They are just going to get alot better with each new entry. I remember reading an interview with someone from Rockstar and they said they wanted to make a GTA where San Andreas, Liberty city and Vice city were all in one game. That sh*t would be bonkers. If they did that I'm assuming they'd have a different protag for each city. It'd also be cool if Vice city was during the 80's era, San andreas was during the 90's era and Liberty city was during the 2000's era and you could switch between each city at anytime just like they're doing with V. Something like that would probably take like 10 years to complete though , we'd be some old f*ckers lol. Plus Rockstar still has other games on the back burner they need to get out like Red Dead 2, Bully 2 and Manhunt 3. I'm doubting that they'll make a Max Payne 4 but who knows. GTA games are so densely and richly designed, and do not consist of blocks of cut-and-paste repetition like other big open world games, so that the sheer scale of design effort needed for the next GTA world may break the budget, not even including the game mechanics, media and storyline. Producing the next GTA may just be too expensive to break even. 2. More generally, the next gen consoles are really TV set-top boxes designed to drain the general populace of every shred of income and privacy we have left, selling us out to every media company, content provider, cable company, advertising aggregator and social media vampire corporation that will rise up in the next 10 years. Labeling these devices and their business model as game consoles is a mere afterthought. I expect that the installed base and the game market for these platforms will develop so slowly that game companies will be ecstatic to sell 1 or 2 million games of a given title. This strategy to be the next set-top box may fail so badly, that not only will the interactive set-top market collapse (a market which has been tried and failed for the last 40 years, by the way), but they will bring down the entire video game industry with them. 3. Our only hope is that after 10 years of gameless hell and the near destruction of the video game business, the video game business will rise again, on its own merits, after all the corporate leeches mentioned in statement 1 have gone down the rathole, pulling 100 billion dollars of investor funding in with them. Then, with new, pure-play, truly next gen gaming consoles, made by new companies, HD gaming will rise again and perhaps the GTA franchise will again dominate the landscape. This IS why they are trying to get everything they always wanted to include, into V. Another unfortunate reason is that they didn't want to turn into a "Friday the 13th" company and just keep on bringing out rubbish sequels. Below is a segment of the interview... "This is the last Grand Theft Auto" - D.Houser Dan Houser is known to f*ck with people for the fun of it. The day they offically stop making GTA is the day I protest for Hauser to be replaced and the series be rebooted Someone else will take over and continue the franchise. jamieleng Posted May 30, 2013 Share Posted May 30, 2013 There will certainly be more GTA games after V, just not for a while. I predict GTA VI will arrive in 2019 at the earliest. The time span between the releases of GTA IV and V was 5 years and 5 months. I predict the timespan from V to VI will be even longer because of the jump to new, more powerful consoles. I can actually see it shorter. I reckon they'll continue using the RAGEngine (ver. whatever) & certainly Euphoria animation (as it still hasn't been surpassed). The technology jump doesn't seem that much greater either. Then again, how are they going to top V? Don't get me wrong: I don't like the idea but it just occurred to me; maybe that's why the went all in on this game (having every major feature every GTA game has ever had). What do you think? Also because the consoles are told to be easier to develop for, with a more user-friendly architecture. I think R* will always strive for excellence, so it won't necessarily be shorter, but it doesn't necessarily have to be longer, either. Then again, how are they going to top V? I see it being an improvement in the sense that IV was improvement over its previous iterations. Even if they don't pull back on the actual content like they did with IV, the biggest improvements will be within the game mechanics themselves, afforded by the larger processing power and the inclusion of WAY more RAM, leading to even more rich, detailed, layered experience. NY & LA are the two greatest playgrounds in America (and probably the world), so everything after those two places is second best. Yes we could have another version of Miami, but the success of that location was inextricably linked to the era in which it was set. That is the biggest problem I see for the future of the franchise. @billy james I'm guessing it's the seemingly draconian nature of next gen. I will be sitting out next gen, at least until I can guage how much my consumer rights have been eroded or the next must have R* game is released. Imagining how much processing power has increased in the last 20 years, and how it's almost exponentially improved since then (on PC, at least), it's crazy to think what we'll be playing by then. Games have already reached the point on the current gen consoles that I'm still often impressed, just exploring RDR's world for the sake of looking at it, for instance.
