Will the fighting just be an upgrade of IV?

I haven't heard anything on the fighting system yet. I'm guessing they didn't fight in the demos since none of the previews spoke on it. If something about it has been mentioned please direct me to it. Anyway, in the trailers I saw a few new animations for punches but in Trevor's trailer when he stomped the guy and those other two guys were fighting at that store it looked the same as IV. I know we didn't get to see much but what I did see looked the same. Its kinda hard to imagine they really didn't touch on this that much after 5 years. I'm hoping they DID add more depth and this is one of the things they are keeping hidden. What do you guys think? Will it be the same as IV except more polished or do you think they will surprise us with a more in depth system? I personally would be satisfied with something like this.

user posted image

* Left trigger - Lock onto the enemy you want to attack.

* Left bumper - Turns normal strikes into special strikes. Special strikes must be learned from a gym.

* Right trigger - Block/couner like IV. You can also counter enemies you're not locked on to.

* Right bumper - Tap RB to grab the enemy. From here you can strike with the buttons, hold RB to slam or throw the enemy or take your enemies near environmental objects (bar counters, walls, windows, car doors, etc.) then hold RB to slam your enemies into them. When the enemy is on the ground you tap RB to pick them up or hold RB to sit on top of them and of course from there you can pound them out.

* Left stick - Tap LS in any direction to dash. Hold LS in any direction to move.

* D-pad - Up or down to taunt (left and right will remain for switching weapons of course)

* X - Quick left punch (ex. jab). Hold the left stick forward and press X for a strong left punch (ex. hook).

* Y - Quick right punch (ex. cross). Hold the left stick forward and press Y for a strong right punch (ex. haymaker).

* A - Quick left kick (ex. push kick to the stomach). Hold the left stick forward and press A for a strong left kick (ex. side kick to the stomach).

* B - Quick right kick (ex. kick to the balls like IV devil.gif ). Hold the left stick forward and press B for a strong right kick (ex. head kick).

* Right stick - Switch between enemies.

These will only be the commands when you are locked onto the enemy and not armed (the fist on the weapon wheel). As you can see this scheme is based on the controls in IV so nothing else is interfered with. Commands like entering vehicles, hiding behind cover, etc. were replaced with fighting commands but again only when you are locked onto someone and unamred. You wont need those commands during a fight so this shouldn't be a problem. When you want to use those commands then simply unlock from the enemy.

The strikes wont be exactly as suggested above for all characters though. They will be different for each fighter for example Franklin could have the boxing aspect (jabs, crosses, etc) but not the head kicks while Trevor wont thow jabs. He'll throw nothing but wild haymakers. Regardless, like this we'll have more control over the strikes and get to put together the combos manually. I think this is still simple and in the realm of possibility since it coincides with the old controls. Surely after 5 years they should be somewhere close to this or better as far as fighting right? Only time will tell. Until I hear more about the game or actually play it I'll keep hope they did in fact upgraded the combat system along with the other two aspects they upgraded (driving and shooting). Thoughts?

Not a bad system, it would have to be unique for each character though. But I understand where you're coming from when you talk about combat controls.. This would make sense.

Way too complicated for me!  cry.gif

How? The core is basically the same as IV. You lock on, strike and switch enemies with the same buttons. The only difference is you block with the right trigger instead of A and grab, special move and taunt commands are added in which are extras and you do not need to use them to fight. I think you would be able to pick this up real quick.

Ever watch the matrix?

Excluding the superpowers, that's the combat I want. Except maybe with some fatalities involving broken bones as well. Maybe I would actually use melle sometimes then. Although, the psychic cops that could detect knockouts ANYWHERE certainly didn't encourage me to use melee. Cage fighting wouldn't be bad if it wasn't for them letting in a baseball bat guy in the third level that I never win against because he's got a f*ckin' baseball bat and I've got a guy who can't disarm a small kitten.

Well the intention of this designed is to keep the main controls simple and similar to IV so its not asking for too much of R* but still add depth so I think that level of combat is still possible with this system. What I mean is the strikes are seperate which means a bigger combo list and with the addition of the special move button you would be able to learn the characters even more moves on top of those. So besides the 8 default strikes (X, Y, A or B and --> + X, Y, A, or B) you can have up to 8 additional special moves which would bring the total of possible strikes to 16. Add the grab button to the mix and I think V would be able to top Sleep Dogs in the mele combat department.

