Is R* trying to prove a point?

GTA V is releasing in the same quarter as the Xbox One and PS4. To make matters worse neither console is backwards compatible. Does Rockstar have an ace up its sleeve such as enhanced next gen ports? I really want GTA V to flourish but I think these facts will make it harder. I for one will support GTA V for years to come but the allure of next gen gaming will always be there beckoning us to switch over.

San Andreas came out somewhat close to PS3 and X360 release and guess what mid 2000s game is one of the most played games even today?

They don't need any other ace besides a good game and they are sure to deliver that.

I'm not buying a next gen console on launch, the first batch is always the biggest, and the price always goes down a year or two later. I think R* releasing GTA V so close the new consoles is them giving a final goodbye to the PS3 and XBOX 360, and giving people like me something to play while we wait.

No...If I remember correctly GTAV's release date was announced before PS4 and X1 had concrete release dates. I don't see how R* are trying to prove anything or get over on anybody. I don't think their sales will take any hit whatsoever. People may buy the new consoles and they may not be BC but most of the people buying consoles day 1 are people who already have a 360 or PS3. You really think these people are going to miss out on GTAV?

Im preobably gunna pick up a ps4 round christmas time or a couple of months after but it makes sense as to why they release GTA V in sept alot of ppl own current gen system and im pretty sure not alot of ppl are gunna adopt a next gen console day one of its release its gunna take time for nex gen console to build up a substancial number of owns to make as much profit as possible I say but there 2nd year of being on the market these consoles will start to hit there stride

Xbox 360s and PS3s won't suddenly combust on the release of next-gen consoles. People will still have them, en masse.

Nah it's just happened like that but I'm pretty sure RS's ace is some juicy extra content for next gen versions tounge2.gif

Maybe it's a deal with sony so people will buy PS3s instead of the new XBOX and yes I meant to write PS3, it makes sense Sony want to sell as many PS3s as they can in it's final years so for GTA V to come out only on X360 and PS3, and for PS3 to be the seemingly leading platform (single disc, each media demo was shown on PS3) people will buy a PS3 just to play the game thus snubbing X360 and XONE, also you could buy a PS4 and just play it via Gaikai, more reasoning. R* don't need next gen yet

Its not one of the most played games even today. It was hugely played in the 2-3 years after it came out but after that it clearly dropped off as the current gen took ahold. It looks incredibly old playing it today. I did here in the grapevine that sales on the PSN of both it and VC have been fairly low. I'm not sure anyone is that surprised though.

The ace up Rockstar's sleeve is that GTA V will be out on the next gen consoles sooner rather than later. I don't think anyone in games industry seriously doubts that.

They'll lose sales but it won't be too many. There's too many games coming this fall along with all the others within the past 2 years that people still play to make people stay with current consoles. I believe it will come to next gen, just not yet.

I don't see how they are trying to make a point.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts concerning this topic. I don't know when I will switch over to the next gen systems, but I do know it will not be within the first year of their launch. I work hard for my money, and I have a lot of other financial responsibilities that take priority over my budget for video games. With that said, I could not imagine dropping hundreds of dollars on a new console that is untested by consumers and has only a handful of games (that are probably only marginally better than current gen games) to play on it.

For me, it makes more sense to wait for the dust to settle before jumping into a whole new generation of media consumption. There will be inevitable price drops, slimmer versions, and all the kinks of these new machines will be ironed out. Developers will become better acquainted with the new hardware, thus producing better games that will truly go above and beyond what we have experienced so far. When all of these things have happened, then I will be ready to invest a good amount of money into my favorite hobby of all time...

But until then, you can bet your money that I will be blissfully enjoying GTA V and all of the other amazing games that can be played on the systems I already own.

Why? It's not like the PS3/360 will automatically stop functioning from the moment the PS4/One are released, people aren't going to sell them, it's not bravery or proving a point it's basic knowledge.

I'm talking about games that came 10 years ago. Which other game from that period is still played today by folks. Maybe Half LIfe 2 and that's it.

Of course it didn't sell to good on PSN, people had their PS2s and still played it there. Check the total sales for SA over all platforms and you'll see the big picture. And it looked like sh*t when it came out in 2004 honestly, so of course it looks old today.

I don't know about next-gen. Maybe there will be a port developed alongside PC version (since new consoles seem to be more like PC's than ever before). But besides the usual high res textures and more peds/cars and view distance, the rest would be the same.

You gotta think, GTA V has to be a HUGE investment for Rockstar. It's been in development for at least 4-5 years now. They have a lot riding on it. From a business stand point it would make a lot of sense to release an enhanced next gen port and market the hell out of any additional content and improvements it may have. The amount of money, time and resources put into GTA V has raised the bar in the industry. I think Rockstar has additional plans for the game.

Doubtful. People need to get next gen out of there head as it's irrelevant to GTA V. Next gen won't effect the sales either. Need proof? Go look up when San Andreas came out and then come back to me.

I disagree. From a business standpoint it would be better to use the time, effort, money and resources porting GTA V to next gen consoles on making a completely new game, possibly on a new engine for next gen. It seem pointless porting GTA V to next gen consoles just to please a handful of people. At best it might be up on PSN/Marketplace for those who jump on the next gen bandwagon so soon.

What does that have to do with anything?

It's called History and/or a Pattern.

Polyphony Digital and their Gran Turismo series (another multi-billion selling franchise) also has a history of releasing a game on the current gen within the timeframe of the next-gen releasing for the previous 2 gens as well as the current one. So it's not like R* is the only company that has that "it's better to milk a saturated market, then to wait for a new market to milk you" mindset.

Nah thats not true. It won't cost a lot to port it to the next gen consoles and doing so will mean the game has a life beyond the next 18 months as people swap over to the new systems. GTA VI could easily and probably will be another five years away.

The bottom line is it makes absolute business sense to have GTA V on all the major consoles at the cross over of the generations. It makes no sense to leave it only on the old consoles when take up of the next gen systems are expected to be much faster than last time.

Even Microsoft has said it's continuing to support Xbox 360 for the next couple of years.

Microsoft said they hope to sell 25 million more Xbox 360 consoles in the next five years (expecting about half of those to be existing users buying replacements). They want there to be 100 million Xbox 360s out there some day. They want it to be the next PS2 as far as sales and longevity.

If the 360 really has that kind of future, it's enough time for GTA V to not be the last GTA game for the 360.

MS are dreaming though. They're just saying that to keep peoples eye on it. Sales of the 360 have since started to taper off and its been pretty evident over the last 18 months, in terms of big 360 exclusive releases, that MS themselves are hardly giving it their fullest attention. The last time I checked it increasingly looked like the PS3 was going to over take it on global sales.

GTA V will be the last GTA for this current gen. There comes a point where you don't want to have to pander to the needs of the lower spec hardware. If and when there is a GTA VI it will be massively optimised for the next gen sytems and impossible to run on older consoles.

No way, next GTA is certainly going next gen. I'm sure GTA V will be Rockstar's last dedicated game on current generation and that they are probably already hard at work on next gen engine that will run their games for the next 5-6 years.

Doesn't matter if it doesn't costs a lot to port the game, package it, put it on disk, ship to retailers and all that jazz. Time, money, resources and effort could be spent elsewhere. GTA V will have a life for years to come regardless of next gen just like San Andreas. San Andreas never was ported to PS3 or 360. I'd rather R* first next gen game to be something completely new as I said.

Digital download would be the better option because then folk can download it onto this gen consoles and next gen consoles. We will have to agree to disagree I guess.
