Scripted events vs. embarrassing AI moments

  1. 1. Which do you like more?

    • Scripted sequences that have cool movie-like moments, such as falling structures and close shave train crossings etc.

    • Everything is running on pure AI. There might or might not be "cool" moments.

In previous GTAs, we've always had chases that have pre-determined length and usually include some scripted obstacles such as big trucks emerging behind corners etc. Do you prefer these over 100% AI chases where anything can happen, including something stupid, like AI hitting a wall and getting stuck?

I have always hated scripted sequences. Immersion breakers, that's what they are. They also limit my freedom, which GTA is all about.

Rockstar is f*cking stupid, it lacks in the God damn AI department a lot, the only reason sometimes I do NOT enjoy their GTA games is because of their lack of AI, come on Rockstar, improve your f*cking AI.

You need some of what your Username Suggests. But I'd re frame from calling Rockstar Stupid.. Considering how successful they are.

I liked it the old way, the new method is extremely easier to get the hang of once you replayed the damn story 56000000000000000000000 times the last 5 years.

I'll get my share of HappYness in August. wink.gif, it doesn't matter if Rockstar are successful or not, they're still stupid for not improving their AI in their past games. They're lacking in that department. Oh well, I am just voicing my OPINION about them, they're not the kings of the gaming industry.

I'm sure there will be some scripted events in some missions (if not most or even all missions), which isn't a bad thing if you ask me. Like a big truck suddenly blocking your way, so you have to quickly leave the road and go cross country or something like that... So I prefer scripted events, otherwise missions can be boring, easy and uneventful smile.gif

There are scripted events in IV, just not many variations, so once we have seen some one getting the shopping from the boot (trunk is usa?), under their bonnet (hood lol?) fixing their car.. or being chased by a fat cop... you have seen it all and it gets a bit boring/same-y.

What scripted events were in GTA 4? I didn't get to finish it so can someone tell me please?

Lacking? Far from it, the AI in IV was actually very good. The only thing they really sucked at was driving, but I have still yet to see a developer creating a decent, unscripted driving AI in a sandbox game.

As for unscripted missions, that will never happen. They are necessary in a sandbox game. In my opinion, they should be since I absolutely HATE the randomness that gets in the way of completing a mission.

AI moments make the game so much more impressive and immersive. Scripted events are usually so easy to spot and generally ruin sandbox games for me.

Dynamic AI. Even if that means it's stupid.

Scripted chases sucked in all 3 IV episodes. You couldn't wreck the other guy, his car is infinitely massive so he can plow through a truck but your car is still normal. It makes no sense. I should be able to end the chase early by spinning the guy out or even just let him crash into a wall. Sandboxes aren't supposed to be that scripted anyways. Even when on a mission. You should be able to complete it however you want. That's why this is a sandbox game and not a linear one.

But just imagine that the guy you are following back to some place gets hit by a random truck and explodes and you fail the mission after trying to complete it for 20 minutes.

In all honesty, I'd hate to see this. The traffic around the players should be scripted, but there should definitely be MORE ways of beating each mission.

but I have still yet to see a developer creating a decent, unscripted driving AI in a sandbox game.

Then you must have not played many games.

There are a lot of games with reasonable driving AI.

Midnight Club (even MC2 released in 2003)

Just Cause 2 had better AI than IV.

NFS games

Infact, pretty much every street racing open world game.

Myself, until R* can make racing AI that I can't take down in 3 seconds, I'd take scripted any day.

Well, maybe the guy you're escorting could just be in the car you drive.

Sometimes, more realism is better. I might not like fuel or traffic laws, but I do like how random sandbox games can be.

Besides, don't you guys like challenge? It's not any less frustrating when you spin out and die.

AI has limits. Take for example, a mission in GTA: SA ("Just Business") where you and smoke are being chased by some guys. A bus emerges behind you (scripted) and stops the guys chasing you, then CJ says 'Owwww, they hit a bus!' and Big Smoke says "I won't ever dis public transportation again" (or something similar).

It's not possible for THAT to be AI, because the voices have to be recorded, and if there were no voices, I think that would be even more of an 'immersion breaker' - don't you?

Another scripted part of that mission is a reference to Terminator 2, where the truck falls down in to the Los Angeles River overflow thing (I'm sure you know what I mean). This obviously has to be scripted - and the part where they get hit by a bus leads up to this, because if the truck was still following you it wouldn't be able to be in place to fall down.

In short; scripted scenes are necessary to create a cinematic game. It would be pretty boring without them. GTA is about insane sh*t.

(P.S. Can someone tell me how to embed YT videos on this forum :x)

There has to be some scripted sequences until there's some kind of crazy advanced AI, and even then, there must be scripted sequences to make for some interesting movie moments.

Yes, AI doing it's thing is random and can surprise you, but some structure is needed. A lot of missions you could never have with just AI.

I like a challenge, but I also hate failing it repeatedly and getting annoyed at the game. That's where the -alternate and hidden ways of completing each mission- should come in.

I think it's just as satisfying to finish a mission in a way that you discovered. It's creativity, that's what a sandbox game should be about.

I dunno, I liked most of the scripted car chases in IV, like that mission for Phil Bell where all the cops are chasing you in those drug-filled cars, and trucks are t-boning cop cars, buses completely wiping them out while you had to dodge and maneuver your way around to avoid the same., and that one for Bernie where Dimitri's goons wipe out a cop car in the tunnel.

I deliberately let all the scripted chases play out in one playthrough until the car suddenly drops speed, just to see the cool stuff.

I remember there is a car chase mission on the second island where a truck spills large pipes in front of you. Niko has to chase that McClaren-ish sports car.

The scripted moments wouldn't be so bad in GTA, if you weren't forced to see the whole thing from beginning to end no matter what you do. I could live with scripted chases if they would allow you to destroy/ram the escaping car at will. Cinematic effects could still be implemented by triggers. I hope they get rid of the indestructible cars + rubber band turbo for V.

But still, random mayhem for me please! icon14.gif

I think a combination of scripted and random is best. You can still have the cool sh*t happen that way, but crazy unexpected sh*t can still happen too.

OT i've put pure AI, but it can be dissapointing at times. I hate the scripted events, there's just no point. The whole point on a game is playing it yourself and affecting the outcome of things yourself.
