Will Multiple Protagonists Become the Norm?

The Pizza Delivery Guy

Will we continue to see multiple playable protagonists in future GTAs, or is this a once and done situation?

Because with GTA IV's DLC, it looked as if R* wanted that game to have 3 protagonists, but they didn't have time/ wasn't possible then. Now there are 3 playable protagonists.

With that in mind, think we'll be seeing it or a form if it from here on out, or does it start and end with V?

This isn't the first time a GTA game has had multiple protagonists and I doubt it'll be the last.

I don't know if I will want multiple protags again after this. I'll just have to see how it works out and how everything works and such. I don't think they will do it again, but if they were to decide to or not, I'm sure it depends on the fans reactions.

I also wouldn't put it behind R* to have a female protagonist in the future.

Won't be the last, I can tell you that. Depending on the success, multiple protags is going to start showing up everywhere.

I feel the next game will only have one protagonist. Having more than one wouldn't work, as it would feel too much like the previous game. You could say the same thing about having one character but that's completely different.

I'll have to play this GTA to decide, I think it'll just be to much.. Maybe not the next GTA but the one after.. Nobody said there just can't be Two Protags, maybe the next GTA is about Two Brothers. Who the hell knows, but honestly.. I'd prefer just the 1 or 2 for the next game for it not to seem like it's been just copied over pretty much.

Makes no sense...?

I don't mind either way. R* always delivers. But I reckon they'll go for 1 or 2 protags next time around

Because having 3 in V is different.. If you'd just do the same thing in the next Game it'd feel like a complete Rip Off? Two would work better, but.. I can't say.. I think they're will only be one again, and what I think he meant by just having one is well.. Every game with sequels usually just has one, its not strange or unusual. But I get what his saying. But I don't think it wouldn't work, I'd just feel like well.. I've seen this before not to long ago. Depends how it's planned out and what the story is tbh.

Uhhh the first GTA game had multiple characters...

Not that you could switch between at will. dozingoff.gif

I expect to see multiple protags implemented not only into future GTA titles, but also other IPs, such as Red Dead, Bully, Agent, etc. Why would R* spend so much time developing such a complex mechanic and never use it again?

Also, wasn't there a recent article where someone at R* said multiple protags were the future of open world games? This was obviously meant to hype V, but it only makes sense that R* is going to evolve this concept further.

It depends if whether this will be a success or not. If people really like this then I guess they will continue doing this, maybe even with more than 3 protagonists. But if people don`t really like it then I guess they won`t do it.

GTA IV: 3 playable characters, but they all were in kinda separated arcs

SPOLERS FOLLOW

RDR: 2 playable characters

LA Noire: 2 playable characters

GTA V: 3 playable characters

I suppose I'd argue it already has.

RDR and LAN for diffrent reasons though. Obviously the Death of said first protags.

That said it may become the norm, hell I think we'll see a Female protag sometime as well still, but I'm sure she'll come in when it's a multi protag game. (Since there are so many people hell bent to be against it.)

I think they will have to, anything else will feel like a step backwards in the evolution, just like the modern setting. Don't get me wrong, Vice City is my favourite, but it would be tough going back to it.

I have to disagree on the time frame thing.

GTAIII took place in '01 the year of it's release as did GTAIV ('08) and as well GTAV with '13 as well.

But after GTA, we saw the 80's and the 90's twice. But nothing past '00 again. (Unless GTA Advance took place after 2000 I don't know and really it's just there)

I mean yes one might argue it gets rid of the Cellphone and the internet which it does depending on the time frame, but they could easily implement new features that could take place of these, like Payphones (go to a payphone and select the contact from a adress book) or CB radio's you could install to your car. (Perfect for a 70's GTA IMO since they got big in the 70's)

Do I see them going back to another time frame though? I don't know but I wouldn't count it out, hell I'd welcome it as much as I enjoyed IV's setting and as much as I like V's so far it's allways nice having a blast from the past. But this is just my humble opinion.

Q:Now that you have a three-character narrative, would you ever go back to a single protagonist?

A:I don't think this is something that we have to do in the future. I don't think it's the only interesting thing to do. It's something that we may well revisit, may well do with more characters or less characters, but I still think that there's a place for a single-character game. That may be a future GTA game. It may be a future game with another IP or not.

Straight from the Big Man's mouth, while doesn't shoot on the possibility of returning to a single protag formula he's clearly more interested in multiple characters, at least for the forseeable future.

Personally, I don't have anything against multiple protagonists in GTA, quite the opposite actually. 3 different characters to complement GTA's large and diverse gameworld sounds perfect to me.

I know what you mean, but the phone is the last thing I care for, it's more about creating a authentic movie-like feeling during the time period we live in. 80's and 90's served well for past GTA games, cause they were based upon movies from those times, but in my opinion, GTA shouldn't be doing that anymore, it should build it's own dimension, as GTA IV did, and V certainly will do..they don't need to live for movies anymore, since games are becoming an equally immersive way of entertainment.(even better than movies IMO)

true, though LA Noire's wasn't quiteeeeee for that reason. We play as the other guy before Cole is, well, yknow.

I agree with you about the female character. You may be right that they will "ease" people into it by having her in addition to a male character(s), or maybe a DLC added character to some game.

To rockstar's credit, you could play as a female in multiplayer in GTAIV, RDR, and MP3. In GTAIV and RDR in particular it was free roam, so at the most technical level, they have already given us the option to be a female in free roam.

Im still waiting for the GTA game where you're actually an undercover cop. Especially in Boston, or a Boston-Esque city...... But then again, I'm in Boston.

I'd like to see 2 protagonists, one's an undercover cop, the other is a huge criminal. it all ends with you choosing who you want to kill the other. That would be something.

That's entirely dependent on how well it will be received in GTA V.

The question is: Will the protagonists work together? Or will it be like in IV and EFLC were they were unknowingly affecting one another?

Well it adds a lot of replayability to the characters as well as the game. I don't see why they shouldn't mix it up a bit.
