I bet group play is coming back to GTA?

Back when GTA III came out, my friends and I played that game for hours. We'd pass the controller anytime someone died, or completed a mission (depending on if the person free-ran for mayhem or did a mission for progress).

 

GTA IV, you can't really do that. I always felt more like I was demoing or being demo'd stuff in GTA IV when playing in groups. III, VC, and SA were awesome just to spawn, do some crazy stuff, get exhilerated, and pass the controller. IV, not so much at all. It was incredible, it still is the most advanced "all around" game you can play (at least til V releases), but it really lacked the ability to have fun with groups.

 

I am hoping V will bring this back, and one thing that makes me optimistic about that is the player switching - can you have meaningful sessions of playthroughs with friends, where each person plays as a certain character? I do a Franklin mission, and you do a Michael mission, and we share in the trevor missions if there's only 2 of us?

 

What are some things we know so far that make group and party play possible again, like the III era could support?

Nah.

But in SA they had a 2 player coop option.

 

Don't think it's gonna happen though. Only online.

I know what you mean. Back in days of the older GTA games, me and my friends would just play for a long while, passing the controller when someone died. In GTA IV, the feeling of tat wasn't really there. And not just with GTA, but games like RDR, MP3, and L.A Noire didn't have that. It just went away. The only game I can think of that is still worth group-play is Saints Row.

It was a different time then... before online MP became the norm for console players. In their heyday, f*cking around in III, VC, and especially SA was all there was to do when gaming at a friend's house (like Golden Eye back in the N64 days). IV came out when there were more alternatives, like splitscreen CoD, or just CoD or IV MP in general... which allowed you and your buddies to play together in bigger groups, at the same time, and not even have to be in the same house! Obviously this would become more popular than swapping controllers and watching your friend rampage, especially when you'd already done that for years.

 

Personally, I still find it enjoyable to rampage in IV with friends like in the old days (especially TBOGT), but now you can do that in IV MP and, in any case, we're older and less patient now. Has absolutely nothing to do with the quality or approach of the game. Gaming, and the technology, have changed.

Playing 'group play' or in my case 'duo play' (sh*t that sounds wrong) was what got me into gta iii

 

Now, gta is a personal joy. I can't play it in groups. Too much waiting and too much boredom. Instead of waiting, you can BOTH play together online . Wow!
