What is the 'mechanic' skill for?

I was reading the CVG gta v preview again and I noticed there is a Mechanic skill which you can improve. I have no idea what this is for, any ideas?

I'm assuming you'll be able to mod cars yourself, as your skill increases you can install more mods and repair a damaged car.

Maybe to break into cars better, without setting off alarms or whatever. Maybe to start a stolen car faster. Or to crack open safes, disable security or something like that....

NYC PATROL

It's definitely going to come in handy for heists it sounds like. Curious to know exactly for what.

Maybe the more you customise your cars the less chance you have of damaging it when you fine tune it

I think the more you customize cars, the more unlocks you receive for upgrades like engine mods, brakes, sh*t like that.

You guys are all missing the point. I doubt it has anything to do with modifying cars, as you can purchase modifications and don't need any skills to do so. I think it has to do with heists. Maybe there's lockpicking, safecracking, and things of that nature in the game. Maybe you have to plan out how to get through security areas and things like that. At least that's what the CVG guys made it seem like.

Lots of good speculations here.

My take on it is this. Remember that scene in Trailer 2 where we see Trevor approaching some guy who got his RV stuck in a river? I assume that's one of the random encounters you can get when exploring the map - like in Red Dead Redemption. It's possible that you have a better chance of success when fixing the pedestrian's vehicle depending on your Mechanic stat. Then you can steal the RV or return it to the person you just helped.

The mechanic skill might have a different purpose for each protag. Trevor (Flying), Franklin (Autos), Micheal (Heist related).

Yeah, my guess would be lockpicking, safecracking, disabling security/alarms.

I'm sure it's related to vehicles. Either avoiding attention when stealing a car, fixing it or upgrading it.

To fix this snorkle's head.

I hope there are schools in GTA V. I really want Lil_B_The Basedgod to go to school virtually at the very least.

Dang! He needs a lot lessons! Might give him one, though! I'll make him cry like a Military Base's Siren!

Ah, but do you actually know that as a fact?

I think it may make modifications better or allow access to higher-tier modifications, but also car-jacking. Maybe even vehicle repair - that would be kinda cool.

Good old speculation, ahh how I've missed you

Maybe the mechanic skill is used to fix cars? If I remember correctly, one preview of gta v mentioned that you can salvage car wrecks underwater, so maybe we can find parts and when our skill level is high enough, we can use those parts to build special rare vehicles. Would be a very awesome incentive to explore the deep blue sea.

I also just read the gameinformer preview again and they said you may encounter broken down cars next to the road, which you can probably fix depending on your mechanic skills. Maybe the car will go slow with poor handling if your skill is low, fast if high.
