The thing is, GTA IV was amazing for it's time for openworld sanboxes. It was 10x better than san andreas in so many ways and had to be rated that high. For GTA V, it'll be more expected so to speak, hence a lower rating. I'll be amazed if it gets more than 98%

Kind of sad that critics just care about graphics, Last of Us getting 10/10? It's just some linear third person zombie game, I've seen gameplay and the only thing that looks impressive is the graphics. Uncharted was the same sh*t.

And GTA IV imo shouldn't have gotten such a high score, maybe a little bit lower because we all know it wasn't perfect.

This happens not because they only care about graphics but because good graphics can immerse you so well, there is nothing better then an immersive playthough.

GTA IV just plain wasn't as fun as San Andreas. There just wasn't much to do after the story was over.

A game being "more mature" doesn't excuse it being less fun.

I play games for enjoyment, and San Andreas was way more enjoyable than IV. I'll sacrifice some realism for that.

It's not a zombie game. If you're going to b!tch about a game at least do some research first. Most of you guys are open world fanboys. ( I am too ) but that doesn't mean there isn't great games besides that.

GTA 4 had good graphics for its time. Sadly for GTA V it releases at the time of the new consoles which will make its graphics look outdated resulting in a lower score..

God you ppl are idiots saying IV was bad. They focused on QUALITY for IV, instead of the number of side activities and sh*t. The graphics and physics are vastly improved from SA. IV was a more mature game, that's why so many immature idiots hate it.

f*ck off already, immature idiots? You're the immature here who can't accept the truth that IV was not superior to SA apart from graphics and physics. Oh please tell me, what is there to do after story line? Your opinion is flawed in so many ways. Side activities and sh*t is what makes a game AFTER the story you fool.

Haha, did I hit a soft spot there? And it's not a fact that SA was superior, that's your opinion. The point is, you can't have everything; IV sacrificed stupid minigames to focus on graphics and physics that were a huge step up from SA. I liked the storyline better in SA, but the graphics sucked, even for 2004. And for me, IV had more replayability because the physics were so excellent and the detail of the city was incredible. BTW, calling me a fool with no actual argument doesn't make you right.

Just because the gaming community has grown a lot since IV's release, and because IV was released closer to the beginning of this generation with less competition and things to compare it to, I don't think i will.

Where as games like Vice City, San Andreas, Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, and Halo, among only a few others, were the standouts as the best games last generation, this one has been different. In this generation, there have been sooo many great and memorable games. Gears of War, Halo 3, Infamous, MGS4, Skyrim, Uncharted 2, The Walking Dead, LoZ Skyward Sword, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Super Mario Galaxy, Red Dead Redemption...the list goes on and on.

As of now, I think V deserves a better rating than IV. It's much bigger in terms of both size and ambition. Its jumping over IV by leaps and bounds. But the community has gotten so much bigger, and there have been so many great, landmark games since the release of IV, that I don't think it will matter. It'll get bashed for "graphics not being on par with that of the rest of this generation, performance hiccups, too ambitious..." Blah blah blah blah BLAH. It'll all be bullsh*t, but IV set the bar so high that all eyes will be on V. And you're lying to yourselves if you don't think this games hype is higher than any other games has been close to lately. It just wont meet up with all the judgy gamers nowadays.

I believe it will do incredibly well on Metacritic. But will it do as well as it DESERVES and beat IV? Probably not. But I'd love to be wrong. Either way, I guarantee it'll be a 100/100 in my book.

I've always believed GTA IV got such high scores based on contemporary impression.

Hell I still remember the trolls that suggested that R* "bribed" these reviewers to give it a high score only because they were too ignorant to accept review scores are based on opinion.

I doubt GTA V will get such scores because it may be seen more of an evolution rather than a revolution. GTA IV pretty much rejuvenated every core mechanic from the GTA III era.

GTA V looks to be an improvement in every way, but it may not have that "Wow" factor a lot of these reviewers saw with GTA IV in 2008.

- Vigilante Missions (Most wanted missions as well)

- Taxi Fare

- Drug Delivery side missions for Jacob

- Exotic car export missions

- Races

- Assassination Missions

- Random Stranger missions

Yup, nothing to do at all.

It's an improved game from IV, to V, it should.

Not necessarily.

