Idea about fuel being in the game...

Edit - Added a partial TL;DR to the topic because I guess it instantly comes off as just another stupid topic about fuel, but please HEAR ME OUT and see why it's not all bad if there was a fuel system in a GTA game.

To those who hate or just find it stupid, the idea of fuel/petrol being in the game I have to say I don't think you have fully considered the possibilities if it wasn't half-assed like it would be in any other game these days.

Pretty much any time I hear or read gripes about it, it's the same things. I mean filling up gas isn't usually fun and it's usually a bore. Why would you want to do that in a game where you can be skydiving, shooting, robbing, pulling off heists, races, triathlons, hunting, drifting, scuba diving, and all that other insane sh*t?!

These arguments are understandable ones, yes, reasonable enough, but these people must be lacking in imagination. If Rockstar were to use a fuel system to its full potential the possibilities would be just as infinite as the rest of what we've come to expect.

The fueling process doesn't have to be the same as realtime, perhaps it would be a button press when you drive to the pump, in the car; then a quick, cinematic (like hopping fences or jacking cars "cinematics" in IV) in-game animation of flashing a credit card and a few button presses/beeps, with at most about 8 seconds of actually fueling it up depending on the amount left in the tank, hopefullt 10 seconds tops for your average cars. Helicopters and big semi trucks or planes would probably take longer, have their own fueling stations or something.

------ And this could be said to be going too far into realism but maybe certain gas stations or situations would require you to pay inside at a clerk, with functional controls behind the counter (along with register for another quick buck). You could just give ------ yourself the gas, at risk of getting shot or caught on CCTV.

Or the fueling can be more interactive. Maybe you get out when parked near the pump, holding a button down to actually pump the gas. And you could stop and take your guns out, or something. If a 10 second cutscene is REALLY that bad, then give the player more control. These are just ideas that would all need to be playtested, which I'm sure GTA V has been a sh*t load, to figure out what really works in practice.

Running out of gas doesn't have to be that big a problem though, especially if we can store things in trunks, like fuel cans, which we know are in the game. Are they just scattered across the map or can we get more use than that out of them..? But I digress...

Anyway, if there were a fuel system in the game then I think we can all see that you would most likely be able to INVEST in and PURCHASE either individual gas staions across the map, or certain companies for either DISCOUNTED or FREE GASOLINE. I would imagine they would have differing prices that might even fluctuate as time goes on, maybe in the story gas prices rise and fall, which would make this purchase even more significant. And there are more upgrades to vehicles than what have been specifically announced, perhaps we can get upgraded gas tanks or parts to improve mileage for our toys and let them last longer. This game's all about the money and this is another opportunity to get it as well as spend it.

------ Also, if a fuel system is in the game, then electric cars become that much more functional.

What about those nice big tankers that were gone in GTA IV? Speaking of which, there are some mods for that game on PC that are worth trying for the experiment of adding fuel to the GTA formula and the ideas that have been brought forth in some of them.

We know that we can hijack fuel tankers, so can we now legitimately hijack them and score a profit? With a fuel system, you open up the possibility of this scenario: Noticing the fuel prices going up, so you decide to get a more direct source for it. You head to a gas station off the freeway somewhere and soon enough a fuel tanker comes along off the road and stops in to fuel the pumps at the station. Do what you will with the driver and take the truck to a warehouse and stash it for selling later, or perhaps your own garage and keep all your getaway car's fully fueled.

A fuel system would also add to the tactics of the game. We already know that you can do some pretty cool stuff regarding leaking fuel trails and cars and we can set fuel trails on fire. But you would most likely be able to siphon gasoline. I mean, where are you gonna fill all those jerry cans up, right at the pumps ever time or are you gonna have some fun and commit some crimes while doing it, this IS a GTA game after all. So you could also hopefully just drain a car's gasoline, presumably onto the ground where you could easily blow it up, or when an unsuspecting enemy in a mission or online decides he needs to take it, it's flashing RED on empty.

------ A side note about this, what would be even more gameplay enhancing is if cars blow up most easily with a full tank of gas than without. I know the ARMA game series has a mechanic like this.

All in all I think that a fuel system in GTA V really is an idea worth trying. If they half-ass it and make it boring or just feel like it doesn't belong then I would be against that. But come on, use your imagination, and consider what could and would happen in the game that you most likely are underestimating and probably are gonna be blown away with.

TL;DR

Please at least skim through this topic or you'll miss out on what I'm trying to say. What my point is, is that a fuel system doesn't have to be just tedious extra sh*t that nobody wants, having a fuel system that applies to all vehicles (think about it, NOT just you the player is inconvenienced by this, it's EVERYBODY including your enemies). Please at least READ these ideas, I don't think anybody has brought up a lot of what I'm trying to say. The point here again is that it's not so much specifically about the act of refueling at a pump (which could have a chance encounter with a random stranger event or any kind of thing the writers can imagine). it's the consequences of what a fuel system carries with it, the possibilities it opens up in gameplay. It's about everything outside of refueling, the fact that it's there affects the rest of in dramatic yet subtle ways.

