Mos Def, Lupe, and Kendrick Lamar are respectable rappers. I'm not a big fan of Dead Prez, but from what I've heard they are borderline racist, so there's that. TI is questionable, he was arrested for having a full arsenal of weapons in his home. Boosie is a joke, ASAP is good but heavily relies on other people to do his production, he is not better than Tyler in my opinion. Kanye West and Common are great rappers, that's for sure. Blu? Ehh, I listened to The Piece Talks, it was... alright. Tyler The Creator has come up largely on his own, producing ALL his own tracks. He has his own label, merchandise, and successful shops selling his merchandise all around the world. Tyler may not be the best lyrically or have the best beats, but he works hard and is successful for good reasons. He makes music he wants to hear and has not given into a mainstream sound. He's real and that's far from being "wack". His success also shows shows he's far from a "joke". His album debut album Goblin was number 1 on the rap charts here in the US and his second album Wolf, released on his own label, also topped the rap charts, doesn't seem like a joke to me. But hey, each to his own.

The question is does "mainstream" necessarily means bad ? I think people confuse commercial\politically correct rap with mainstream rap.... People often think "It's on the radio oh that's Bullsh*t...." There is Some good hip-hop on the radio just you just need to find the good station

There is some mainstream like Kendrick that is great, it goes against what certain rappers are saying, Lil wayne was once a great mainstream rapper, now he talks about pussy money & weed, popping molly (Molly isn't that great trust me, pharmacy major here who has tried it & knows the pharmacology behind the MDMA & other substances in it), etc... Tyler is no where near mainstream, He has had one song on the radio the whole time he has been out. Yonkers gained a huge following on Youtube which skyrocketed his career, but mainstream is based on radio play.

 

Tyler even stated himself that his new song IFHY just now was put on radio because it was "lyrically okay" for radio play. That's his 1st major song on radio, look at plies, mike jones & yung joc, rappers that got radio play who were once mainstream, and are now no longer relevant rappers, a couple of songs makes you mainstream, not just one song.

If people want to debate about "bad rap music" being on radio stations in GTA games, look at the GTAIV Rap station "The Beat 102.7" (I have a huge variety of music choice, i listen to everything from Tyler the Creator to Eric Church to Killswitch Engage, Bassnectar and back, so metal, rock, hip hop, rap, country, dubstep etc...)

 

A song by Fat Joe & Lil Wayne called "The Crackhouse", now fat joe was okay back in the day, but he has faded away, this song is awful, trust me i listen to a varaity of rap from your hard hitting southren rap beats to the upstate new york lyricalness from NAS & Jay Z, or the greatess from Chicago Kanye West, or the one of a kind sound from Kid Cudi in Cleveland. How about The Game from LA or Kendrick, Ab-soul, all these guys that are of the new generation taking over from the west coast of rap.

 

Yes these games have good raps songs from artists like Papoose & Red Cafe who are all "underground" rappers (Underground here meaning they do not get alot of mainstream radio play & record sales), but there are the awful artists in these stations that i do not see people bitching about right now. Tyler the Creator is a great artist, & his group Odd Future are huge GTA fans (Check Tylers twitter, i follow him, he talks about how much he loves GTAIV & Max payne and how he cannot wait for GTAV to come out), so i wouldn't doubt that rockstar would include his music, its Odd, they branch out on music in these games heavily. It adds extra flavor to the game that makes it 10x better. That's why they added tracks that fit with the genre of TBOGT & TLAD like highway star by deep purple (This song always stood out to me as one of the songs that really fit for TLAD), so they want to branch out & improve likability & the realness of the game. An Aspiring group from LA such as Odd Future who love the GTA series & rockstar games, in a game about LA & the greater SOCAL area, yeah they will be in there, count on it.

 

Just because everyone here isn't 16 & listens to Justin Bieber, One Direction or Selena Gomez or whatever else these "hipsters" listen to now, people have to disagree with it.

Flying Lotus and/or his label/crew/whatever, also good candidate. Black Hippy crew as well. I prefer either over Tyler, musically but that's cool.

 

Danny Brown has also been talking about being involved with Rockstar. I think on a mtv interview somewhere last year. He's from Detroit so that doesn't make a lot of sense but he's Danny Brown, it doesn't have to make sense. He's like a Rockstar character in real life, so..
