Yeaaaaah. This isn't a next gen game. Stop wishing it was. Its a new GTA game for christ's sakes, not everyone is going to go out and buy a new console right off the bat. Hell, I didnt get a ps3 til 3 years into it's lifespan, Rockstar releasing on PS3 and 360 is the best option they have. Anyone who doesnt agree doesn't know basic economics.

More like an unintentional point. R* gets acquainted with the tech of a console to perfectionalise the final game. You'll see that GTA V will be a better game than all next-gen launch titles. Just like back when PS3/X360 were released, the early games looked like PS2 games with slightly better graphics, the good PS2 titles were still way better than the next-gen titles. This time around next-gen titles seem to be even worse. Look at Watch_Dogs, it looks identical (graphically) to AC3. GTA V will exceed the first wave of next-gen titles, that's their ace.

Nah thats not true. It won't cost a lot to port it to the next gen consoles and doing so will mean the game has a life beyond the next 18 months as people swap over to the new systems.

Doesn't matter if it doesn't costs a lot to port the game, package it, put it on disk, ship to retailers and all that jazz. Time, money, resources and effort could be spent elsewhere. GTA V will have a life for years to come regardless of next gen just like San Andreas. San Andreas never was ported to PS3 or 360. I'd rather R* first next gen game to be something completely new as I said.

You don't know how games studios are managed. Rockstar North (and other Rockstar studios for that matter) are fully focussed and geared into GTA V right now and all the tech surrounding it. Porting it over when all the team are that focussed on it makes absolute sense on every level. Its not a case of 'Time, money, resources and effort could be spent elsewhere' What else where? The gestation period of any GTA is a long drawn out process before it goes into full production. For very obvious reasons they won't just start on another GTA a few months after V comes out. Dan Houser has himself already said he finds the idea of doing another GTA right now 'awful' (or words to that effect, see the Game Informer article) The studio will get as much as it can out of GTA V in the months after release, with support patches, DLC and yes a next gen version. Its the coders that have to most of the work on a next gen port and its easy to give them something to do which gives the game a much longer life span and of course importantly helps Rockstar recoup its budget.

Your second point isn't applicable. San Andreas had no multiplayer to support and basically had free reign as the biggest AAA title around for a good 18 months to 2 years after release. GTA V does not have that luxury. It will have to compete with not only a lot of other great AAA titles currently around but also the big AAA titles that look increasingly like they will be around when the next gen consoles launch (certainly the PS4 anyway) Its all about keeping people playing the game and keeping the massively invested in multiplayer fully stocked with players for years to come and thats not going to be easy if there's not a next gen port.

You gotta think, GTA V has to be a HUGE investment for Rockstar. It's been in development for at least 4-5 years now. They have a lot riding on it. From a business stand point it would make a lot of sense to release an enhanced next gen port and market the hell out of any additional content and improvements it may have. The amount of money, time and resources put into GTA V has raised the bar in the industry. I think Rockstar has additional plans for the game.

This. Plus, they have a lot of studios to assign misc jobs to; like porting by R* Toronto, story by R* North, engine enhancements by R* San Diego.

Having next gen versions won't impair development time. They can assign it to R* Toronto.

The only reason why I can't see a next gen version of GTA V is that a port or reversion is very expensive as they can't compensate for the money they've spent because of the few amount of next gen hardware.

GTA V on Gaikai is very likely, though.

I don't have problem with the console crapping out on me. I think thats as likely to happen at any time. I bought a PS3 on launch day and it lasted until 2010. Anyway if the console craps out early then just take it back and get a new one since it'll be under warranty. Whether or not I get a PS4 on launch this time will be down to the games. I suspect I probably will get one. Sony seem to be packing a punch with their launch line up, or so people are saying. We'll find out at E3

did i say anywhere in that post that i bought that many xboxs?lol it is a hassle and a half to call microsoft and have them send me a box to mail them my broken machine and then wait to get a new one. the slim has lasted me for years. i love it. ps and xbox will still be there a year after launch. ill be playing gta v for a while. if they port it to the new consoles then i may change my mind.

I reckon I'll get a year's worth of play out of GTA V on the 360, which gives me plenty of time to decide whether I want a next-gen console or go PC. I think a lot of people will do the same if they are enjoying the game and the multiplayer.

I don't think R* are trying to prove anything, because the current gen has a massive install base. What it will do is allow people time to make an informed decision on which console to get - and that will hurt microsoft.

I'm very happy for GTA V being for this gen.

They will prove what these machines are capable, even being 8 years old.

They've done it with RDR, but GTA defines an era.

It would not be fair if this generation were remembered by the GTA IV visual.

