Windows 8, Patching and others

ok I purchased the retail version of the game on Amazon.

When I install it, it is on version 1.0.0.0. I have to use Compatibility Mode for Vista Service Pack 1 to get it to even install.

Now I cannot get this game to play on any of the official patches. At all. Nothing.

Now I have found one Razr 1911 file that got the game working on Windows 8 but it was for version 1.0.3. My end goal is the ENB Mod which is best suited for 1.0.4 from what I read.

I have tried looking/installing the 1.0.4 files the same way that 1.0.3 was but when it is upgraded it does not play.

When I install the official patches I still get nothing. I have spoken to Rockstar about this and I am not getting really anywhere with them. I have a retail copy as I said, and would prefer to keep it patched and working through Rockstar but open to suggestions.

Thanks guy in advance

GTAIV's latest patch is 1.0.7.0, also:

Please include the following information when describing your issue:

  • Where exactly in the game you experienced the issue (start screen, while playing the game, etc.)
  • What version of the game you have (retail, steam, other online store)
  • What is your OS
  • Benchmark info or DxDiag is also helpful

Uninstall the game. Delete Grand Theft Auto IV folder from Program Files. Re-install the game. Download and install the latest patch 1.0.7.0. Run the game as administrator in Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista SP1 mode. If it doesn't work also install the latest GFWL.

CCPD, as I mentioned in my title and second post, this is a downloadable version of GTA 4 purchased from Amazon.

The computer while it processes spins the blue mouse icon to show the program is thinking, then it stops because GTA 4 wont load.

Have you tried to install the Games for Windows Live Update & the .NET Framework 3.5? Besides, maybe you could make use of the Rockstar Games Social Club Update. Besides, are you at this moment trying to run the cracked version? Or did you install any mods by now? Have you also tried running the game in Windows 98 / Windows 2000 Compatibility mode or any other Compatibility mode? What about running it as administrator?

Thanks for the reply.

While contacting Rockstar they have included updates for all of the Live Updates and Social Clubs. The .NET Framework 3.5 is enabled on my Windows 8 Machine.

I am not trying to run a crack to the game at this moment as I would like to run it without if possible. I did try the 1.0.3 and it did work but as I said the 1.0.4 did not.

No MODS

When I install it, it must be installed through compatibility mode through Vista. It will not download through XP.

I have tried running it through administrator as well.

Download Games for Windows Live from here and then Right Click the downloaded file and choose programs. Put a tick in Windows 7 Compatibility and Run as adminstrator. That will get GFWL working and bring up overlay in-game.

  • Delete all previous installations of GFWL and clean the registry (CCleaner is a good program to do it).

  • Download gfwlivesetupmin.exe (28 Mb), from here.

  • Install the client and run it. It will ask you to download an update (624 Kb) called gfwlivesetup.exe by clicking the requested link. Install it.

  • Launch GFWLive.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client.

  • Launch the game and create or sign into an account and play.
Also enable Microsoft Update in Windows 8 and update the OS. If LIVE asks for update go here and download the setup file manually. Set Windows 7 compatibility mode and launch it.

Well after all of those suggestions, still could not play the game without a crack. I dont understand why it should be this hard and have to have so many workarounds. Obviously there are issues with compatibility with all of the garbage Windows is pushing out and Rockstar being unresponsive to the needs of the unfortunate Windows 8 users. Guess I will try and get into GTA 5 earlier in the life cycle if it actually even comes to PC. Thanks to all for the help.

Guess I need to find some mods for the 1.0.3 version!

Many people experienced problems with downloadable games from Amazon. Maybe you were one of those unlucky ones.
