Heres my deal, my specs are:

ASUS Maximus IV Gene z/gen 3

Intel i7 2600k @3.40Ghz

8GB of Kingston hyperx RAM

GTX 560 1GB GDDR5

When benchmarking i get this:

Average FPS: 60.75

Duration: 37.13 sec

CPU Usage: 64%

System memory usage: 33%

Video memory usage: 100%

Graphics Settings

Video Mode: 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz)

Texture Quality: High

Shadow Quality: Very High

Reflection Resolution: Very High

Water Quality: High

Texture Filter Quality: Anisotropic x16

Night Shadows: High

View Distance: 50

Detail Distance: 100

But while playing, using Fraps my fps goes around 30, often even dropping to 20...If i put shadow quality to High i can get +5 fps...

Yea i know gta iv is just a bad port and its never going to run smooth, but really? is it possible that its this bad?

And is there anyone playing on similar rig? What's yours experience?

Yes, it is possible that it's that bad. The benchmark is completely useless, and on my end ([email protected], GTX680) it drops to 20's as well when using max settings on populated areas when raining and exploding things, it's just the way it is, just dial down your settings a little bit (especially the sliders and night shadows), and try to raise your minimum fps to 40 or something like that.

you using fraps, thats almost like using a mod for the game. very unpredictable, in my opinion. ask around the net for guys that are recording gta iv successfully

He's using fraps to measure framerate, not to record, so his performance should be intact.

There is a some rules and programs if you want smooth gameplay from this poorly optimazed game:

Update the games to the last patch 1.0.7.0 IV and 1.1.2.0 EFLC

Read about memrestrict command from Here.

Clean up your windows registry.

Programs that you must have:

Updated GFWL (Games for windows Live).

Net Framework 4.5.

Microsoft visual C++ 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012 (You must install all of them!!!)

Updated DirectX.

You can find them easy from Google.

If you do all this things, I'm sure that you'll get the smooth gameplay.

Turn off ingame Syns; lower Reflection Resolution to High; Detail distance (50-60) and Shadow quality - High, also lower a bit Video Mode.
