EDIT (7/31/13):  Made some changes to the idea and reworded a bunch of it for clearer understanding.  Please reread it because its MUCH better now! biggrin.gif

OK there are a lot of ppl including myself who think a jail system would be cool.  On the flip side there are ppl who think it wouldn't either because they just want to be negative or they just havent thought about it long enough to see the potential.  Regardless,  the goal of this idea is to find the medium so ppl who want it can have it and ppl who don't aren't forced to deal with it.  I think I've found that medium.  Here is how the system would work.

* Get busted with 3 stars or less and you respawn immediately outside the police station.  You get to keep your weapons and vest but you will lose some money (a fine for the amount of damage you caused,  # of NPC's you hurt,  etc. during that wanted level).  If you surrendered the fine will be less.

* Get busted with 4 stars and you respawn immediately outside the police station.  You get to keep your weapons but you will lose your vest and some money.  If you surrendered you get to keep your vest but will still lose money.

* Get busted with 5 stars and you are sentenced to spend the rest of that ingame day in city jail (a holding cell with other characters in it).  You lose all of your weapons,  armor and some money.  If you surrendered then your arrest will be reduced to a 4 star bust where you will respawn immediately outside the police station with your weapons but still lose your armor and some money.  If you didn't surrender then once the holding cell loads you will have two ways to handle your time.

Get bailed out - You do this by using the phone inside the cell to call a friend from your contacts list to come bail you out.  This will cost you 50% of the fine which will be paid or owed to the friend you called.  The catch is you will have to wait one ingame hour before being released.

Do the time - In other words freeroam inside the holding cell until midnight.  Do this and you'll pay 0% of your fine.  During freeroam sometimes random events will happen that could be fun.  For example,  the cops opening the cell door to bring in/take out an inmate and you use that opportunity to try an escape (KO the cop,  take his weapon,  etc).  Another is a NPC picking a fight with you or an NPC simply walking up to talk to you (similar to the strippers in IV when they walked up to you and asked if you wanted a private dance).  Like the strippers you can walk away to ignore them or press LB to communicate.  Communicating sometimes leads to new contacts,  freeworld hookups or side missions once released.

* Get sentenced to city jail 3 times (3 strike rule) and earn a month in prison.  You lose all weapons,  armor and a lot of money (a huge fine).  Before going to prison an interogation room will load up with you and a cop in it.  You will then be given 2 options.  1) snitch on a friend or 2) do your time.  If you choose to snitch you will be given the opportunity to select a friend from your contacts list to snitch on.  You will then be immediately released and he will be arrested shortly after.  You will then lose him as a contact.  If you choose to tell the cops to f*ck off and do your time then the next scene will be you on a prison bus going to prison.  Like the taxi ride you can sit through the ride or skip to the prison.  If you sit throught the ride you can then switch to a different character and free your buddy from the bus.  devil.gif  If you skip then it will go to a cutscene of you entering prison and then your cell.  You then will have two ways to handle your time.

Speed up your time - This option will be available every night at lights out (10pm).  It will skip one ingame week.

Do the time - Freeroam inside the prison for one ingame month.  During freeroam you can do things like play dominoes,  cards,  chess,  basketball,  prison fight club,  etc.  Besides that like the city jail small time events will happen throughout each day opening up opportunities for you to do things.  For example inmates plotting an escape in which you can get involved.  You can also switch to one of the characters that are free and plan a breakout.  Either way these escapes would be planned just like the heists (a series of small missions to prepare for the big one).  More examples of a random events are riots,  NPC's picking fights with you or NPC's simply walking up to talk to you.  As stated above you can walk away to ignore them or press LB to communicate.  Communicating could lead to new contacts,  freeworld hookups or side missions in prison as well as once released.

As mentioned above there are ways around the jail aspect.  Cheats!  tounge.gif  True but not exactly what I meant.  You have the "surrender" mechanic and the "snitch" option.  As long as you surrender or snitch you never see the inside of a jail.  Now in IV you couldnt give up with say 4 stars.  The cops were stuck on kill mode and shot you regardless if you were armed or not.  R* would need to make the "surrender" option available at all times for this idea to be possible.  Maybe something like if I have a weapon out the cops will shoot like normal but if I put my weapon away and stand stationary then they will just approach with guns drawn giving my character a chance to surrender.

Regardless,  I think this makes it possible for R* to add a jail aspect and not being an annoyance to those who don't want to deal with it.  Not only that this idea creates the risk/reward aspect of resisting and surrendering.  Basically the surrender mechanic will have a purpose.  I mean in IV I always just ran away because surrendering gave the same results as being busted which was simply respawning in front of the police station.  Regardless,  I would really love to see this or something like it in V.  Thoughts?

I like this ideea, but i want to upgrade little. Here is ideea upgrade:

-Then you are interogate,to be three options:

1.Turn a friend

2.Do your time(go to jail)

3.Try a escape(you havent weapons because cops confiscate, but you can have anti-bullet vest),and to be a lot of mods(1.Call a friend and then trying to escape togeter.2.Down the cop and then use like a hoslage and say what wou want:money, escape, weapons, etc, but with condition to free the hoslage, and big attention,F.I.B. marksmen,3.Down the cop, give him weapons and try a escape4.Run,break the window, and try to escape with a car, etc)But you wil catch, you going more time to jail

-Then you chiose second option you to create a escape plan(single,or with some prisons)but you will catch,to continue your sentinces into a more secure zone, but you chose to advertistment cop about escape plans about anothers prizoners, you will have reduce your senteced. To can work in jail, that reduce your senience. To can attack another cops or prisoniers or to talk early. But this chose can do at sentinces into a more secure zone.

This is my wishes to upgrade wour ideea.

Yea I made a thread awhile bk about the same thing I love the idea aswel imagine when u do get locked up when your in prison and u walk by guards or inmates u hear them talk about u and things u did outside of prison I can defiantly see this being put in to a gta game probably a few yrs down the line.

I voted yes....however, you can't make something like this mandatory. The best way to do it is give the player an option right as they get arrested. Spend time in jail or skip it all together.

Then, the only people would complain would be those who don't want to waste time pressing the skip option.

I see this problem a lot when you guys post new ideas. You have to think in terms of options without it affecting players who don't like a lot of changes and pose the idea as so.

You must have skimmed thru the post. Its not mandatory. You only go to jail or prison if you choose. You see if you get busted with 4 stars or less its like now and you respawn outside the station. Only when you reach 5 stars does jail become possibility but you still have an option to avoid it. Surrender. If you surrender your arrest is dropped to a 4 star bust which respawns you outside the station. So as long as you surrender you will never see jail or prison.

That's just the 1st option tho. If you resist with 5 stars and you're busted you immediately get an option to bail out once in the cell. If its your 3rd 5 star bust and you are threatened with prison you immediately get the option to snitch on a friend and get released. Even if you dont want to snitch and go to prison there is an option to skip it once you get there. Its all been covered man. The only ppl who still complain are just negative nancies. wink.gif

We do get punished for getting busted and dying! Fees and weapon loss. Why is that not good enough anymore? Realism is only good when it's not directly interrupting gameplay.

Dude did you freaking read the OP? Basically if you surrender you NEVER see jail or prison meaning being busted is handled just like the past games. You respawn outside the station with money and weapon loss. Now please get you whiny ass out of this thread and go bitch some more in the fuel threads.

Bump! I support this idea all the way! Especially with the fact that it is well thought out, and serves as an OPTION for those of us that like the idea. Thanks Bumpy
