The Hippie
I've come to love songs that are longer than the norm. 8, 9, 10, 12, even 20 minute songs turn out to be some of the greatest jams of all time. So I've dedicated this topic to those long songs we've all come to listen and love over time. I'd like to see what you guys got, definitely feel free to share 'em with the world! "Before the beginning" by Frusciante and "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic are both very similar yet two of the greatest jams I know. (Which one do you like more?) The Grateful Dead have been known to have some great jams. This is a live 21min masterpiece. WAR with this 23min track. C'mon, it's Neil Young, nuff said. The man's a legend. I'll leave you with this for now. I've left out some great songs, but this should fill your minds for a good hour. Post what ya got! Tyler
Frusciante actually took a lot of influence from Eddie Hazel in terms of his guitar work. You can hear the Funkadelic in John's solo stuff, and it seeped way into BSSM era RHCP. I haven't been listening to too many extended tracks lately, but since I've been on GKMC a lot I figure it's worth throwing this into the ring. GreatGig
I'm not really into Kendrick Lamar but I'm glad I checked out that track. Incredibly relaxed and just excellently executed. I love how his vocals suit the beat so well. Cheers for sharing that one, man I love long songs (being a Pink Floyd fan you kind of have to) no matter what genre. I think there's something about them that just let's the artist be completely free without the "traditional" restraints of compressing things into 4-5 minutes. Anyway, an obvious choice for me would have to be Pink Floyd's Echoes. This live version is 25 minutes and every one of them is enjoyable. The bass heavy groove that runs right through the middle is so damn funky and then that solo right at the end just crushes my heart with how gorgeous it sounds. Another favourite of mine is Kanye West's Runaway. I loved the short film he did but this particular song just blew me away. I've never heard anything like it before. It starts off nice and clean, a sharp beat with that ominous growl in the back, and then just transforms into this raw sound with gritty guitars and a full on beat. Beautiful. As for Neil Young, you need to add "Like A Hurricane" to that list.
Shenmue18
2112 by Rush Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix Octravarium by Dream Theater Child in Time by Deep Purple Echos by Pink Floyd Dogs by Pink Floyd Rapper's Delight by Sugerhill Gang Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull Thick as a Brick is 43:40, really long song. Beautiful. thEQlaqhHeY Runaway is probably my favorite track off MBDTF. Pretty much the perfect ode to Kanye's nature and a kind of apology for it, at least in the narrative of the album. Love how he puts his voice through the production and it just turns into this raw sound that almost feels like he's just sobbing into the mic. So raw. All right, so I was trying to figure out my favorite long song and I remembered it. The whole album is pretty awesome but Cassandra Gemini is just like the perfect sh*t to trip to. Great stuff, the instrumentation is everywhere and Omar's guitar work is impeccable in this one.

gta_king
My first ever album was Bat Out Of Hell 2 by Meat Loaf and I've since grew to be a prog-rock fan so the average length of song in my library tends to be 8 minutes or more. Some of my favourite epics are, and I'll try to limit this to one per band, otherwise you'd just see a huge list of Dream Theater here. Genesis - Suppers Ready Dream Theater - Octavarium Yes - Close To The Edge Rush - 2112 Transatlantic - Stranger In Your Soul Meat Loaf - Objects In The Rear View Mirror Symphony X - The Odyssey Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I love Echoes but it does drag on a bit in places) Stratovarius - Elysium ELP - Tarkus (About the only ELP song I do like) Regarding Transatlantic, on the album this is split up into 12 or so tracks but was concieved as one track but The Whirlwind is incredible and is about 77 minutes long. Mate i remember when there was a YouTube advert advertising this album, and it played the most pathetic most awful, most simplistic ridiculously sh*t song possible. I know it's the same album because that is the exact same picture. This song though is worlds better even though it's not my style and not even something i would choose to listen to, damn, that album must have some utter sh*t on it. Wolf of Badenoch
Still one of the greatest songs of any length I've ever heard. Also, if I have trouble sleeping, this has knocked me right out many times.
Vega LVI
Somebody has already posted Jesus of Suburbia, so I feel obligated to post Homecoming (2004). And one of my favorite songs, period: Roundabout (1971). And I believe Goin' Home (1966) is The Rolling Stones' longest song. And finally, When the Music's Over (1967) by The Doors. Edmachine
I was extremely surprised listening to this for the first time at the age of, like, 6, because it was the longest song I had ever listened to by far and it just kept going and going! It's minimal, therefore somewhat repetitive, but really interesting to listen to. Not that long, but oh, so powerful, love the explosion at 3:30.
