I agree with you that if someone but their mind to it they can accomplish getting out of the ghetto, but it takes an extremely strong willed person to do that.

 

The peer pressure is overwhelming in the ghettos to get into a gang, because if you're not you have no respect (bigger target and get treated like a bitch), you have no one watching your back in a warzone, and there's the money, it's a quick way to get rich and much more dangerous way, than having a life outside the ghetto. This looks very lucrative to a highschool dropout. Also, being well educated is frowned upon in the ghetto and makes you more of a target. Drugs use is also widespread (and very encouraged) in the ghetto, and even further hinders the chance of one at succeeding in school. And the chances of being a professional athlete or musician is a slim to nothing chance for the average kid in the ghetto.

You want to know why? Let me try to explain. It all began with two gangs that were friends. Some day, two men of opposing gangs were fighting (nothing serieus), then some guy kills one of the two fighting men, thinking he's protecting his fellow gangmember. The two gangs are now rivals, Gangmembers who were close to the deceased want revenge, the opposition wants to protect the shooter. People get killed. The situation between the two gets tense to the point where opposite gangs can't walk on the same curb without guns being pointed. This is where the true cause fades away. Some members of the gang of the original shooter go after the guys that tried avenging the original death, but not because of the original killing, they want to avenge their friends who died during the second attack. The original killing doesn't even matter to them anymore. As they attack the other gang, for some of them it's also not "those guys who killed an innocent man accidentally", but now it's "those guys who killed my buddy". This is how it changes from a valid cause to countless acts of revenge that become so unclear that you lose the vision of who the enemy is. Now, it's just "those guys in red clothes killed men from my gang for unclear reasons, we need to retaliate".

TL;DR valid cause escalated into countless acts of revenge, not random killings without a cause. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm a young white hillbilly from an unincorporated hick town out in the boonies of West Virginia. I don't have any gang responsibilities. No peer pressure. No drive bys wasting any friends of mine. None of that sh*t. And I STILL wanted better things. So I got into possibly the best college in the state. Marshall University. I completed my first year. But I STILL feel trapped in this state. I want to move to San Francisco one day. But you know what? It's NOT easy. Improving your life is one of the hardest things you can do. To be a success takes a massive undertaking, a near-impossible endeavor in which you give up almost everything that's near and dear to you simply for the CHANCE that sh*t might improve. To be a failure though? All you have to do is absolutely nothing. But yeah, you won't improve your life by putting out a little bit of effort here and there. Now picture somebody from some sh*thole hood where people kill each other over the stupidest most meaningless sh*t you can imagine. And as much as they would like to leave, they have friends to keep alive and family to provide for. Now imagine THAT poor bastard trying to make something of himself.

 

Hell, San Andreas actually DID have somebody like that. You remember who, right? Let me give you a hint. OG Loc.
