Agni
Car detail probably didn't improve much, and let's face it, it doesn't need to, since IV's vehicles were already good looking. The big change here is the lightning and reflections, both are very improved, and that will change dramatically the look of the vehicles, as can be seen in the screenshots. I agree, the car textures are great, and reflections do like like they've been improved The bottom screenshot is just a bullshot almost certainly taken off of a PC. Don't expect the actual game to look like that.
Gnocchi Flip Flops
because we've only seen trailers and stuff, not in game footage. I'm also curious about the reflections on the cars, and how good it will look The trailers ARE in game footage! And the gameplay trailer is how the game will look! Screenshots aren't reliable but the 6 trailers are so we already know how the cars look and everything. From my view the cars look a little more detailed than IV. The reflections are better, the details are better, and Rockstar made sure the brake calipers on the PS3 version weren't missing this time. @Agni, no offense but you're full of sh*t! Rockstar confirmed that those screenshots were taken from PS3 back in November. A PC version isn't even confirmed yet.

brian.
I know we've all seen the cars and other vehicles from V on the trailers and screenshots already , but when I was playing gta 4 a little earlier I was zooming in close on the brake lights and other parts of the cars, and the textures are just so freaking detailed, especially for 2008 graphics. Even little words on the some of the cars, like car names on the back of cars, are just so detailed when zooming in with a sniper looking at them. So I wonder how detailed these cars will be in-game on V, because we've only seen trailers and stuff, not in game footage. I'm also curious about the reflections on the cars, and how good it will look I would say it is very safe to assume everything and more from IV. Assume every car to the highest standard seen in IV, returned to or new car, iterated on, different body kits, different parts, everything and more, to a "slightly" higher degree - maybe engines have a few more pixels, not much, but a few more, for a couple extra polygons here and there, and maybe chromes are a nicer material and reflections improved, but overall expect a collection of cars, some of which from IV already, iterated to new levels of polish, and also levels of detail, in customizations. The cars will be super sweet looking for sure.
PHOENIXZERO
Would be nice if the dirtier a car got the less shiny and reflective it'd be, never been a fan of cars always looking like they just got detailed, buffed and waxed or a new paint job. I'm expecting with dirt roads and all that wilderness that dirt will stick on them and taking a car to a car wash or repainted will make a much more noticeable difference. There should be no doubt that V's cars will look better though, even if it's just a small improvement. It's been five years after all.
LaDispute
The cars look waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. GTAIV has nice cars too, but this is a large leap in quality.

Textures can't get much higher or more complex in this generation of consoles due to RAM. The improved lighting is really what is making this game seem so much better than before. Obviously animations can be improved, and we already got a taste of that from RDR and to an extent MP3 Added together yeah, a good improvement overall. That's true about the texture detail, hardware limitations will not allow the resolution of the textures to go any higher however there are techniques that can be used to mask the limitations and give the game the appearance like it's running on next gen hardware, this is the advantage of developing a game for that one specific set of hardware, (console) you can fine tune and make adjustments until you hit the sweet spot between visual detail and performance.