Explain to me why a feature I find boring and useless shouldn't be optional. Just explain that. Please tell me why I should have to deal with this bullsh*t with no option to turn it off.

Using gas as a flame weapon and buying gas stations does not mean I need to waste a single second of gameplay on a boring chore.

Well f*ck me softly I lost interest right there. tounge2.gif

This topic has been done to death and I aint reading all that sh*t you wrote.

I simply don't want this in the game and doubt it will be so there really isn't anything to discuss. Nothing you have said in that long ass post will change my opinion.

I know it's a forum and everything, but still TLDR. Mainly because it's an over talked about topic, Personally I think it would utterly ruin the game.

Wouldn't effect me, would add immersion to the game to be honest.. I'd make sure I had a full tank, plus everyone seems to think that if Fuel was added to a GTA game that it'd run out within 5 Minutes.. Seriously I crashed cars in less time then that and just swapped. Can take it or leave it.

Perhaps refuelling N20 at petrol stations would appease everyone? Some fuel type immersion, without the necessity.

True. I strongly believe the people who want fuel are just kids who can't drive yet and want to experience this cool thing called stopping at a gas station for gas. Because that's something grown-ups do.

The option to see what hurdles and adventures that running out of fuel would bring would be nice to have. People see it as (and I can see why they look at it like this)... I have to go to a petrol station, and spend time that could be spent in a MUCH more fun way; filling up my car and I also can run out of fuel which will leave me stranded in the middle of f*cking nowhere... Agreed - this sounds like sh*t.

Filling up the car shouldn't take even 5 seconds - u drive in, car gets filled up automatically or there could be a skip-able cut-scene where you or the petrol station service dude does it for you, and then it's done. This fuel would last 2 trips around the perimeter of the map so running out of fuel with a full tank would be as rare as rocking horse sh*t.

----------------------------------

I'm travelling from the north of the map with unlimited fuel... I get to los santos safely - with the amount of time I'm going to spend on this game, this could get old after the 1 millionth time.

I'm travelling from the north of the map with limited fuel... I get to 5 miles outside of Salton Sea and run out of fuel, f*ck, I wonder over the first hill to see if I can find another vehicle or just some help... suddenly I hear a gunshot... its a drug deal gone wrong... some of the guys has just spotted me, I start running back to my car where I know I've got an M4 in the boot. The gunfight goes down and my vehicle gets the f*ck shot out of it, I take them all out, manage to find their vehicles but they've had the their tyres slashed (would be a cool feature) and the wires have been cut. f*ck sake. I stumble upon an old sanchez (its not running great) but one of the locals that were out hunting has called the cops so I need to find a different route. I try to bike round the outskirts of town but more the police are now searching everywhere for me so I get down to the river and luckily find a skimmer and I can't believe it but there is about 5 Kilo of cocaine stashed in the rear end (I think this was part of the deal that went down). Result!!! I take off and fly down to Los Santos and land safely. As I walk to shore I hear a police megaphone. "STOP right there and get your f*cking hands in the air you drug dealing mother f*cker"...

Adrenaline kicks in... I leg it towards the small car park and find a Comet, I reckon the aircraft had a tracker on it and now this is a case of mistaken identity, I scud round to a few tunnels and alleys that I know and shift the heat. I get the car sprayed and number plates changed at a 'friends' and all is good. I'm 5 kilo of coke richer and my flying, driving and shooting skills have all increased and/or been kept running at 99.9 percent of my 'dont f*ck with me' scale biggrin.gif

Now that was a little bit more entertaining than just driving down to Los Santos because it was something new. I was forced to do things differently and had an entirely different experience. Instead of driving the same routes all the time I was presented with something different. Ok this could've happened without fuel, but I think its a clever way for R* to be able to introduce some of these new dynamic events upon us. I wouldn't suggest having fuel if it didn't add anything new to the game. This is also why I think road works and road closures would be cool because it forces the player to go different routes and therefor it can lead to different encounters.

That's my take on it anyways.

NOTE - I wonder if vehicles could have trackers fitted to vehicles, whether tryes can be slashed or wiring/brakes cut and/or if we can stash stuff in the trunks of vehicles. - I think the latter may be true due to 'that' (3 protags looking in trunk/boot) artwork.

Dan Houser knows it's an idiotic idea and that's all that matters to me. wink.gif

When we were making it(GTA SA), one of the things I talked about – and thank god they didn’t give in to my idiocy – was, ‘Hey, we’ve got to make it interesting to drive four hours on a freeway and you have to stop to fill up on fuel’, and the team were like, “God, give it a rest, mate’.