I wasn't meant to post yet: I was going to type what Miami did, or something similar, but he kinda saved me the effort and worded what I was trying to say.

Back in the days...when GTA IV needed 2% more to be the perfect game..

IV has never been even almost a perfect game for me.

I don't see how it could even get 98%. Doesn't sound very objective imo.

There's no way in hell they're going to be able to pull off another 98 on Metacritic, let alone surpass it. We've already had people complain about graphics in previews and the new three-character system will most definitely turn-off some people.

Indeed. I personally thought the random stranger missions were a neat addition.

Just to get back on topic, I think GTA V has a fair shot of scoring similar, if not, better than GTA IV. That is assuming all goes well with the new features and what not.

The Last of Us got a 96 so GTA V has a chance. If GTA IV got a 98 and GTA V is better than GTA IV, it will at least get 97.

Gamespot f*cked it up, man. They took off 2 points for some insanely stupid sh*t. Hate reviewers like that who cut down a game's rating a bit just to be different.

The character switch mechanic seems pretty revolutionary to me. I'm not aware of any game that has pulled off the ability to switch between protagonists at will during both missions and open world free roam. Also, the heist/crew system seems very fresh as well. I think V has a chance to match IV's "wow factor" on these features alone.

And come on, what other open world has ever let you explore the depths of the ocean in a submarine? mercie_blink.gif

I actually like when a review decides to stand out like that. Someone didn't want to suck the game's dick and suddenly the internet explodes. I love it.

I didn't mean it wont be revolutionary at all Dick. Arguably it was GTA IV/EFLC giving 3 protagonists with 3 different perspectives that laid the foundation for the multiple protagonist mechanic. GTA V is just implementing it differently.

By "wow"factor I mean back in 2008 GTA IV represented a level not quite seen in the series before. Niko was/is the most multi layered protagonist to date and LC completely crushed every city before in terms of detail and a more believable environment.

We've seen what R* can do with RDR and MP3 and GTA V seems to be a culmination of everything, but GTA IV made it all possible with its impressive ground work. That's why I think it may not get quite the same impression as GTA IV did for its time.

GTA IV forged the path for GTA V to follow. smile.gif

GTA V will definitely be better than IV but will they give it a review score to reflect this? I don't know. I think IV scored way too high. They need to give V a higher score. It would be stupid to give it a lower score and essentially say that IV>V.

"If" it scores lower I'd imagine this place will be full of "why did it score lower than GTA IV?" threads and I'll sit back in my chair twiddling my fingers with a Mr Burns "excellent" in my mind because I'm a c*nt. tounge.gif

Man...it's gonna be REALLY tough just because of how high 98% is. I like the original poster's likely interval, 95 to 97.

As an informed fan of the series, I personally know this game will be "better" than gta iv and "deserve" a higher score (not IV bashing, loved that game too) but I think it will be VERY hard to get so close to 100%, especially as reviewers' expectations for these games gets higher. Because honestly, a lot about a review score comes from blowing people's expectations.

That's why so many of those games on that list are games that we look back as kinda revolutionary. They did something very unexpected or unseen in the past. I think GTA V will have to outdo GTA IV by a lot to get 98 or higher, and that gets more and more difficult as rockstar continues to release games like gta iv and rdr that keep raising the bar on themselves.

I hope reviews can temper their expectations, and I hope rockstar delivers another masterpiece.

GTA IV did not deserve the praise and reviews it got. IMO a 9/10 would be a better score. Better than GTA III/Vice City/San Andreas? Please.

We can't assume it will even be close to that score, we have to put this into perspective. Back in 2008, it was an entirely new experience, on a new console with updated graphics, and the first HD GTA game. Everybody, even IGN went crazy over how good it was back then, just watch/read IV's reviews and you'll see what I mean. Now we have the release of next generation consoles and with it new visually-orgasmic games, right around the corner. Games, reviewers will have undoubtely seen, maybe even played. Rendering IV immediatly sub-par, graphics wise at least. Resulting in a lot of reviewers (IGN included) giving it -1, i.e an immediate 9, or lower depending on what else they find that they can and will put under a microscope. Sure some reviewers like CVG wil rate it a 10/10 but how many will do so, remains to be seen. As of now I don't consider it outside the realm of possiblities that GTA V will score lower than 9 on metacritic. Unjustly so.