Thanks and I agree. This is just the system in full. I would expect each character to be limited to specific strikes. Like Franklin being more of a boxer so he wont have head kicks and Trevor being more of a wild brawler so he wont have jabs or long combos. If you want more depth in their strikes then you would have to build their arsenal manually. In V they will start of with default stats and we'll have to build them manully. This could be handled the same.

Gta IV's combat wasn't that bad, I think most people still haven't figured out you can dodge right before The enemy hits and do a fatality (kinda) but yeah it's still no sleeping dogs

Your system sounds great, but I remember Houser said in an interview that the Melee wasn't that a priority, I think it was in the GI preview

Hope fighting system will.

At first glance, I thought this would have been way too complicated. But after reading the entire post, I think you should work for Rockstar. That is a surprisingly brilliant idea for a fighting system. I really hope they did something along the lines of what you have proposed, because (in my opinion) it would add a whole new layer of depth to a game that's already looking to be miles deep in terms of content.

I am probably in the minority when I say that I highly enjoyed IVs fighting mechanics. It was a major step up from the III era of games, and the Euphoria animation really shined through. I was also really excited when they added an underground Fight Club in TBoGT. But, after 5 years, the fighting in GTA IV has not aged well. It is too repetitive. It would be a shame if this aspect of the game got overlooked, because beating up pedestrians is one of my favorite pass-times.

Just as long as it's not like Red Dead Redemption's sh*tty sh*tty Melee combat I will be okay with it.

Great game, but GODDAMN fist fighting sucked ass in it.

Where did he say that?

I wouldn't want anything like sleeping dogs' combat... I want an evolved combat system from IV. I actually liked the IV system, it felt more realistic I can't put my finger on it. RDR sucked though.

Well, that's just sad confused.gif

@OP: Totally agree. I don't think R* will even bother to improve the fighting because no one is really pressing them to. No one realizing that the fighting sucks and is anything but realistic. Best fighting feature of IV was the stun punch, and that was for one mission only.

I just really want some brutal, fast, relentless sh*t. Fighting in IV was too slow and calculated.

I hope the ability to push people like in IV returns. I had a blast pushing people down stairs, off cliffs, in front of trains, and aggravating people so they would follow me up a tall ladder so I could push them off whatever we were climbing. Good times.

They should just improve from IV. I like the Fighting in IV. The only thing I disliked was that Niko Punched way too slow. Judging by Trevor's trailer it seems that's fixed.

Leafy Hollow

I hope they make it more fluid, add more depth, have better timing, have better contact, better visual damage, more catch phrases, and also add a lot of hand to hand executions (CQC type).

One thing I hated as well was the kicks. They would just bounce off people, despite the fact we can all kick harder than we can punch.

Assuming you have legs.

I think we've gotten our first glimpse of the melee fighting in the second trailer, when we see the two guys fighting outside of the bar. It looks a lot better and faster than GTA IV, it looks very similar to RDR actually and that was.....it was alright. Dan Houser did say they would come with a more fun melee system, but it wouldn't be a drastic change, GTA is and will always be about shooting and driving, something along those lines is what he said. We haven't really seen any of the characters fighting yet, except for Trevor smacking a dude's head in the second trailer and a driver in his own trailer but that's about it. I still hope we'll get some real new moves for all characters though. That move in trailer 2 where Trevor bashes the guys head against a wall or counter...whatever it is..environmental kills, THAT would be sweet. Hopefully that wasn't a cutscene.

Why not do something similar from gta san andreass? Boxing, kick boxing etc maybe not learn it in the gym but you can go learn it somewhere?

There will now be free flowing fighting system! Can't wait to do something similar to kickboxing or smashing a guys head off the wall or something!

Lock n' Stock

I just hope it's better than IV's. It wasn't that bad but fighting two people at once was quite difficult. V's fighting system needs to be faster and smoother.

we dont have to lock onto enemy when fighting, it was confirmed few days ago wink.gif

Yea. I heard once that they only improved it slightly from GTA 4. But then from CVG nearly two weeks ago, they said that Rockstar are overhauling the combat.
