Technically, all Americans would have originated in Africa. I don't see why only the black people have to have that little caveat before their nationality. Why can't a guy who was born in America, and whose parents and grandparents were born in America, just be called an American? Do they not qualify as 'proper' Americans?

 

How does a guy who has never been to Africa, has no family members who have ever been to Africa, has no cultural or ethnic link to Africa, get called 'African' American? and yet white people don't get that label?

 

Where is the cut-off point where you are allowed to be just American? Is it that you great great grandparents need to be born there? Or perhaps it's your great great great grandparents? But if that's the case, then still many white people who call themselves regular good old 'American as apple pie' Americans probably wouldn't qualify as proper Americans either.

 

I know... Perhaps it works on a colour spectrum, like those swatches you get when choosing paint? But what shade is the cut-off point? Somewhere between taupe and burnt umber? Or perhaps a little lighter? caramel maybe?

 

But then what if one of those good old regular Americans gets a sun-tan and crosses the caramel colour gradient, does he then become African too?

As for your comment about African-Americans ? Unlike many other Americans, who can trace their ancestry as individuals to other countries outside of the USA, most African-Americans have not been able to do that, and for many years up until that few decades, they have been given derogatory names by non-blacks like "Negro", not too mention the more potent n*gger and all sorts of other slurs. To be called just Black is fine, but that just denotes a race of people, not their whole history and culture. Bear in mind Blacks in America for many, many years have been conditioned to believe that their history started with slavery, which of course is not true.

 

Many black people in America have a desire to connect with something that represents their heritage as whole, not just the something associated with their immediate slave history in the South. From that desire, comes the the term African-American which is basically a reaffirmation of Black's biological and cultural ties to Africa.

 

That is my take on it.