I'm not buying a next gen console on launch, the first batch is always the biggest, and the price always goes down a year or two later.

Exactly. Not to mention the fact that the initial batch has bigger failure rates and it takes a while to iron out the kinks. Whilst I could easily afford both the new PS and XBOX I'm not interested in the slightest until they come down in price. I won't be getting either for at least a few years after release date.

Good to see some common sense floating about.

@ title question. R* is trying to prove that they are the best game company by showing what they can do on common hardware beyond what other game company's can do.

San Andreas came out somewhat close to PS3 and X360 release and guess what mid 2000s game is one of the most played games even today?

They don't need any other ace besides a good game and they are sure to deliver that.

No. San Andreas came a good 13months before the launch of 360. In fact, 360 wasn't even announced for even 7 months after San Andreas' launch.

Nothing up their sleeves regarding to next gen consoles.

They already said they make their best game after they have practiced and got used to working on the current gen consoles is when they make the best game possible, with every knowledge in their hand. To, of course, deliver their best.

Xbox 360s and PS3s won't suddenly combust on the release of next-gen consoles. People will still have them, en masse.

Hey, now there's an idea! When the XO and PS4 sales in 2014 are terribly below expectations (as the will be), Sony and Microsoft can each send out a "security update patch" to their existing 70 million consoles in the field, that bricks them permanently. That should spur some sales of XO and PS4... colgate.gif

PS2 release date = March 4th 2000

GTA London Mission Packs = April & June 1999 (PS1)

GTA 2 = September 1999 (PS1)

Xbox 360 release date = November 2005 | PS3 = November 2006

San Andreas = October 2004 (PS2)

LCS = June 2006 (PS2)

VCS = March 2007 (PS2)

What does that have to do with anything?

are you an idiot sir?

They're not trying to prove a point.

They're trying to maximize sales at the point where people want something new, but can't all afford to drop megabucks on a new console. Early adopters will not be enough to justify a release on the next gen consoles. If they squarely aim at the existing generation, who are many millions strong, they have a chance to sell more copies and make more money.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually release to next gen. Just not right away.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

GTA V is releasing in the same quarter as the Xbox One and PS4. To make matters worse neither console is backwards compatible. Does Rockstar have an ace up its sleeve such as enhanced next gen ports? I really want GTA V to flourish but I think these facts will make it harder. I for one will support GTA V for years to come but the allure of next gen gaming will always be there beckoning us to switch over.

No. I think it's just the times meeting up.

I'd be seriously p#ssed off if a next gen version came out 3 or 4 months later and I already bought the inferior version. It would be superior in every way and everyone knows it that's why people are asking for a next gen version.

Don't hate on next gen or say you don't want one just because you can't afford it. Those of us who are asking for it just want the best version of 5, that's all.

A next gen port shouldn't be that hard. I mean the game has already been made. They just need to optimize the engine and graphics with that extra horsepower. And yes, perhaps add some additional content, but it would be worth it.

I think R* releasing GTA V so close the new consoles is them giving a final goodbye to the PS3 and XBOX 360, and giving people like me something to play while we wait.

^^^werd^^^

They jus worked 5 years working on GTAV with the current gen consoles in mind. Improving upon what they did with IV.

Im not sure what it takes to make the game available for nxt gen but pretty sure it would mean a delay if they were to release at the same time.

The Xbox 1 is going to be a bust and PS4 won't catch in right away because it will have some insane pice tag. So GTA V will definitely have a good amount of time to sell a lot of copies on current gen systems. And as stated before it isn't like ps3s and 360s will disappear when the next gen consoles are released. There will still be millions if them out there.

some people (not naming anyone here) seem to be under the delusion that people toss out or sell their old consoles when the new one come out. This idea could be more popular if there was backward capability.

Being a casual/mid lvl gamer, I still have plenty of games I still want to play on the PS3. I like to wait till the next gen has been out for a while that way you have a greater variety of games available, imo. Thats jus one of the reasons.

None of that appears to be true so far. Sony UK have all but admitted they're hoping to price the console around the £350 mark and they've categorically said it won't be priced anywhere near as high as the PS3 on launch. Its pretty obvious why it doesn't need to be anyway. Its using off the shelf parts and Blu-ray has long since paid for itself. Xbone I'm not so sure about, clearly you've got Kinect bundled with it as standard. Its worth noting that Sony don't seem to be including the PS Eye with every console. Its going to available separately by the looks of things.

Pre-orders for both consoles are doing well and some analysts are claiming they expect both consoles to sell at least double what they did at launch with the current generation. Pick up on both consoles in the first 18 months will be faster I think.
