cant r* use the Rage engine for the next-gen GTA?

i mean, since the next gen console aren't too far off this gens consoles, wont producing the next game engine be waaaaay more easier than it was when switching from PS2 to PS3/X Box to 360?

the new consoles arent that different, it just basically updated graphics using similar code isnt it, so R* can just update the Rage engine and plus add more capabilites that the current gen cant handle, this will mean the nesxt gta will be really similar to what we are getting at the moment, in terms of playing it similarly.

people get worried that after this generation it will be hard for r* to top V, but in reality, the next gen gta will be easier to create, and also be a much better game so i dont think we have nothing to worry about here.

correct me if i'm wrong...

They will use RAGE but with new stuff I don't know... I see RAGE today after so Many years and IV and it still blowing my mind

I think they'll be using the RAGEngine for quite some time, it will just be updated. Look at how long developers have been using the Unreal Engine 3.

I posted this somewhere else:

Back in Dec 2012, some news surfaced about R* developing a brand new engine for next-gen:

rockstar-hiring-for-new-tech

rockstar_developing_cuttingedge_engine_for_nextgen_platforms

If this is to be believed, then GTA history will most probably repeat itself, with a new engine forcing a scaled back world just like IV.

A bit of a shame really if they are making a new engine, RAGE hasn't had a chance to shine on the Xbox 360 or PS3, just look at Max Payne 3 on PC with maximum graphics to see what it can really do!

Thanks for posting these links, I've been looking for them for a while.

The thing is, none of those links mention they are looking for members with "next gen" knowledge to create a new engine, in fact I mentioned this many time and I think that this "urgent call" back in the end of 2012, was for coders to port GTA V for next Gen. It doesn't make sense to hire more people to start creating a new engine when their biggest investment that was delayed isn't even out.

I think this list of staff was to port the PC version of the game for the new gen consoles and not to create a new engine.

Software companies have this thing called employees aka staff.

Staff is limited and costs money, also it needs to be managed.

Game projects have deadlines and also cost money. Resources are limited.

New engine means redoing and tweaking the core game technology from the ground up. Requires time, staff and money.

Really, it's not about imagination.

They will make a new engine, and since next gen consoles are more similar to PC architecture, it will be easier to work on them and also to port games between them.

Why worry about it though?

They already have a team of coders working on the engine, those guys have nothing to do with V and are probably from a separate studio. And new engine will be built to properly use DX11 as well as any good stuff they already use like Euphoria.

The San Diego team created the RAGEngine. In fact, I'd say they are on a par with R* North in terms of talent.

Please send me the game because I would really love to play it suicidal.gif

Once RDR was released I jumped on board as well with R* San Diego. Very talented group of people. smile.gif

They are going to have to more or less re-engineer RAGE anyway. Current gen hardware uses a small number of highly clocked CPU cores. Both next gen machines use a larger number of cores (8) that, according to available information, are clocked lower. Overall power is up, but only if you leverage a more multi-threaded processing architecture in the game engine.

So it's quite possible that they'll have to pull RAGE apart and re-engineer it so that it scales properly on next gen hardware. Whether they give the resultant software a different name or continue to call it RAGE remains to be seen.

I've never played any of the Midnight Club games, mainly because pure racers are not my thing. So they weren't really on my radar either, until I experienced RDR. While IV was technically more challenging to develop, I'd say RDR is the most polished & beautiful open world game ever created. Obviously they share some of the work on every game they create & V will no doubt surpass RDR in almost every way.

Ahh but haven't they already done that? Compare GTA IV on PC to Max Payne 3, the new RAGE Build actually uses more CPU cores if they are available and can pump out A LOT more detail in less required performance. Rockstar went on about how much they tweaked RAGE and rebuilt it when they did Max Payne 3 to the point where it actually makes use of the platforms, the PS3 version wasn't running a crappy Xbox 360 port anymore and the PC version was like lightyears ahead of GTA IV/EFLC.

They'll keep evolving RAGE. They're not going to go back to licensing somebody else's engine.

RAGE 2.0 or something of that variety. Physics and AI will be the big advancements in this generation, and with the GPU now handling physics and muti-cores available for Ai the whole engine is going to need a redesign.

I think they'll keep it, but do a MAJOR overhaul. RAGES (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine the Second).

Probably just stick to RAGE or call it RAGE2. RAGES sounds stupid.

I hope they make a new engine or at least improve the physics.

Technically, we're on the third build:

First: Table Tennis

Second: Grand Theft Auto IV, EFLC, Midnight Club LA

Second Overhaul (2.5): Red Dead Redemption

Third: Max Payne 3, Grand Theft Auto V

So the Engine is in constantly development since the year 2000.

RAGE is just the front and graphics engine, the physics engine can be tweaked to use various different forms from Euphoria, to possibly basic standard Havok, etc.

They used to use the Bullet physics engine, which is open source. In fact Rockstar contributed a significant amount of work to Bullet. However, since then, the parts of the Bullet library they were using have been incorporated into RAGE itself.

Euphoria is not and never has been a physics engine. It's an animation engine. It's designed to be compatible with a number of commercial physics engines, including Bullet. So it doesn't even do its own physics.
