is not having a midnight launch (it's in a mall).

I remember I bought MLB 13 day one digital which was a massive game. It was two parts that were around 11 GB's each. I got it downloaded in about 3-4 hours at I think 2 mb/s.

I'll be getting V digital and then waiting for my SE physical to come.

I regret nothing. It's GTAV.

If you buy online for download, won't it take hours on a normal broadband connection to download? And also no booklet/map?

Why not just get the hard copy?

If you live in an area that would take hours to go pick the game up at a store(like me) is one of the reasons to buy digital. With Day 1 Digital games on PSN you are also able to download the game Midnight local time. And yeah I might be a little bummed about the map, but it's a small price to pay instead of having to go out and buy a new PS3 seeing as my disc drive is dead. I also made a promise to my friend yesterday that when GTA V is put on the store, which I guess will be today, seeing as the store still hasn't updated, I'd make a new PSN account(my current one is on two PS3's) and buy it on that one and let him download it. And with the 75% off on any other R* game I could finally pick up Midnight Club LA, as that's the only one on the store I don't own. And at 5 bucks it's a steal.

@lazloisdavrock: It does. And it has since May of 2012. It's just not many developers support it I believe. I'm almost sure that Borderlands 2 supported it. Sorcery supported it, and maybe Mass Effect 3 as I remember reading something about that. FFXIV:ARR is the latest title to use it. I had the full client download on my PS3 last Tuesday, even though it was 2 weeks before the launch. Might have had to do with the Phase 4 beta starting the following weekend though.

I have some doubt that GTA V will support pre load, but if it does, at 12:01 AM on the morning of September 17th, 2013, I will be starting GTA V for the first time. And I'll be playing into the sunlight. I'll be taking September 17th, 18th and 19th off work, and once again I'll be taking October 1st, 2nd and 3rd off work. 3 days of constant playing of GTA V and GTA Online is sure to keep me busy and relaxed.

The pre order is going up today?

I believe it's going up in a few days. I think Friday or Tuesday....

Soon....

Yeah they mentioned Friday, but the store does update today, and we haven't gotten it yet. New games aren't even searchable like they normally are a few hours before the store updates. We'll see in an hour or two if the pre order is up today, or Friday.

@Frantz Fuchs: Games that are available for pre order on the PSN store are always Day 1 Digital.

In the link all I see is the PS3 bundle and 75% off.

Where does it say about day 1 download?

The link says at the end that those who purchase V on PSN get 75% off on other R* titles.

Also it was stated during Sony's GamesCom conference. They legit straight out said V will be available for pre-order on PSN very soon, Friday or Tuesday I do believe.

And if it's on pre-order for PSN it means it's day one digital for sure.

While it would have been silly not to be, it's good to know that it's going to be digital from release. I just hope PSN follows suit. It seems that gaming will solely be digital in the future, hopefully the marketplace will be adequately prepared for the onslaught if many people choose to download.

Steam is doing it for several years, and the only problem you can see when sales are on... Maybe if they implented bittorrent protocol, it might make things easier, but not for thoose who pay per upload...

They should make it so you can completely install the disc. That way those of us that like having the disc can still benefit from doing a complete install on our system, or have the option to do the traditional way of playing with the disc and a partial install to save some drive space.

Only problem with that is, then you would need a serial code or some sort of online validity check to prevent the game from getting installed on a bunch of different consoles from only one disc.

-edit-

I'm one of those people that prefers digital downloads over having to change discs to switch games or even worse, in the middle of a game... Even so, I am going to stick with my pre-order of the CE. If GTA V is ever available as a digital download for the PS4, then I will definitely be purchasing it again digitally. By that time, I'll probably only use my PS3 for V anyways.

The only downsides about digital downloads is that current gen consoles take too long to download and install games. If you go to play a game and discover you deleted it to install a new game, hope you weren't in a hurry to play, cause it'll probably take a bit to get that game again. Sounds like that problem will be a thing of the past with the PS4 though.

