I really don't know what the fuss about half life is, its so overrated in my opinion. when I played it, it seemed like every other generic first person shooter out there. what makes it so special?

No idea, Shooting really lame blobs in a fps wasnt great.

Did play Counter strike a bit back in the day though. icon14.gif

I hate it when many call CoD the king of FPS games. Well, on the MP side that may be the case (as far as popularity goes) but to me Half Life is still the king.

Battlefield 3? It felt like a generation ahead of CoD. Can't wait for Battlefield 4.

Open world sandbox vs generic-linear FPS. Yeah, I'll go with GTA V.

I just facepalmed in real life.

Look, if you really think Half Life is generic, then I guess GTA is a generic open-world game! Oh, they both just basically reinvented their respective genres. But why even try to explain anything to someone who clearly is a moron.

What is so special about half life?

Well, calling a game that represents something very near and dear to me generic and not realizing GTA actually has something important in common with Half Life, is honestly quite stupid. Not everyone can like everything of course and there's nothing wrong with that.

I won't write an essay on Half Life since it's really late here but I'll just say this: Half Life puts a huge emphasis on telling a story and setting a world you want to explore and interact with, and GTA strives to do basically the same thing. Where they differ is in execution of these principles. So if you're the type who likes the story in GTA, then why hate on another game that's really about the story as well? They're both on the same side more or less as far I'm concerned, only coming from different angles.

So, what makes Half Life special for me are much of the same things that make GTA special for me; the attention to detail, memorable characters, solid gameplay, good sense of atmosphere, pleasing aesthetics, believable game world and the list goes on.

Half Life 3 is not happening, so of course GTA V wins.

Umm, HL3 is happening.

I think you have your definitive answer, though not very surprising on a GTA forum.

With the attention span & memory of the average gamer (or consumer), I wouldn't be surprised if many said "What's a Half Life?". I haven't even played the second one, even though I'm aware of its significance & impact.

If people got bored waiting for GTA V, how must they feel waiting for Episode 3 (or HL3 as it will now be)?

Why are people saying that Half-Life 2 is overrated? The game only sold 6+ million copies... suicidal.gif

As for the topic, Valve and Rockstar know how to make good games that people still play years later. I would buy both.

Only? wow.gif 6 million sales is a huge achievement, gaming wasn't as popular back then either.

Don't let GTAIV fool you with 20 million copies sold because that is just on another level, but then again they did have a budget of 100 million so...

Also the half life franchise as a whole has sold about 20 million copies.

True, 6 million is a lot but the series shouldn't be called "overrated". Not to mention, Hl2 came out 7-8 years ago...meanwhile Call of Duty games are coming out every single year(That is what you call overrated).

Half-Life 1 is and probably always will be the greatest game I have ever played.

Half-Life 2 wasn't as good as the first but was still brilliant.

As much as I love GTA, it comes second for me, which is still very good in my eyes since I could name tons of game series which I like.

The Half-Life games are overrated. Story is interesting, but nothing stands out.

Look at the great games that have followed in Half-lifes wake though, and all the entertainment out of it....Portal 1 and 2, Team Fortress 2, Gary's Mod. The countless amount of mods and Videos thanks to the Valve Source Engine.

Very few games offer that amount of entertainment thanks to a single well done engine, and mod community. Sad to see soo many companies refuse to offer mod support.

Half Life 3 without a shadow of a doubt.

The funny thing is, when Half Life 3 comes out (probably on Source 2) Valve is going to also have to re-release any popular mods it has control over (such as Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress etc.) on the new engine as well right away. If they don't, then modders will just take the new game engine after buying HL3 and make their own new version of Counter Strike or Team Fortress before Valve does which might cause problems in the long run.

I always wondered why Counter Strike Source came free with Half-Life 2 when I bought it at retail. Now I understand why. It was because if Valve didn't release CS:S right away, some modder would just create it out of the HL2 code and release it anyway. Just like how the original Counter Strike was modded from the original Half Life 1.

I don't think HL2 is overrated, but just because a game doesn't sell well or get annual releases, doesn't make it NOT overrated. Just imagine if a game like the new Tomb Raider (Good game, but nowhere near GOAT material, and didn't really break any sales records) was rated a 10 by most gaming outlets and was high on most recent "Greatest Games of All Time" lists. You would still say it was overrated even though it wasn't as high a seller as a game like COD. I'm not comparing HL2 to Tomb Raider, I'm just saying that sales alone wouldn't automatically void a game of overrated status.

Asking in a GTA forum. I never got into Half Life or Portal. Half Life 1 was alright, it was definitely something different back then. Half Life 2 just felt like more of the same with updated graphics. It's a great game, just not my style. Portal, I got bored halfway through, never finished it. Portal 2, same thing (borrowed it from friend). Valve just isn't my cup of tea.

Half Life 2 definitely has it's shortcomings. The game hasn't aged well at all. The silent protagonist act used to be charming but by today's standards it's just seen as lazy.

The plot is also kinda weird and vague. The whole Ravenholm horror section (which is admittedly actually quite scary) just seems seriously out of place compared to the rest of the game.

The best thing about HL2 was the physics. The Gravity Gun was awesome. Sadly, the Source engine hasn't aged too well either. It's still excellent at what it does and it has cool add-on utilities like Source Filmmaker but compared to other modern engines it's kinda lacking.

GTA by far.

Never really could get into Half Life, not as good as people make it out to be, but that's just me and my opinion. Definitely had some cool bits. Who knows could be because it didn't age well and I didn't play it new or something but I just couldn't get into it at all.

San Andreas has sold more than twice what Half Life 2 sold (and more than GTA IV), and it was released in the same year. Just sayin'

Keep in mind that Half-Life is mainly a PC focused franchise. And we all know how bad PC games' sales can be. Sure, GTA started off on PC too, but by the time SA was out, it was more focused on consoles and porting to PC.

Valve don't and never have released sales figures regarding digital distribution over Steam. The bottom line is that you have no idea how many copies of HL2 Valve have sold through Steam. I'm guessing it's a lot. Arguably more than at retail.

Here's the quote:

"Over 6.5 million copies of Half-Life 2 were sold at retail by December 3, 2008, making it a bestselling PC game (not including the number of sales via Steam)."

Valve is a lot smarter than Rockstar Games. Creating a digital distribution platform that awards larger profit margins to developers whilst systematically fighting piracy and used-game sales (something only possible because of the popularity of a game like HL2 which forced people to use Steam in the first place) is something Rockstar never got round to.

Also, you just know that deep down Rockstar wishes it had an in-game video editor as good as Source Filmmaker. I mean, SFM can make Pixar-quality movies out of the Source Engine, whereas GTA machinimas are kinda poor in comparison.