Here's another article for those that want it: http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2013/0...rockstar-title/

Finally putting the questions to rest, it was announced at the gamescom 2013 PlayStation Press Conference that Grand Theft Auto V will be a Day 1 Digital title on the PSN.

If you pre-order the game from the PlayStation Store (expect the pre-order to appear soon), you’ll be able to get 75% off any Rockstar title.

K I went back and re watched the part. Pre order access will start this Friday. We'll get 75% off any R* game and we'll also be getting the pre order DLC. I know its still early and they need to clarify some things(they haven't even made a blog post about it yet) but I'm hoping that they'll have a digital collectors edition for say $80 or something.

And with all PSN pre orders we should also be getting an exclusive theme.

I'm assuming you would still expect to get the stuff you would with the physical copy of the CE? If so, I highly doubt they would sell it for any cheaper then the physical copy. Can't say I've ever seen a digital download ever release at a cheaper price then the physical copy. I'm sure it may happen at times, but highly unlikely it would in this case.

I was more referring to a digital CE that has all the digital content minus the physical stuff. FFXIV:ARR has a digital CE that is $60, with the standard being 40. Physical CE is I believe 80 or 90 dollars.

Also in American and Canada at least, all Digital downloads are cheaper than physical(unless you buy used or have a discount card) because of taxes.

I know it's wishful hoping but yeah. I whole heartedly believe the SE will be available for download though.

Can somebody please tell me why some people are  happy with day one dig.download?

I mean what's the point?

The point is some people prefer digital for whatever reason (whereby digital is the fastest method of them getting the game) because as I explained earlier day one digital games on PSN allow you to start downloading at midnight of release day. Also for those in the US and Canada it's the same price (if not cheaper because of no taxes) as a physical copy is. In addition to that I personally already have some PSN store money in my account so it's already cheaper for me to begin with.

For me personally, as I stated earlier, I can buy digital and have it downloaded within....maybe 2-3 hours, 3-4 at worst after midnight of the 17th. I generally get good speeds on PSN. MLB 13 I was able to download in 3-4 hours and that game had 2 parts which were 11 GB's each.

I'll be playing my digital copy long before my physical copy arrives at probably 2 p.m. of release day, best case.

@Bronxsta

Apparently they will unlock pre-orders on Friday.

Exactly. I'm in NY, so it's cheaper (no tax), I can start the download at midnight so it'll be downloading as I sleep, and it's just more convenient. TLOU was 26GB and U3 GOTY was 40+GB so who knows how big GTA V will be and how long the download will be.

And we get GTAO with the digital copy, as well right?

With possibly hundreds of thousands of people downloading at the same time you think it will go so smooth? I mean this is the game of a generation their servers will be beyond full smile.gif

I imagine so since it's two separate things.

When you download a game from PSN the entire game then installs to your HDD before you can play it. I imagine a disc would still have to install the mandatory 8 GB's. That shouldn't take long.

If you buy digital and have a decent speed you can start playing before 9 a.m. release day. Hell probably even before 6 a.m. if you stay up and then if you have a physical copy on pre-order that you are waiting for you can continue from it once you get it.

@J Hater

I've been downloading games digitally for years now. Off Steam and PSN, primarily. I have never had problems no matter how big the game and I have downloaded popular games in the past. Perhaps not as popular as GTAV since I don't think anything reaches that level but I don't expect to have issues. Instead of my usual 2-3 mb/s I'll probably get a little lower but still get a decent speed.

@Dutch Psycho

It's an example and something that I am doing, too. I have the SE pre-ordered. I am buying the game for my brother as well so that's why.

I regret nothing. It's GTAV.

Okey i see but you basicly buy the game 2 times? Or was that an example that your physical copy arrives later?

That you get the game on your HDD immediately and don't have to worry about picking up and storing a copy.

That's what i call lazy sly.gif

I call it smart.

GTA V will roughly be between 14-17 GB I believe on PS3. GTA IV was about 10 GB.

GTA V for Xbox needs 2 discs which you can install all of it on the HDD if you want which means

that GTA V can't be more than 17 GB since Xbox discs can only hold 7-8 GB approx.

So won't be the worst DL ever for some of you fortunately.
